Miniaturised percutaneous nephrolithotomy:Its role in the treatment of urolithiasis and our experience

Miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy(pCNL)procedures have gained increased popularity in recent *** aim to reduce percutaneous tract size in order to lower complication rates,while maintaining high stone-free ***,miniaturized pCNL techniques have further expanded,and can currently be classified into mini-pCNL,minimally invasive pCNL(MIp),Chinese mini-pCNL(MpCNL),ultra-mini-pCNL(UMp),micro-pCNL,mini-micro-pCNL,and super-mini-pCNL(SMp).However,despite its minimally-invasive nature,its potential superiority in terms of safety and efficacy when compared to conventional pCNL is still under *** aim of this review is to summarise different available modalities of miniaturized pCNL,details of instruments involved,and their corresponding safety and *** particular,this article highlights the role of the SMp and our experience with this novel technique in management of ***,miniaturized pCNL techniques appear to be safe and effective alternatives to conventional pCNL for both adult and pediatric ***-designed,randomized studies are required to further investigate and identify specific roles of miniaturized pCNL techniques before considering them as standard rather than alternative procedures to conventional pCNL.

Recursion by herbivores is the repeated use of the same site or plants. Recursion by wild animals is rarely investigated but may be ubiquitous. Optimal foraging theory predicts site recursion as a function of the quality of the site, extent of its last use, and time since its last use because these influence site resource status and recovery. We used GpS collars, behaviour and site sampling to investigate recursion to foraging sites for two elephant Elephas maximus borneensis herds in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, Borneo, over a 12 month period. Recursion occurred to 48 out of 87 foraging sites and was most common within 48 hours or between 151-250 days, indicating two different types ofrecursion. Recursion was more likely to occur if the site had previously been occupied for longer. Moreover, the time spent at a site at recursion was the same as the time spent at the site on the first occasion. The number of days that had passed between the first visit and recursion was also positively correlated with how much time was spent at the site at recursion. Habitat type also influenced the intensity of site-use, with more time spent at recursion within riverine/open grass areas along forest margins compared to other habitat types. Recursion is a common behaviour used by the elephants and its pattern suggests it may be a foraging strategy for revisiting areas of greater value. The qualities of recursion sites might usefully be incorporated into landscape management strategies for elephant conservation in the area [Current Zoology 60 （4）： 551-559, 2014].

Translocations are an important conservation strategy for many species. However simply observing demographic growth of a translocated population is not sufficient to infer species recovery. Adequate genetic representation of the source population（s） and their long-term viability should also be considered. The woylie Bettongia penicillata ogilbyi has been subject to more formal translocations for conservation than any other marsupial that, up until recently, has resulted in one of the most suc- cessful species recoveries in Australia. We used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers to assess the genetic outcomes of trans- located woylie populations. These populations have lost genetic variability, differentiated fxom their source population and the supplementation program on two island populations appears to have failed. We discuss the conservation implications that our re- suits have for managing threatened species, outline some general recommendations for the management of present and future translocations and discuss the appropriate sampling design for the establishment of new populations or captive breeding programs that may mitigate the genetic ＇erosion＇ seen in our study species. This research provides some practical outcomes and a pragmatic understanding of translocation biology. The findings are directly applicable to other translocation programs .

Gold nanostructures are among the noble metal nanomaterials being intensely studied due to their good biocompatibility, tunable localized surface plasmon resonance （SpR）, and ease of modification. These properties give gold nano- structures many potential chemical and biomedical applications. Herein, we demonstrate the critical role of oxygen activation during the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide （H202） in the presence of photoexcited gold nanorods （AuNRs） by using electron spin resonance （ESR） techniques. Upon SpR excitation, 02 is activated first, and the resulting reactive intermediates further activate H202 to produce ,OH. The reactive intermediates exhibit singlet oxygen-like （102-1ike） reactivity, indicated by 102-specific oxidation reaction, quenching behaviors, and the lack of the typical 102 ESR signal. In addition, by using the antioxidant sodium ascorbate （NaA） as an example, we show that hydroxyl radicals from H202 activation can induce much stronger NaA oxidation than that in the absence of H202. These results may have significant biomedical implications. For example, as oxidative stress levels are known to influence tumorigenesis and cancer progression, the ability to control redox status inside tumor microenvironments using noble metal nanostructures may provide new strategies for regulating the metabolism of reactive oxygen species and new approaches for cancer treatment.
