The interview was conducted on March 2nd, 2023 by Ioannis Solos and Charles Buck. william Morris has sustained practice since 1980. He has served on the California, Texas and Massachusetts Professional Associations, as well as the National Association. He has tendered 20 years of service to the field through academic medicine, earning a master’s degree in medical education to assist in developing Chinese medical doctoral programs and institutional review boards. He earned an OM.D. in 1988, a DAOM in 2002, and a Ph.D. focused on pulse diagnosis as clinical epistemology in 2009. He has published five books, including TCM Case Studies Dermatology, Li Shi-zhen Pulse Studies: An Illustrated Guide, Neoclassical Pulse Diagnosis, Cycles in Medical Astrology, and Transformation: Treating Trauma with Acupuncture and Herbs.

Resistance to pentavalent antimonial drugs and the lack of vaccines make it urgent to find novel therapeutic options to treat Leishmaniasis, a tropical disease caused by the Leishmania protozoan parasite. The study reported here is to investigate if Streptomycin, an aminoglycoside, and Amphotericin B, the second-line treatment drug, exhibit antileishmanial activity through a similar mechanism. By using MOE (Molecular Operating Environment), we performed molecular docking studies on these drugs binding to a range of targets including ribosome targets in Leishmania and H. sapiens. Our study shows that the two drugs do not bind to the same pockets in Leishmania targets but to the same pockets in the human ribosome, with some differences in interactions. Moreover, our 2D maps indicated that Amphotericin B binds to the A-site in the human cytoplasmic ribosome, whereas streptomycin does not.

Chicken is an important food animal worldwide and plays an important role in human life by providing meat and *** recent significant advances in gut microbiome studies,a comprehensive study of chicken gut bacterial,archaeal,and viral genomes remains *** this study,we constructed a chicken multi-kingdom microbiome catalog(CMKMC),including 18,201 bacterial,225 archaeal,and 33,411 viral genomes,and annotated over 6,076,006 protein-coding genes by integrating 135 chicken gut metagenomes and publicly available metagenome-assembled genomes(MAGs)from ten *** found that 812 and 240 MAGs in our dataset were putative novel species and genera,respectively,far beyond what was previously *** newly unclassified MAGs were predominant in Phyla Firmicutes_A(n=263),followed by Firmicutes(n=126),Bacteroidota(n=121),and Proteobacteria(n=87).Most of the classified species-level viral oper-ational taxonomic units belong to ***,63.24%of chicken gut viromes are predicted to infect two or more hosts,including complete circular ***,we found that diverse auxiliary metabolic genes and antibiotic resistance genes were carried by ***,our CMKMC provides the largest integrated MAGs and viral genomes from the chicken gut to date,functional insights into the chicken gastrointestinal tract microbiota,and paves the way for microbial interventions for better chicken health and productivity.

Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality and the incidence of this disease is expected to continue *** patients with pancreatic cancer have traditionally faced a dismal prognosis,over the past several years various advances in diagnosis and treatment have begun to positively impact this *** of effective combinations of existing chemotherapeutic agents,such as the FOLFIRINOX and the gemcitabine+nab-paclitaxel regimen,has improved survival for selected patients although concerns regarding their toxicity profiles remain.A better understanding of pancreatic carcinogenesis has identified several pre-malignant precursor lesions,such as pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias,intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms,and cystic *** technology has also evolved dramatically so as to allow early detection of these lesions and thereby facilitate earlier *** remains a cornerstone of treatment for patients with resectable pancreatic tumors,and advances in surgical technique have allowed patients to undergo resection with decreasing perioperative morbidity and *** has also become feasible in selected patients with borderline resectable tumors as a result of neoadjuvant ***,pancreatectomy involving vascular reconstruction and pancreatectomy with minimally invasive techniques have demonstrated safety without significantly compromising oncologic ***,a deeper understanding of molecular aberrations contributing to the development of pancreatic cancer shows promise for future development of more targeted and safe therapeutic agents.

Environmental drivers and genomic architecture of trait differentiation in fire-adapted Banksia attenuata ecotypes

Trait divergence between populations is considered an adaptive response to different environments,but to what extent this response is accompanied by genetic differentiation is less clear since it may be phenotypic plasticity. In this study, we analyzed phenotypic variation between two Banksia attenuata growth forms, lignotuberous(shrub) and epicormic resprouting(tree), in fire-prone environments to identify the environmental factors that have driven this phenotypic divergence. We linked genotype with phenotype and traced candidate genes using differential gene expression analysis. Fire intervals determined the phenotypic divergence between growth forms in B. attenuata. A genome-wide association study identified 69 single nucleotide polymorphisms, putatively associated with growth form, whereas no growth form-or phenotype-specific genotypes were eidentified. Genomic differentiation between the two growth forms was low(F_(st)=0.024). Differential gene expression analysis identified 37 genes/transcripts that were differentially expressed in the two growth forms. A small heat-shock protein gene, associated with lignotuber presence, was differentially expressed in the two *** conclude that different fire regimes induce phenotypic polymorphism in B. attenuata, whereas phenotypic trait divergence involves the differential expression of a small fraction of genes that interact strongly with the disturbance regime. Thus, phenotypic plasticity among resprouters is the general strategy for surviving varying fire regimes.

In the race to deliver clean water to communities through potable water reuse, disinfection and water quality assessment are and will continue to be fundamental factors. There are over 700 disinfection byproducts(DBPs) in water;evaluating each compound is practically impossible and very time consuming. A bioanalytical approach could be an answer to this challenge. In this work, the response of four major classes of DBPs toward mitochondrial membrane potential( Δψm) and cytoplasmic adenosine triphosphate(C-ATP) was investigated with human carcinoma(Hep G2) cells. Within 90 min of cell exposure, only the haloacetic acid(HAA) mixture caused a cytotoxic response as measured by C-ATP. All four groups(haloacetonitriles(HANs), trihalomethanes(THMs), nitrosamines(NOAs), and HAAs) responded well to Δψm, R 2 > 0.70. Based on the half-maximum concentration that evoked a 50% response in Δψm, the response gradient was HANs >> HAAs ~ THM > NOAs. The inhibition of the Δψm by HANs is driven by dibromoacetonitrile(DBAN), while dichloroacetonitrile(DCAN) did not cause a significant change in the Δψm at less than 2000 μM. A mixture of HANs exhibited an antagonistic behavior on the Δψm compared to individual compounds. If water samples are concentrated to increase HAN concentrations, especially DBAN, then Δψm could be used as a biomonitoring tool for DBP toxicity.

背景与目的:在全球范围内,脑卒中是成年人致死的第三大死因,也是最常见的致残原因。因此,脑卒中给患者家庭、社会及政府带来了沉重的经济负担,并在世界大多数国家、尤其是发达国家的卫生预算中占据了很大一部分。脑卒中最常见的类型是缺血性脑卒中,其中大脑中动脉(MCA)受累是最为严重的。阿尔伯塔脑卒中计划早期诊断项目评分(ASPECTS)是一个描述大脑中动脉(MCA)梗死区域梗死程度的一种具有可靠性、一致性和可重复性的半定量方法。缺血中心区面积为影像学最早测量到的脑实质不可逆缺血损伤的指标。本研究主要目的是使用回顾性地分析方法判断早期缺血性脑卒中ASPECTS法非对比增强CT征象(NCCT/NECT)和磁共振弥散加权成像(DWI)间的关系。非对比增强CT(或CT平扫)是急性脑卒中的首选检查方法,扫描方便,禁忌症少,同时较MRI检查更为廉价、快速。因此,非对比增强CT的ASPECTS评分法将有可能是判断脑卒中患者病变程度和预后的一种快速、可靠、全天候的工具。此外,DWI在大部分的三级医疗机构已经得到了广泛的应用。但是,在没有先进的影像设备和(或)后处理软件(如:灌注成像等)的地区,非对比增强CT的ASPECTS评分将有可能有助于脑卒中患者的治疗、护理方案的制定。方法:本次实验回顾性地研究了2015年大连医科大学附属第二医院内同时进行了非对比增强ct和磁共振弥散加权成像检查的缺血性脑卒中患者24例。实验对象为首次发病的mca供血区缺血性脑卒中(包括大脑半球卒中)患者,在发病的12小时内进行非对比ct评估(ncct)并在发病后1-5天内进行磁共振弥散加权成像(dwimri),随访过程中包括磁共振血管造影(mra)图像。患者的排除标准包括:出血性脑卒中、腔隙性梗死和持续性的血管狭窄或闭塞。24例患者进行非对比增强ct扫描和磁共振弥散加权成像检查,并分别对缺血中心区平均周长进行测量。以磁共振弥散加权成像中作为识别脑梗死区的影像学参考点与金标准。使用spss23.0统计学软件对患者年龄、非对比增强ct以及dwi的aspects评分、缺血中心平均周长、非对比增强ctaspects评分的敏感性、aspects评分≤7组与>7组之间梗死区周长、非对比增强ctaspects评分与dwi缺血灶周长的相关性进行统计学分析,p7组梗死中心周长间存在统计学差异;而在非对比增强CT ASPECTS评分与和DWI ASPECTS评分间不在统计学差异。在急性MCA梗死患者中非对比增强CT ASPECTS评分与DWI中缺血中心周长之间尚不能认为存在相关性,因此,非对比增强CT ASPECTS评分并不能替代缺血中心面积在判断梗死程度及预后中的作用。在以后的实验中,我们将采用更大的样本量,采用不同CT的扫描方位进行ASPECTS评分,在DWI对平均周长的测量中考虑扫描间距,并且进行前瞻性的设计。

Background In West Virginia (WV),47% of fifth-grade children are either overweight or *** is no clear consensus regarding the definition of insulin resistance in children,and directly measuring insulin on the population level is *** proposed measures examined further in this study include triglyceride (TRIG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and TRIG/low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) *** purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between TRIG/HDL-C ratio,TRIG/LDL-C ratio and insulin resistance in fifth-graders with acanthosis nigricans (AN).Methods Between 2007 and 2016,52,545 fifth-grade students in WV were assessed for *** glucose and insulin levels were collected only for a sub-group of students who were AN-positive and was used to determine insulin resistance using the Homeostatic Model for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) *** analysis included t tests and logistic regression with receiver operating characteristic *** Of the students assessed for AN,4.5% (n =2360) tested *** prevalence of insulin resistance was 79% (n =814) among 1030 with AN and complete ***/HDL-C ratio and TRIG/LDL-C ratio were significantly associated with insulin resistance (TRIG/HDL-C:Est.=0.36,P < 0.0001,AUC =0.68;TRIG/LDL-C:Est.=0.87,P < 0.0001,AUC =0.69).Multivariate analysis showed that increased body mass index (Est.=0.05,P < 0.0001),gender (Est.=0.49,p < 0.0001) and TRIG/HDL-C ratio (Est.=0.21,P < 0.0001) were significantly associated with insulin *** TRIG/HDL-C is a better surrogate marker of insulin resistance in AN-positive children compared to TRIG/ LDL-C ratio;so,on a population-level,cholesterol rather than insulin may be obtained for preliminary testing of early insulin resistance in children.
