Computed tomography radiomic features and clinical factors predicting the response to first transarterial chemoembolization in intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma

Background:According to clinical practice guidelines,transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)is the standard treatment modality for patients with intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Early prediction of treatment response can help patients choose a reasonable treatment plan.This study aimed to investigate the value of the radiomic-clinical model in predicting the efficacy of the first TACE treatment for HCC to prolong patient survival.Methods:A total of 164 patients with HCC who underwent the first TACE from January 2017 to September 2021 were analyzed.The tumor response was assessed by modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors(mRECIST),and the response of the first TACE to each session and its correlation with overall survival were evaluated.The radiomic signatures associated with the treatment response were identified by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(LASSO),and four machine learning models were built with different types of regions of interest(ROIs)(tumor and corresponding tissues)and the model with the best performance was selected.The predictive performance was assessed with receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves and calibration curves.Results:Of all the models,the random forest(RF)model with peritumor(+10 mm)radiomic signatures had the best performance[area under ROC curve(AUC)=0.964 in the training cohort,AUC=0.949 in the validation cohort].The RF model was used to calculate the radiomic score(Rad-score),and the optimal cutoff value(0.34)was calculated according to the Youden’s index.Patients were then divided into a high-risk group(Rad-score>0.34)and a low-risk group(Rad-score≤0.34),and a nomogram model was successfully established to predict treatment response.The predicted treatment response also allowed for significant discrimination of Kaplan-Meier curves.Multivariate Cox regression identified six independent prognostic factors for overall survival,including male[hazard ratio(HR)=0.500,95%confidence interval(CI):0.260–0.962,P=0.038],alpha-fetoprotein(HR=

Monocular Distance Estimated Based on PTZ Camera

This paper introduces an intelligent computational approach for extracting salient objects fromimages and estimatingtheir distance information with PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras. PTZ cameras have found wide applications innumerous public places, serving various purposes such as public securitymanagement, natural disastermonitoring,and crisis alarms, particularly with the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence and global infrastructuralprojects. In this paper, we combine Gauss optical principles with the PTZ camera’s capabilities of horizontal andpitch rotation, as well as optical zoom, to estimate the distance of the object.We present a novel monocular objectdistance estimation model based on the Focal Length-Target Pixel Size (FLTPS) relationship, achieving an accuracyrate of over 95% for objects within a 5 km range. The salient object extraction is achieved through a simplifiedconvolution kernel and the utilization of the object’s RGB features, which offer significantly faster computingspeeds compared to Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Additionally, we introduce the dark channel beforethe fog removal algorithm, resulting in a 20 dB increase in image definition, which significantly benefits distanceestimation. Our system offers the advantages of stability and low device load, making it an asset for public securityaffairs and providing a reference point for future developments in surveillance hardware.

Association between serum estradiol level and appendicular lean mass index in middle-aged postmenopausal women

BACKGROUND Previous studies investigating the association between loss of estrogen at menopause and skeletal muscle mass came to contradictory conclusions.AIM To evaluate the association between serum estradiol level and appendicular lean mass index in middle-aged postmenopausal women using population-based data.METHODS This study included 673 postmenopausal women,aged 40-59 years,from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2013 and 2016.Weighted multivariable linear regression models were used to evaluate the association between serum E2 Level and appendicular lean mass index(ALMI).When non-linear associations were found by using weighted generalized additive model and smooth curve fitting,two-piecewise linear regression models were further applied to examine the threshold effects.RESULTS There was a positive association between serum E2 level and ALMI.Compared to individuals in quartile 1 group,those in other quartiles had higher ALMI levels.An inverted U-shaped curve relationship between serum E2 Level and ALMI was found on performing weighted generalized additive model and smooth curve fitting,and the inflection point was identified as a serum E2 level of 85 pg/mL.CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated an inverted U-shaped curve relationship between serum E2 levels and ALMI in middle-aged postmenopausal women,suggesting that low serum E2 levels play an important in the loss of muscle mass in middleaged postmenopausal women.

The Effect of Moisture in Different Altitude Layers on the Eastward Propagation of MJO

In this study, driven by ERA5 reanalysis data, the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF) version 4.0 was used to investigate the eastward propagation of the Madden–Julian oscillation(MJO) in the tropical atmosphere during December–February(DJF) of 2007/2008. The experiment with 11 cumulus parameterization schemes respectively shows that the Grell 3D scheme is one of several worse ones in describing MJO activities. In addition, still by use of the Grell 3D scheme, four nudging assimilation experiments for water vapor in all model vertical layers(Ndg＿all),lower layers(Ndg＿low), middle layers(Ndg＿mid), and upper layers(Ndg＿upp) were conducted. It is found that when the water vapor in the model approaches to the observed value, the model performance for MJO activities is improved greatly. Among the four nudging simulations, Ndg＿all certainly performs best. Although Ndg＿mid is important for the MJO-filtered profiles related to moisture, Ndg＿low and Ndg＿upp exhibit superiority to Ndg＿mid in simulating MJO eastward propagation. Ndg＿low has advantages when MJO features are represented by zonal wind at850 hPa and precipitation because the lower-level MJO-filtered moisture is conducive to the existence of lower-level condensational heating to the east of the MJO convective center. Ndg＿upp performs better when describing the MJO eastward propagation features by outgoing longwave radiation(OLR) since it can capture the moisture and cloud top temperature of deep convection associated with MJO, as well as front Walker cell. These results suggest that the lower-level moisture is more important in regulating the MJO eastward propagation, and the observed maximum MJO-filtered moisture in the middle troposphere might be a phenomenon accompanying the MJO deep convection,but not a factor controlling its eastward propagation.

Formation and transformation of metastable LPSO building blocks clusters in Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloys by spinodal decomposition and heterogeneous nucleation

To study the formation and transformation mechanism of long-period stacked ordered(LPSO)structures,a systematic atomic scale analysis was conducted for the structural evolution of long-period stacked ordered(LPSO)structures in the Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy annealed at 300℃~500℃.Various types of metastable LPSO building block clusters were found to exist in alloy structures at different temperatures,which precipitate during the solidification and homogenization process.The stability of Zn/Y clusters is explained by the first principles of density functional theory.The LPSO structure is distinguished by the arrangement of its different Zn/Y enriched LPSO structural units,which comprises local fcc stacking sequences upon a tightly packed plane.The presence of solute atoms causes local lattice distortion,thereby enabling the rearrangement of Mg atoms in the different configurations in the local lattice,and local HCP-FCC transitions occur between Mg and Zn atoms occupying the nearest neighbor positions.This finding indicates that LPSO structures can generate necessary Schockley partial dislocations on specific slip surfaces,providing direct evidence of the transition from 18R to 14H.Growth of the LPSO,devoid of any defects and non-coherent interfaces,was observed separately from other precipitated phases.As a result,the precipitation sequence of LPSO in the solidification stage was as follows:Zn/Ycluster+Mg layers→various metastable LPSO building block clusters→18R/24R LPSO;whereas the precipitation sequence of LPSO during homogenization treatment was observed to be as follows:18R LPSO→various metastable LPSO building block clusters→14H LPSO.Of these,14H LPSO was found to be the most thermodynamically stable structure.

Carbon efficiency modeling and optimization of solar-powered cellular networks

As wireless communication traffic experiences rapid growth, the carbon emissions caused by the communication industry are also on the rise. To achieve “carbon neutrality”, researchers are considering the use of renewable energy sources to power cellular networks, thereby reducing carbon emissions. However, a challenge arises when using renewable energy, specifically owing to the unpredictable nature of both the energy consumption of the cellular network and the power generation from renewable sources. This inconsistency results in low renewable energy utilization and reduced carbon efficiency. Herein, we construct a carbon efficiency model of solar-powered cellular networks using practical data from solar radiation. We propose a mechanism that alternately optimizes the performance of the renewable energy network and the cellular network. This approach is based on convex optimization theory and the Dinkelback algorithm, and it leads to the design of a carbon efficiency optimization algorithm. This algorithm aims to improve the carbon efficiency of cellular networks and reduce their carbon emissions. Simulation results demonstrate that our optimization scheme yields a maximum improvement of 2.56 × 108bps/g in the carbon efficiency of the cellular network as compared to conventional power allocation schemes such as the traditional water filling method and heuristic energy sharing and charge/discharge algorithms.

Multi-stream signals separation based on space-time-isomeric (SPATIO) array using metasurface antennas

In spatial domain signal processing, it is necessary to equip more antennas at the receiver to improve spatial demultiplexing capability. However, increasing the number of antennas under restricted space will reduce antenna spacing and raise the channel correlation, making the number of signal streams spatially demultiplexed much smaller than that of antennas. This paper proposes a method to design a space-timeisomeric(SPATIO) array based on metasurface antennas under wireless multipath conditions. Each antenna in this array has a different pattern and varies independently with time, reducing the channel correlation by superposing multipath at distinct positions and moments. Based on the SPATIO array, we present an array parameter design scheme based on infinity norm minimization, which can maximize the received energy of each stream while separating multi-stream received signals. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the SPATIO array for multi-stream signal reception. Compared with conventional multiple-input multipleoutput arrays, the proposed array can reduce the bit error rate by one order of magnitude under the same simulation conditions.

Reliable calculations of nuclear binding energies by the Gaussian process of machine learning

Reliable calculations of nuclear binding energies are crucial for advancing the research of nuclear physics.Machine learning provides an innovative approach to exploring complex physical problems.In this study,the nuclear binding energies are modeled directly using a machine-learning method called the Gaussian process.First,the binding energies for 2238 nuclei with Z>20 and N>20 are calculated using the Gaussian process in a physically motivated feature space,yielding an average deviation of 0.046 MeV and a standard deviation of 0.066 MeV.The results show the good learning ability of the Gaussian process in the studies of binding energies.Then,the predictive power of the Gaussian process is studied by calculating the binding energies for 108 nuclei newly included in AME2020.The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data,reflecting the good predictive power of the Gaussian process.Moreover,the-decay energies for 1169 nuclei with 50≤Z≤110 are derived from the theoretical binding energies calculated using the Gaussian process.The average deviation and the standard deviation are,respectively,0.047 MeV and 0.070 MeV.Noticeably,the calculated-decay energies for the two new isotopes 204 Ac(Huang et al.Phys Lett B 834,137484(2022))and 207 Th(Yang et al.Phys Rev C 105,L051302(2022))agree well with the latest experimental data.These results demonstrate that the Gaussian pro-cess is reliable for the calculations of nuclear binding energies.Finally,the-decay properties of some unknown actinide nuclei are predicted using the Gaussian process.The predicted results can be useful guides for future research on binding energies and-decay properties.

Effectivity and safety of trifocal intraocular lenses and capsular tension rings implantation for cataract patients with axial high myopia

●AIM:To assess effectivity and safety of trifocal intraocular lenses(IOLs)and capsular tension rings in treating cataract patients with axial high myopia.●METHODS:A prospective nonrandomized controlled clinical trial was conducted.Totally 98 eyes(74 patients)who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery(FLACS)with trifocal IOLs were enrolled in the study and followed up for 2y after surgery:46 eyes(33 patients)with capsular tension ring implantation in the long axial lengths(AL)group(260.05).The dysfunctional lens index and total modulation transfer function(MTF)average height were similar between the two groups.The postoperative internal coma aberrations in the axial high myopia eyes were significantly higher than that in the normal AL group(P<0.05).The total satisfaction score in the long AL group(91.32±2.76)was slightly higher than that in the normal AL group(90.36±3.47),but there was no difference(P=0.136).A statistically negative correlation was found between corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA)and dysfunctional lens index(r=-0.382,P=0.009),and between CDVA and the total MTF average height(r=-0.374,P=0.01).But there was no significant correlation between CDVA and total satisfaction score(r=0.059,P=0.696).Postoperative complications mainly presented as posterior capsular opacity(PCO),retinal detachment and cystoid macular edema.There was no difference in the incidence of fundus disease(6.5%vs 3.8%,P=0.663)or PCO(1

Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B2:A promising biomarker for colorectal cancer

According to the latest global cancer statistics,colorectal cancer(CRC)has emerged as the third most prevalent malignant tumor across the globe.In recent decades,the medical field has implemented several levels of CRC screening tests,encompassing fecal tests,endoscopic examinations,radiological examinations and blood tests.Previous studies have shown that leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B2(LILRB2)is involved in inhibiting immune cell function,immune evasion,and promoting tumor progression in acute myeloid leukemia and nonsmall cell lung cancer.However,its interaction with CRC has not been reported yet.Recently,a study published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology revealed that LILRB2 and its ligand,angiopoietin-like protein 2,are markedly overexpressed in CRC.This overexpression is closely linked to tumor progression and is indicative of a poor prognosis.The study highlights the potential of utilizing the concentration of LILRB2 in serum as a promising biomarker for tumors.However,there is still room for discussion regarding the data processing and analysis in this research.
