Ecological studies suggested a link between air pollution and severe COVID-19 outcomes,while studies accounting for individual-level characteristics are *** the present study,we aimed to investigate the impact of short-term ambient air pollution exposure on disease severity among a cohort of 569 laboratory confirmed COVID-19 patients admitted to designated hospitals in zhejiang province,china,from January 17 to March 3,2020,and elucidate the possible biological processes involved using *** with mild cases,severe cases had higher proportion of medical conditions as well as unfavorable results in most of the laboratory tests,and manifested higher air pollution exposure *** exposure to air pollutants was associated with increased risk of severe COVID-19 with odds ratio(OR)of 1.89(95%confidence interval(CI):1.01,3.53),2.35(95%CI:1.20,4.61),2.87(95%CI:1.68,4.91),and 2.01(95%CI:1.10,3.69)for PM_(2.5),PM_(10),NO_(2)and CO,*** for NO_(2)remained significant in two-pollutant models after adjusting for other *** analysis showed 884 differentially expressed genes which mainly were enriched in virus clearance related biological processes between patients with high and low NO_(2)exposure levels,indicating that compromised immune response might be a potential underlying mechanistic *** findings highlight the impact of shortterm air pollution exposure,particularly for NO_(2),on COVID-19 severity,and emphasize the significance in mitigating the COVID-19 burden of commitments to improve air quality.

Phytoremediation is a new method for removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the environment.A study was conducted to investigate accumulation of pyrene and protein changes in maize of Zea mays L responding to the stress of 1week exposure to pyrene in the growth media.A group of three 5-week maize plants was allowed to grow in a nutrient solution of different pyrene concentration（0,0.1,1,and 10 mg/L） for 1 week,the roots were then taken for proteomic *** proteins in the roots were extracted and separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis;28 protein spots were different from those of the control *** comparisons of isoelectric point,molecular weight and abundance showed 14 up-regulated protein spots,four newly induced protein spots,6 down-regulated protein spots,and lost four *** ten proteins of different molecular weight were subjected to trypsin digestion and then peptide separation by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry;only six of them matched the database at molecular weights of 12.69,21.89,22.30,43.14,57.22 and 102.61 *** six matched proteins were centromere protein-like protein,putative heat shock protein,putative GTP-binding protein,6-phosphofructo-2-kinase,cytochrome P450,and fructose-2,*** study results have demonstrated the benefits of the proteomic approach in phytoremediation of PAHs and also provided new insights into pyrene degradation related proteins in maize roots.

Sorption characteristics and mechanisms of organic contaminant to carbonaceous biosorbents in aqueous solution

A series of carbonaceous biosorbents was prepared by pyrolyzing pine needles, a model biomass, at various temperatures (100–700°C) under an oxygen-limited condition for 6 h. The elemental compositions and the specific surface areas (BET-N2) of the biosorbents were analyzed. Sorption properties of 4-nitrotoluene to the biosorbents and their mechanisms were investigated, and then correlated with the structures of the biosorbents. The result shows that with the increase of the pyrolytic temperature, the aromaticity of the carbonaceous biosorbents increases dramatically and the polarity (the (N+O)/C atomic ratio) decreases sharply. Correspondingly, conformations of the organic matter in the biosorbents transform gradually from a “soft-state” to a “hard-state” and the specific surface areas of the resultant biosorbents extend rapidly. The sorption isotherms fit well with the Freundlich equation. The regression parameters (i.e., N and IgK f) are linearly related to the aromaticity indices (the H/C atomic ratio). Contributions of adsorption and partition to total sorption of the carbonaceous biosorbents are quantified. The adsorption of the carbonaceous biosorbents increases quickly with the increase of the pyrolytic temperature. The saturated adsorption amounts (Q max) increase linearly with the increase of the specific surface areas (SA) of the biosorbents. For the carbonaceous biosorbents with hard-state carbon, the calculated normalized-Q max values by SA are comparable to the theoretical estimation (2.45 μmol/m2). In comparison, for the carbonaceous sorbents with soft-state carbon, the calculated normalized-Q max values by SA are much higher than the theoretical estimation. The partition coefficients (K om) increase with the decrease of the polarity of the biosorbents, reaching a maximum, and then decrease sharply with further decreasing the polarity, suggesting that partition mechanism be dominated by the compatibility and accessibility of the sorbent medium with org

This paper reviews the extent and severity of arsenic （As） pollution and human health in china, based on the literature published in Chinese. In the 1950s, symptoms of As poisoning such as black-foot disease in Taiwan caused by high concentrations of As in groundwater were reported throughout the world. From the late 1970s to early 1980s, endemic arsenicosis due to high-As groundwater was found in Xinjiang. In the 1990s, endemic arsenicosis was found in provinces of Inner Mongolia （groundwater）, Shanxi （groundwater） and Guizhou （coal combustion）. Arsenic contamination and its toxicity to soils, plants, animals and humans were recorded in the Chinese literature.

Jellyfish-inspired alginate composite hydrogel filter prepared by macro-micro double bionic strategy for efficient water purification

Recently,research on hydrogel materials with a porous structure and superior water absorption capabilities significantly ***,the hydrogel under gravity-driven separation conditions often exhibit an unstable pore structure,poor mechanical properties,and limited *** this end,this work presents a novel approach that combines a macro-micro double bionic strategy with a triple crosslinking method to develop a multifunctional alginate composite hydrogel filter(2%-SA-κCG-PVA-Ca^(2+),2%-SKP-Ca^(2+)for short)with a stable pore structure and superior mechanical properties,which possessed an umbrella-shaped structure resembling that of *** 2%-SKPCa^(2+)filter was synthesized using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)as a stable structure-directing agent,and sodium alginate(SA)andκ-carrageenan(κ-CG)as polymer *** distinctive umbrellashaped hydrogel of 2%-SKP-Ca^(2+)filter,formed through the triple crosslinking method,overcomes the limitations of unstable pore structure and poor durability seen in hydrogels prepared by traditional crosslinking ***,the utilization of the 2%-SKP-Ca^(2+)filter in water treatment demonstrates its good selective permeability,excellent resistance to fouling,and extended longevity,which enables it to simultaneously achieve the multifunctional water purification and the coating of multi-substrate anti-fouling ***,not only does this research provide an efficient,multifunctional,highly pollution-resistant preparation method for designing a new filter,but it also confirms the application prospect of the macro-micro dual bionic strategy developed in this study in complex water treatment.

Various land use and land cover(LULC)products have been produced over the past decade with the development of remote sensing *** the differences in LULC classification schemes,there is a lack of research on assessing the accuracy of their application to croplands in a unified ***,this study evaluated the spatial and area accuracies of cropland classification for four commonly used global LULC products(i.e.,MCD12Q1V6,GlobCover2009,FROM-GLC and GlobeLand30)based on the harmonised FAO criterion,and quantified the relationships between four factors(i.e.,slope,elevation,field size and crop system)and cropland classification *** validation results indicated that MCD12Q1 and GlobeLand30 performed well in cropland classification regarding spatial consistency,with overall accuracies of 94.90 and 93.52%,*** FROMGLC showed the worst performance,with an overall accuracy of 83.17%.Overlaying the cropland generated by the four global LULC products,we found the proportions of complete agreement and disagreement were 15.51 and 44.72% for the cropland classification,*** consistency was mainly observed in the Northeast china Plain,the huang-Huai-Hai Plain and the northern part of the Middle-lower Yangtze Plain,*** contrast,low consistency was detected primarily on the eastern edge of the northern and semiarid region,the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and southern *** size was the most important factor for mapping *** area accuracy,compared with china Statistical Yearbook data at the provincial scale,the accuracies of different products in descending order were:GlobeLand30,FROM-GLC,MCD12Q1,and *** cropland classification schemes mainly caused large area deviations among the four products,and they also resulted in the different ranks of spatial accuracy and area accuracy among the four *** results can provide valuable suggestions for selecting cropland products at the national or provinc

Cytochrome P450(CYP) enzymes play a critical role in the metabolic activation of environmental carcinogens. NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase(POR),a flavoprotein transferring electrons from NADPH to CYP enzymes, is required for the catalytic function of all microsomal CYP ***,naturally occruing POR missense variants have been discovered in human ***,their functional significance in CYP-mediated carcinogen activation is not *** aim of this study was to determine the effect of POR genetic variation on cytotoxicity induced by aflatoxin B1(AFB1),a mycotoxin and a potent carcinogen in human and *** previous work demonstrated that human CYP2A13 is highly efficient in the metabolic activation of AFB1(He et al.,2006).In this study,we established Flp-In CHO cells co-expressing human CYP2A13 and human wild-type or variant POR *** there was no significant difference in AFB1-induced cytotoxicity between the cells co-expressing wild-type human POR and the POR variants M263V and A503V,the cytotoxicity was decreased in the cells co-expressing the POR variants A287P,Y459H and *** results demonstrate that POR genetic variation can affect CYP2A13-catalyzed AFB1 activation and suggest that individuals carrying the functional variant POR alleles may have different susceptibility to AFB1 exprosure.
