Molecular phylogeny of Entomobrya (Collembola: Entomobryidae) from China: Color pattern groups and multiple origins

Highly diversified colorations among springtails (Collembola) have been widely used for species diagnosis, but their phylogenetic significance is poorly known. We addressed this issue in the largest Entomobryinae genus Entomobrya, which possesses variable color patterns among species. The relationships within the genus and to other genera have also rarely been studied. Based on material mainly from China, we have conducted a multilocus phylogeny and topology tests with likelihood and Bayesian algorithms, and accordingly demonstrated the non-monophyly of Chinese Entomobrya. The division of five clades, including Entomobrya and several related genera, coincided well with five types of colorations, respectively. Further analyses of divergence time and historical biogeography revealed that Chinese Entomobrya originated mainly from Palearctic (northern and western) China in the Paleocene and Eocene. This study highlights the great phylo? genetic values as well as taxonomic uses of coloration in Chinese Entomobrya. Multiple phylogenetic and biogeographic origins of Entomobrya imply its complicated relationships with both scaled and unsealed genera of Entomobryinae.

Microbial communities,derived from food,ambient,and inner,can affect host ecological adaption and evolution.Comparing with most phytophagous arthropods,predators may have more opportunities to develop specific microbiota depending on the level of prey specialization.To explore how diet sources affect host microbial communities and vary across predator species,we considered 3 types of predators from Phytoseiidae(Acari:Mesostigmata):polyphagous(Amblyseius orientalis Ehara,Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes,and Amblyseius swirski Athias-Henrio),oligophagous(Neoseiulus californicus McGregor),and monophagous(Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot)predatory mites.The polyphagous species were fed on 2 types of diets,natural prey and alternative prey.By using 16S rRNA sequencing,we found that diet was the main source of microbiota in predatory mites,while there was no clear pattern affected by prey specialization.Among 3 polyphagous predators,host species had a larger impact than prey on microbial composition.Unlike A.orientalis or N.barkeri which showed consistency in their microbiota,prey switching significantly affectedβ-diversity of bacterial composition in A.swirskii,with 56%of the microbial alteration.In short,our results confirmed the substantial influence of diet on host microbial construction in predatory species,and highlighted species differences in shaping the microbiota which are not necessarily related to prey specialization.

To compensate for their sessile nature,plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms enabling them to adapt to ever-changing environments.One such prominent feature is the evolution of diverse life history strategies,particularly such that annuals reproduce once followed by seasonal death,while perennials live longer by cycling growth seasonally.This intrinsic phenology is primarily genetic and can be altered by environmental factors.Although evolutionary transitions between annual and perennial life history strategies are common,perennials account for most species in nature because they survive well under year-round stresses.This proportion,however,is reversed in agriculture.Hence,perennial crops promise to likewise protect and enhance the resilience of agricultural ecosystems in response to climate change.Despite significant endeavors that have been made to generate perennial crops,progress is slow because of barriers in studying perennials,and many developed species await further improvement.Recent findings in model species have illustrated that simply rewiring existing genetic networks can lead to lifestyle variation.This implies that engineering plant life history strategy can be achieved by manipulating only a few key genes.In this review,we summarize our current understanding of genetic basis of perenniality and discuss major questions and challenges that remain to be addressed.

A novel γ-γ'（Ni solid solution—Ni3Al） NiPtAl coating was produced on advanced single-crystal（SC）superalloy N5 by electroplating of a thin Pt coating with～3 μm in thickness followed by heat treatment at 1000 ℃ in vacuum.For comparison,a traditional γ-γ'NiPtAl coating was also produced by electroplating of a thick Pt coating with ～ 6 μm in thickness followed by heat treatment at 1100 ℃ in vacuum.The novel coating has a mass gain of～ 0.5 mg·cm-2after 100 h 1-h cyclic oxidation at 1150℃,showing better oxidation resistance than the traditional coating.An oxide scale mostly consisting of α-Al2O3grew on the novel coating because the element Cr from the SC alloy substrate contributes to the formation of α-Al2O3.Pt content in the novel coating has significant effect on the oxidation resistance.The optimized Pt content in the coating is about 16 at%,which is helpful to reduce the diffusion of harmful elements from the substrate into the coating but also to reduce the cost of the coating.

Thermal barrier coatings（TBCs） applied in aeroengines tend to be attacked by molten calcia-magnesiaalumino-silicate（CMAS） at high operating temperatures.Yttria-stabilized zirconia（YSZ） coatings with quasicolumnar microstructure were fabricated by plasma spray physical vapor deposition（PS-PVD） technique.The chemic al changes,micros tructural transform ation,mechanical properties and degradation mechanisms of the CM AS-interacted TBCs in the thermal cycling tests were investigated.Feathered YSZ grains were dissolved in the CMAS melts,and then the ZrO2grains were reprecipitated with spherical shape,accompanying with phase transformation from tetragonal（t） to monoclinic（m）.The thermal cycling tests reveal that the YSZ coating fails at the early stage due to the attack of CMAS.The fractures in intracolumns lead to partial spallation of the coatings.The failure of the coating occurs at the interfaces between thermally grown oxides（TGO） layer and YSZ topcoat;especially,the hardness and Young's modulus of the YSZ coatings increase intensively,as the coatings were infiltrated by the CMAS for a long time.

Lignocellulose has the potential to become a bio-based adsorbent due to its biodegradability and renewability.In this study,a novel polydopamine functionalized-lignin(lignin@PDA),prepared via self-polymerization of dopamine(PDA)on lignin,was used as a bio-based adsorbent for rapid scavenging of hexavalent chromium(Cr(VI)).The morphology,functional groups,crystalline structure,and chemical composition of lignin@PDA were characterized with a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.The Cr(VI)adsorption process of lignin@PDA was studied using batch experiments as a function of pH,ionic strength,adsorbent dose,and contact time at room temperature.The adsorption rate of lignin@PDA was five times greater than that of the unmodified lignin,with a maximum adsorption capacity of 102.6 mg/g in an acidic medium.The adsorption of Cr(VI)on lignin@PDA fit the pseudo-secondorder equation and the Freundlich model,indicating that the adsorption process was mainly dominated by chemisorption and surface complexation.The thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of Cr(VI)on lignin@PDA was an endothermic and spontaneous process.The X-ray absorption fine structure results showed that sorption and reduction of Cr(VI)into Cr(II)occurred simultaneously on lignin.Moreover,PDA coating not only improved the reactivity of lignin but also promoted the complete reduction of Cr(VI)by lignin.According to these results,polydopamine functionalized-lignin is a promising bio-based adsorbent for immobilization of Cr(VI)from wastewater.

In this paper,numerical experiments are carried out to investigate the impact of penalty parameters in the numerical traces on the resonance errors of high-order multiscale discontinuous Galerkin(DG)methods(Dong et al.in J Sci Comput 66:321–345,2016;Dong and Wang in J Comput Appl Math 380:1–11,2020)for a one-dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation.Previous work showed that penalty parameters were required to be positive in error analysis,but the methods with zero penalty parameters worked fine in numerical simulations on coarse meshes.In this work,by performing extensive numerical experiments,we discover that zero penalty parameters lead to resonance errors in the multiscale DG methods,and taking positive penalty parameters can effectively reduce resonance errors and make the matrix in the global linear system have better condition numbers.

Numerical Simulations of the Flow Field around a Cylindrical Lightning Rod

As an important lightning protection device in substations,lightning rods are susceptible to vibration and potential structural damage under wind loads.In order to understand their vibration mechanism,it is necessary to conduct flow analysis.In this study,numerical simulations of the flow field around a 330 kV cylindrical lightning rod with different diameters were performed using the SST k-ωmodel.The flow patterns in different segments of the lightning rod at the same reference wind speed(wind speed at a height of 10 m)and the flow patterns in the same segment at different reference wind speeds were investigated.The variations of lift coefficient,drag coefficient,and vorticity distribution were obtained.The results showed that vortex shedding phenomena occurred in all segments of the lightning rod,and the strength of vortex shedding increased with decreasing diameter.The vorticity magnitude and the root mean square magnitudes of the lift coefficient and drag coefficient also increased accordingly.The time history curves of the lift coefficient and drag coefficient on the surface of the lightning rod exhibited sinusoidal patterns with a single dominant frequency.For the same segment,as the wind speed increased in a certain range,the root mean square values of the lift coefficient and drag coefficient decreased,while their dominant frequencies increased.Moreover,there was a proportional relationship between the dominant frequencies of the lift coefficient and drag coefficient.The findings of this study can provide valuable insights for the refined design of lightning rods with similar structures.

The interactions between avian brood parasites and their hosts provide an informative and easy-to-handle system for studying coevolution.Avian brood parasitism reduces the reproductive success of hosts,and thus,hosts have evolved anti-parasitic strategies,such as rejecting parasitic eggs and adopting aggressive nest defense strategies,to avoid the cost brought on by brood parasitism.To test whether host anti-parasitic strategies are adjusted with the risk of being parasitized when the breeding seasons of brood parasites and hosts are not synchronous,we conducted a field experiment assessing nest defense and egg recognition behaviors of the Isabelline Shrike(Lanius isabellinus),a host of the Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus).In the local area,the host Isabelline Shrike begins to breed in April,whereas the summer migratory Common Cuckoo migrates to the local area in May and begins to lay parasitic eggs.Results showed that nest defense behaviors of the Isabelline Shrike increases significantly after cuckoo arrival,showing higher aggressiveness to cuckoo dummies,with no significant difference in attack rates among cuckoo,sparrowhawk and dove dummies,but their egg rejection did not change significantly.These results imply that Isabelline Shrikes may adjust their nest defense behavior,but not egg rejection behavior,with seasonality.
