A sonochemical method for the direct controlled synthesis of Cd-Bi nanoparticles from a bulk Cd-Bi alloy is introduced. The nanoparticles were found to be monodispersed and the size distribution can be easily controlled by adjusting the ultrasonic power. The formation and the constituent of the as-prepared Cd-Bi nanoparticles were revealed by means of X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry, transmission electron microscopy, and electron diffraction. It was found that the Cd-Bi eutectic alloy nanoparticles are made of the hexagonal phase of metal cadmium and the rhombohedral phase of metal bismuth. In addition, we also found through tribological tests that the powder has an excellent antiwear property.

AIM: To study the virological and host factors influencing hepatitis C infection outcomes in heroin users in southern China. METHODS: HCV RNA and associated factors were analyzed among 347 heroin users from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China who were hepatitis C virus (HCV) EIA positive for two or more consecutive visits. RESULTS: Using the COBAS AMPLICOR HCV TEST, a remarkably low HCV RNA negative rate of 8.6% was detected. After multivariate logistic regression analysis, HCV RNA clearance was significantly associated with the presence of HBsAg (OR = 8.436, P < 0.0001), the lack of HIV-1 infection (OR = 0.256, P = 0.038) and age younger than 25 (OR = 0.400, P = 0.029). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests HCV infection among Chinese heroin users results in high levels of viral persistence even amidst factors previously found to enhance viral clearance. Prospective studies of a possible genetic component within the Chinese population and the pathogenicity of non-genotype 1 HCV infections are needed.

Sea ice conditions in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago(CAA)play a key role in the navigation of the Northwest Passage(NWP).Limited by observed sea ice thickness data,the research of temporal and spatial variation of sea ice in the NWP is *** on the observed sea ice concentration and simulated thickness data,the temporal and spatial characteristics of sea ice concentration,extent and thickness from 1979 to 2017 in the NWP of the CAA were *** more specific pathways of the northern and southern routes of the NWP were *** the background of the rapid retreat of Arctic sea ice,the 39-year observed sea ice concentration and extent of the NWP exhibited a relatively large decreasing trend in summer and fall,while heavy sea ice conditions were maintained in winter and spring,with slightly increasing trend in some *** sea ice thickness in most subregions of the NWP showed a decreasing trend,with exception of Lancaster *** sea ice thickness was larger along the northern route than the southern *** significant correlation(p<0.05)between sea ice and surface air temperature(SAT)and sea surface temperature(SST)in the NWP suggested that the surface thermodynamic factors had a greater impact on sea ice in the summer and fall,and the variations of sea ice concentration were more closely correlated with the surface thermodynamic factors than sea ice *** SST had a higher correlation with sea ice concentration than SAT,while SAT exhibited a higher correlation with sea ice thickness than *** remaining sea ice concentration and thickness in the fall,associated with the summer and fall SAT and SST,contributed to the formation of sea ice in the following winter and *** heat content and mixed layer depth were also be considered as the vertical thermodynamic factors to the sea ice condition in the NWP.

Combined en bloc liver/pancreas transplantation （CLPT） was used primarily in the treal^nent of otherwise non- resectable upper abdominal malignancy. In fact, a more appropriate indication is in patients with liver disease and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus （IDDM）. Here, we report on two successful cases of CLPT at our hospital. One was a patient with non-resectable advanced liver cancer. The recipient survived for 23 mo and finally died of recurrent tumor. The other was a patient with severe biliary complication after orthotopic liver transplantation and preoperative IDDM. We performed CLPT with a modified surgical technique of preserving the native pancreas. He is currently liver-disease- and insulin-free more than 27 mo post-transplant. Based on our experience in two cases of abdominal cluster transplantation, we describe the technical details of CLPT and a modification of the surgical procedure.

AIM:To investigate the clinical characteristics,diagnosis,treatment,and prognosis of primary adenosquamous carcinoma(ASC)of the ***:A total of 4015 patients with esophageal carcinoma underwent surgical resection between January 1995 and June 2012 at the Cancer Hospital of Shantou University Medical *** 37 cases,the histological diagnosis was primary *** data were retrospectively analyzed from these 37 patients,who underwent transthoracic esophagectomy with ***χ2or Fisher’s exact test was used to compare the clinicopathological features between patients with ASC and those with squamous cell carcinoma(SCC).The Kaplan-Meier and Log-Rank methods were used to estimate and compare survival rates.A Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to identify independent prognostic ***:Primary esophageal ASC accounted for0.92%of all primary esophageal carcinoma cases(37/4015).The clinical manifestations were identical to those of other types of esophageal *** of the 24patients who underwent preoperative endoscopic biopsy were misdiagnosed with *** median survival time(MST)was 21.0 mo(95%CI:12.6-29.4),and the1-,3-,and 5-year overall survival rates were 67.5%,29.4%,and 22.9%,*** multivariate analysis,only adjuvant radiotherapy(HR=0.317,95%CI:0.114-0.885,P=0.028)was found to be an independent prognostic *** MST for ASC patients was significantly lower than that for SCC patients[21.0 mo(95%CI:12.6-29.4)vs 46.0 mo(95%CI:40.8-51.2),P=0.001].In subgroup analyses,the MST for ASC patients was similar to that for poorly differentiated SCC ***:Primary esophageal ASC is a rare disease that is prone to be misdiagnosed by endoscopic *** prognosis is poorer than esophageal SCC but similar to that for poorly differentiated SCC patients.

Creatine kinase is a muscle enzyme that has been reported at various levels in different studies involving patients with amyotrophic lateral *** the present retrospective case-control study,we included 582 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and 582 age-and sexmatched healthy *** amyotrophic lateral sclerosis participants received treatment in the Department of Neurology,West China Hospital,China,between May 2008 and December *** creatine kinase levels in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis were significantly higher than those in healthy *** analysis revealed that serum creatine kinase levels in men were higher than those in women in both amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients and healthy *** with patients with bulbar-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,patients with limb-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis had higher creatine kinase ***'s correlation analysis revealed that serum creatine kinase levels were not correlated with body mass index,Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating ScaleRevised score,or progression *** adjusting for prognostic covariates,higher log creatine kinase values were correlated with higher overall survival in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis *** also investigated the longitudinal changes in serum creatine kinase levels in 81 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients;serum creatine kinase levels were decreased at the second blood test,which was sampled at least 6 months after the first blood ***,our results suggest that serum creatine kinase levels can be used as an independent factor for predicting the prognosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis *** study received ethical approval from the Ethics Committee of West China Hospital,China(approval No.2015(236))on December 23,2015.

The throughflow in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago(CAA)had a significant impact on the North Atlantic Ocean with the Arctic climate *** findings of physical mechanisms driving the throughflow in the CAA differed and few studies about the impact of sea level pressure(SLP)on the CAA throughflow were made.A high-resolution ice-ocean coupled Arctic Ocean Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model(AO-FVCOM)was used over the period 1978-2016 to examine the interannual and seasonal variability of the outflows in the CAA and the mechanism of SLP in driving the variation of the CAA throughflow *** simulated volume transport through Davis Strait,Nares Strait,Lancaster Sound and Jones Sound showed consistent increasing trends over 1978-2016 and the larger flux in winter and spring than in summer and *** variation of volume transport through Nares Strait contributed more than Lancaster and Jones Sound to the variation through Davis *** process-oriented experiments were made to further explore the role of SLP in setting up and controlling the sea surface height(SSH)difference and thus the throughflow transport in the *** SLP was a primary forcing to control the SSH difference and the outflow transport compared with the wind *** memory of the SSH to the SLP was short and an equilibrium state could be reached if the SLP varied with *** upstream and downstream SLP difference,however,made a slight direct contribution to driving the volume transport of the CAA *** addition to the external forcing of SLP and wind,the variability of the CAA outflow was also influenced by the variability of the inflow/outflow and SSH on boundaries connected to the Pacific and Atlantic *** choice of SLP datasets from CORE-v2,ECMWF and NCEP was sensitive to the simulated uncertainty of volume transport.
