In this study,the feasibility of producing eco-friendly bricks by using geopolymer technology and a waste grinding wheel(WGW)from the grinding wheel industries was ***,in order to meet industrial needs,for instance,in taiwan,approximately 500,000 grinding wheels are used *** is,a large number of“waste”grinding wheels are ***,few studies have been conducted on the use of WGWs as raw materials in geopolymer *** use of geopolymer technology to form bricks can avoid the utilization of clay and cement and even prevent the use of a high-temperature process in ***,it can decrease CO_(2) emission and energy consumption and thus,protect the *** this study,the following three major factors were considered:press-forming pressure(70 and 100 kgf/cm2),NaOH molar concentration(2 and 4M),and the ratio of binder fineaggregate(1:3,1:4,and 1:5).Under these conditions,the specimens were tested using the compressive strength test,water absorption test,microstructure analysis,a freezing–thawing test and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure *** optimal formulation was composed of 1:4 binder fine-aggregate ratio,4M NaOH concentration,and 100-kgf/cm2 ***,we used a WGW and achieved a compressive strength of 50.6 MPa after 28 days,which was greater than 32 MPa and conformed to the Grade A brick standard of National Standards of the Republic of China(13295).In conclusion,this brick fabrication method based on geopolymer technology was not only beneficial to the environment but also improved the efficiency of reutilizing WGW.

BACKGROUND Cockayne syndrome(CS)is a rare inherited disease characterized by progressive motor symptoms including muscle weakness,joint contracture,ataxia,and *** neurotoxin type A has been used for conditions such as dystonia and spasticity,but it has rarely been used in patients with *** SUMMARY We report a 6-year-and-9-mo old girl diagnosed with CS who received an injection of botulinum neurotoxin type A to manage her difficulty with walking.A total dose of 210 units of botulinum neurotoxin type A was administered into the bilateral tibialis posterior and gastrocnemius *** evaluate the treatment effects on spasticity,joint contracture,pain,and ataxia,measurement tools including the Modified Ashworth Scale,the passive range of motion,the Faces Pain Scale-Revised,and the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia,were *** first week after the injection,the Modified Ashworth Scale score for the plantar flexors and foot invertors improved bilaterally,along with advancements in the passive range of motion of the bilateral ankles and a lower score for the Faces Pain *** treatment effects persisted to the 8th week post-injection,but returned to baseline values at the 12th week post-injection,except for the pain *** Botulinum toxin injection can thus be considered as a treatment option for lower extremity spasticity,joint contracture,and pain derived from CS.

Background: Park-bench position is a commonly used position in patients operated with cerebellopontine tumor, microvascular decompression, or lesions of cerebellar hemisphere and vertebral artery. Several complications associated with this positioning have been described. However, the delayed airway complication resulting from park-bench position has been rarely reported in the literatures. Herein, we report a rare case of delayed airway obstruction after a posterior-fossa craniotomy with park-bench position for acoustic neuroma. Case presentation: A 43-year-old woman, who has a right acoustic neuroma, was placed in the park-bench position for a posterior-fossa craniotomy. The anesthesia and operation were performed smoothly. However, progressive swelling in the left neck with extending to left face occurred two hours after endo-tracheal extubation. Computed tomographic scan of neck revealed diffuse swelling of the muscles and deep soft tissue in the left side. No obvious embolization of vascular system including jugular vein was found in the sonography. Because of obstruction in upper airway, orotracheal intubation and a head-up position were performed. The clinical symptoms improved gradually since the third post-operative day. She was discharged with obvious complications on the 23rd day after the operation. Conclusion: The possible mechanisms may originate from the kinking of the jugular vein due to hyper-flexed neck position during surgery. To prevent such complication, we must take great care of the anesthetized patients when placed in the forced neck position and always keep this rare but so critical complication in mind.

Background: Cerebral blood vessels are mainly supplied by sympathetic nerves arising from the superior cervical ganglia and cerebral blood volume may be influenced by bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCG). Various stages of cerebral blood volume changes depended on the time following bilateral excision of SCG. In this study, we emphasize the subacute effect (two weeks) on the local cerebral blood flow (LCBF). Material and Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 250 ~ 400 gm (n = 20) were selected into two groups. Under the ambient temperature 20oC, the first group animals (n = 10) received sham operation and the other group animals (n = 10) underwent bilateral SCG. The LCBF and O2 delivery of 14 brain struc-tures were measured for each animal by the use of 14C-iodoantipyrine technique two weeks after the opera-tion. Results: The average of LCBF was decreased from 150 ml/100 gm/min to 129 ml/100 gm/min after bi-lateral SCG. Only the LCBF at basal ganglia was increased from 108 ml/min/100 g in the sham-operated group to 118 ml/min/100g in the SCG group. A mean of 14% reduction of LCBF was estimated. In 14 brain structures, the delivery amount of O2 was all decreased, except in basal ganglia. However, these changes of LCBF and the delivery amount of O2 at these 14 brain structures did not reach the significant differences. Conclusions: The present results show that chronic effect (two weeks) of bilateral SCG on LCBF was not only in a decrease of the LCBF, but also a decrease of local cerebral O2 delivery. However, the changes didn’t show the significant differences.
