Dendroclimatic analysis of white pine (Pinus strobus L.)using long-term provenance test sites across eastern North America

Background: The main objective of this study was to examine the climatic sensitivity of the radial growth response of 13 eastern white pine(Pinus strobus L.) provenances planted at seven test sites throughout the northern part of the species’ native distribution in eastern North ***: The test sites(i.e., Wabeno, Wisconsin, USA; Manistique, Michigan, USA; Pine River, Michigan, USA; Newaygo,Michigan, USA; Turkey Point, Ontario, canada; Ganaraska, Ontario, canada; and Orono, Maine, USA) examined in this study were part of a range-wide white pine provenance trial established in the early 1960 s in the eastern United States and canada. Principal components analysis(PcA) was used to examine the main modes of variation [first(Pc1) and second(Pc2) principal component axes] in the standardized radial growth indices of the provenances at each test *** year scores for Pc1 and Pc2 were examined in relation to an array of test site climate variables using multiple regression analysis to examine the commonality of growth response across all provenances to the climate of each test site. Provenance loadings on Pc1 and Pc2 were correlated with geographic parameters(i.e., latitude, longitude,elevation) and a suite of biophysical parameters associated with provenance origin ***: The amount of variation in radial growth explained by Pc1 and Pc2 ranged from 43.4% to 89.6%. Dendroclimatic models revealed that white pine radial growth responses to climate were complex and differed among sites. The key dendroclimatic relationships observed included sensitivity to high temperature in winter and summer, cold temperature in the spring and fal(i.e., beginning and end of the growing season), summer moisture stress, potential sensitivity to storminduced damage in spring and fal, and both positive and negative effects of higher winter snowfal. Fusion genes in solid tumors: an emerging target for cancer diagnosis and treatment

Studies over the past decades have uncovered fusion genes, a class of oncogenes that provide immense diagnostic and therapeutic advantages because of their tumor-specific expression. Originally associated with hemotologic cancers, fusion genes have recently been discovered in a wide array of solid tumors, including sarcomas, carcinomas, and tumors of the central nervous system. Fusion genes are attractive as both therapeutic targets and diagnostic tools due to their inherent expression in tumor tissue alone. Therefore, the discovery and elucidation of fusion genes in various cancer types may provide more effective therapies in the future for cancer patients.

First principles insights into oxide/polymer composites: SrTiO_(3) /polyaniline/graphene

A detailed computational investigation,based on density functional theory,of the interaction of polyani-line(PANI)and graphene nanoribbons(GNRs)with SrTiO_(3) is *** adsorption of PANI in var-ious oxidation states and co-adsorption with GNRs is found to be thermodynamically ***-sorbed PANI introduces N and c 2p states into the SrTiO_(3) bandgap,while co-adsorption of PANI and GNRs leads to a bridging of the gap and semi-metallic behaviour,thus rendering the electrical properties highly sensitive to the loading of the GNRs/PANI in the *** the lattice dynamics of the composites predicts a 68-88%reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity due to reduced phonon group *** together,these findings provide insight into the growing number of experimental studies highlighting the enhanced thermoelectric performance of oxide-polymer composites and indicate co-adsorption with graphene as a facile direction for future research.

Effects of environmental stressors on stem cells

Environmental toxicants are ubiquitous,and many are known to cause harmful health ***,much of what we know or think we know concerning the targets and long-term effects of exposure to environmental stressors is sadly *** exposure may have health effects that are currently mischaracterized or at least mechanistically incompletely *** much of the recent excitement about stem cells(Scs)focuses on their potential as therapeutic agents,they also offer a valuable resource to give us insight into the mechanisms and risks of toxicant *** only as a response to the increasing ethical pressure to reduce animal testing,Sc studies allow us valuable insight into the true effects of human exposure to environmental stressors under controlled *** present a review of the history of publications on the effects of environmental stressors on Scs,followed by a consolidation of the literature over the past five years on a subset of key environmental stressors of importance to human health and their effects on both embryonic and tissue *** review will make constructive suggestions as to areas of toxicant research where further studies are needed,as well as making indications of the potential utility for advancing knowledge and directing research on environmental toxicology.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning circulation(AMOc)is part of the great ocean“conveyor belt”that circulates heat around the *** the early 2000s,ocean sensors have started to monitor the AMOc,but the measurements are still far from accurate and the time window does not permit the separation of short term variability from a longer term *** works have claimed that global warming is slowing down the AMOc,based on models and proxies of *** other observations demonstrate a stable circulation of the *** using tide gauge data complementing recent satellite and ocean sensor observations,the stability of the AMOc is shown to go back to *** is concluded that no available information has the due accuracy and time coverage to show a clear trend outside the inter-annual and multi-decadal variability in the direction of increasing or decreasing strength over the last decades.

Atmospheric and kinetic studies of OH and HO_2 by the FAGE technique

A new FAGE setup has recently been built at the University of Lille,*** permits the quantification of OH and HO 2 in the atmosphere with a detection limit of 3×10 5 molecules/（cm 3 ·min） for OH and 1×10 6 molecules/（cm 3 ·min） for HO *** coupling to a photolysis cell enables the measurement of the total reactivity of the hydroxyl radical in ambient air and kinetic studies in *** configurations have been considered：one with the photolysis cell at 90° to the FAGE nozzle,the other on line with the FAGE *** two configurations have been tested and validated by measuring the well known rate constants of OH with cH 4,c 3 H 8 and *** advantages and drawbacks of each configuration have been *** ＂on line＂ configuration limits losses and permits measurements over a larger reactivity range but is affected by OH formation from the laser beam striking the FAGE nozzle,thus limiting the ability to carry out energy dependence studies which can,in contrast,be successfully performed in the 90° configuration.

Appendectomy and clostridium difficile colitis:Relationships revealed by clinical observations and immunology
