In 2014,The GEOSS Water Strategy–From Observations to Decisions was published and steps were taken to implement the Strategy’s *** Strategy highlighted priority areas where the application of Earth observations to water research and water management decisions would have significant scientific and societal *** article reviews the implementation of the Strategy’s recommendations over the past eight *** a review of the Strategy’s assessment of the needs for water observations and their applications,it then reviews actions taken in response to the Strategy’s recommendations in its four maj.r themes:improved data acquisition for Essential Water Variables,research and product development,interoperability,and capacity *** highlights significant achievements in the implementation of the Strategy including some motivated by factors beyond this Strategy,reviews actions taken by participating agencies and programs for each of the main themes and summarizes the remaining challenges in achieving the Strategy’s full *** article not only is an update for the Water Community regarding the GEOSS Water Strategy,but it is also an example of how other communities could develop and promulgate a set of strategic recommendations,monitor progress,and carry out assessments of their effectiveness.

This paper is concerned with Bernstein polynomials on k-simploids by which we mean a crossproduct of k lower dimensional simplices. Specifically, we show that if the Bernstein polynomials ofa given function f on a k-simploid form a decreasing sequence then f+l, where l is any correspondingtensor product of affine functions. achieves its maximum on the boundary of the k-simploid. Thisextends recent results in [1] for bivariate Bernstein polynomials on triangles. Unlike the approachused in [1] our approach is based on semigroup techniques and the maximum principle for secondorder elliptic operators. Furthermore, we derive analogous results for cube spline surfaces.

The phytohormone auxin triggers root growth inhibition within seconds via a *** members of the TIR1/AFB auxin receptor family,AFB1 has a primary role in this rapidresponse. However, the unique features that confer this specific function have not been *** we show that the N-terminal region of AFB1, including the F-box domain and residues thatcontribute to auxin binding,is essential and sufficient for its specific role in the rapid response. Substitutionof the N-terminal region of AFB1 with that of TIR1 disrupts its distinct cytoplasm-enriched localizationand activity in rapid root growth inhibition by auxin. Importantly, the N-terminal region of AFB1 isindispensable for auxin-triggered calcium influx, which is a prerequisite for rapid root growth ***, AFB1 negatively regulates lateral root formation and transcription of auxin-induced genes,suggesting that it plays an inhibitory role in canonical auxin signaling. These results suggest that AFB1may buffer the transcriptional auxin response, whereas it regulates rapid changes in cell growth thatcontributeto rootgravitropism.

Two maj.r fields of study in optics—holography and interferometry—have developed at times independently and at other times *** two methods share the principle of holistically recording as an intensity pattern the magnitude and phase distribution of a light wave,but they can differ significantly in how these recordings are formed and *** we review seven specific developments,ranging from data acquisition to fundamental imaging theory in three dimensions,that illustrate the synergistic developments of holography and interferometry.A clear trend emerges,of increasing reliance of these two fields on a common traj.ctory of enhancements and improvements.

Rotational stability of plate haptic toric intraocular lenses after combined 25-gauge vitrectomy and cataract surgery

AIM:To evaluate the postoperative intraocular lens(IOL)rotational stability and residual refractive astigmatism following combined 25-gauge vitrectomy and cataract surgery with implantation of a plate haptic toric ***:In this retrospective case series,32 eyes of 32 patients underwent a combined 25-gauge vitrectomy and phacoemulsification for vitreoretinal diseases and cataract with regular corneal astigmatism of at least 1 diopter(D).A plate haptic toric IOL(AT Torbi 709M,Carl Zeiss Meditec AG)was implanted in all *** outcome measures were rotational stability and refractive astigmatism up to 6mo postoperatively as well as the best corrected visual acuity(BCVA).RESULTS:Preoperative refractive astigmatism was 2.14±1.17 D,which was significantly reduced to 0.77±0.37 D six to eight weeks postoperatively and remained stable throughout the observation period(0.67±0.44 D at three months and 0.75±0.25 D at six months;for all groups:P<0.0001 compared to baseline).BCVA improved significantly from 0.36±0.33 logMAR preoperatively to 0.10±0.15 logMAR following surgery(P=0.02).Mean IOL axis deviation from the target axis was 3.4°±2.9°after six to eight weeks and significantly decreased over time(2.4°±2.6°six months after surgery;P=0.04).In one patient IOL,re-alignment was ***:Corneal astigmatism is significantly reduced following combined 25-gauge vitrectomy and cataract *** plate haptic toric IOL position and axis remain stable during the observation period of six months.

AIM:To evaluate the glycated hemoglobin(HbA_(1c)) determination methods and to determine fructosamine in patients with chronic hepatitis,compensated cirrhosis and in patients with chronic hepatitis treated with ribavirin. METHODS:HbA_(1c) values were determined in 15 patients with compensated liver cirrhosis and in 20 patients with chronic hepatitis using the ion-exchange high performance liquid chromatography and the immunoassay methods. Fructosamine was determined using nitroblue tetrazolium. RESULTS:Forty percent of patients with liver cirrhosis had HbA_(1c) results below the non-diabetic reference range by at least one HbA_(1c)method,while fructosamine results were either within the reference range or *** percent of patients with chronic hepatitis(hepatic fibrosis) had HbA_(1c)results below the non-diabetic reference range by at least one HbA_(1c)*** patients with chronic hepatitis treated with ribavirin,50% of HbA_(1c)results were below the non-diabetic reference using at least one of the HbA_(1c)methods. CONCLUSION:Only evaluated in context with all liver function parameters as well as a red blood count including reticulocytes,HbA_(1c)results should be used in patients with advanced liver ***_(1c)and fructosamine measurements should be used with caution when evaluating long-term glucose control in patients with hepatic cirrhosis or in patients with chronic hepatitis and dbavidn treatment.

This study was conducted to verify the results of a preceding retrospective pilot study by means of a prospective controlled investigation including a larger sample size. Therefore, the aim of this clinical investigation was to analyze the relationship between sleep bruxism and several functional and occlusal parameters. The null hypothesis of this study was that there would be no differences among sleep bruxism subj.cts and non-sleep bruxism controls regarding several functional and occlusal parameters. Fifty-eight sleep bruxism subj.cts and 31 controls participated in this study. The diagnosis sleep bruxism was based on clinical criteria of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Sixteen functional and occlusal parameters were recorded clinically or from dental study casts. Similar to the recently published retrospective pilot study, with a mean slide of 0.77 mm （s.d., 0.69 mm） in the sleep bruxism group and a mean slide of 0.4 mm （s.d., 0.57 mm） in the control group, the evaluation of the mean comparison between the two groups demonstrated a larger slide from centric occlusion to maximum intercuspation in sleep bruxism subj.cts （Mann-Whitney U-test; P=O.O08）. However, following Bonferroni adj.stment, none of the 16 occlusal and functional variables differed significantly between the sleep bruxism subj.cts and the non-sleep bruxism controls. The present study shows that the occlusal and functional parameters evaluated do not differ between sleep bruxism subj.cts and non-sleep bruxism subj.cts. However, as the literature reveals a possible association between bruxism and certain subgroups of temporomandibular disorders, it appears advisable to incorporate the individual adaptive caoacitv of the stomatognathic svstem into future investigations.
