Spatiotemporal evolution of wildfire activity during the PaleoceneEocene Thermal Maximum in China

The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum（PETM） was the most prominent warming event in the Cenozoic and serves as a geological analog for the current global warming driven by anthropogenic CO2emissions from burning fossil *** a primary disruptor of Earth's ecosystems, wildfire activity affects the balance of ecosystems, the global carbon cycle, and climate change. Therefore, studying the evolution and driving mechanisms of wildfires during the PETM is essential for predicting wildfire activity under global warming scenarios and for understanding the carbon cycle in the context of wildfire disturbances. Current research on wildfires during the PETM has mainly focused on the Northern Hemisphere, particularly Europe and North America, whereas studies on Chinese mainland remain limited. In this study, we analyzed black carbon（BC）concentration and carbon isotope(δ13C) in the Beigou section of the Nanyang Basin and the Xilutian section of the Fushun Basin to reconstruct the spatiotemporal evolution of wildfires in arid/semi-arid and humid zones. We integrated these findings with those of previous studies on the paleoclimate of the research area to elucidate the driving mechanisms behind wildfire occurrences. Our results indicate that wildfire activity weakened at the onset of the PETM, with the negative carbon isotope period characterized by low wildfire activity, except for a brief resurgence in the Nanyang Basin. During the recovery phase of the PETM, wildfire activity gradually increased, returning to the pre-PETM levels. The prolonged low wildfire state was likely caused by extremely high temperatures and precipitation as well as the resulting vegetation succession. During the PETM recovery phase, increased wildfire activity transformed “short-term carbon sinks” of the biological-atmospheric carbon cycle into “long-term carbon sinks” through the burial of BC. Tuning the local coordination environment of silver(Ⅰ) coordination networks with counterions for enhanced electrocatalytic CO_(2) reduction

Very recently, the local coordination environment of active sites has been found to strongly influence their performance in electrocatalytic CO_(2) reduction by tuning the intrinsic kinetics of CO_(2) activation and intermediate stabilization. It is imperative to elucidate the mechanism for such an influence towards the rational design of efficient catalysts;however, the complex interactions between the multiple factors involved in the system make it challenging to establish a clear structure–performance relationship. In this work, we chose ion-intercalated silver(I)-based coordination networks(AgCNs) with a well-defined structure as a model platform, which enables us to understand the regulation mechanism of counterions as the counterions are the only tuning factor involved in such a system. We prepared two isostructural Ag CNs with different intercalation ions or counterions of BF_(4)^(-) and ClO_(4)^(-)(named as AgCNs-BF_(4) and AgCNs-ClO_(4)) and found that the former has a more competitive CO_(2) electroreduction performance than the latter. AgCNs-BF_(4) achieves the highest Faradaic efficiency for CO_(2) to CO of 87.1% at-1.0 V(vs. RHE) with a higher partial current density, while AgCNs-ClO_(4) exhibits only 77.2% at the same applied *** characterizations and theoretical calculation reveal that the presence of BF_(4)^(-)is more favorable for stabilizing the COOH^(*) intermediate by weakening hydrogen bonds, which accounts for the superior activity of Ag CNs-BF_(4).

Rational design of new phases of tin monosulfide by first-principles structure searches

Tin monosulfide(Sn S), which is composed of earth-abundant elements, holds promise as useful high-performance solar absorber and thermoelectric material. In addition to the ground-state Pnma phase, a series of metastable phases in different crystalline structures have been reported experimentally or theoretically, yet the phase stability diagrams remain elusive. In this article, we provide a comprehensive materials design study of new phases of Sn S using first-principles global optimization structure search calculations. We find that the two-dimensional layered phases are generally more energetically favored than the three-dimensional connected phases. In addition, we discover several new phases with comparable energetics. Four lower-energy phases show clear phonon stabilities evidenced by an absence of imaginary modes. The electronic band structures, carrier transport properties, and absorption spectra of the newly discovered phases are investigated and discussed toward potential applications for solar cells and thermoelectric devices.

Testosterone attenuates pulmonary epithelial inflammation in male rats of COPD model through preventing NRF1-derived NF-κB signaling

Testosterone deficiency is common in male patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and may correlate with the deterioration of COPD. Clinical research suggests that testosterone replacement therapy may slow the COPD progression, but the specific biological pathway remains unclear. In this study, we explored the effect of testosterone on pulmonary inflammation in male COPD rats. The animals were co-treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cigarette to induce COPD. In COPD rats, nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1) and NF-κB p65 were upregulated. In cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-, LPS-, or the combination of CSE and LPS-treated L132 cells, NRF1 and p65 were also upregulated. Silencing NRF1 resulted in the downregulation of p65. ChIP‒seq, ChIP‒qPCR, and luciferase results showed that NRF1 transcriptionally regulated p65. Both male and female COPD rats showed an upregulated NRF1 level and similar pulmonary morphology. But NRF1 was further upregulated in male castrated rats. Further supplementing testosterone in castrated male rats significantly reduced NRF1, pulmonary lesions, and inflammation. Supplementation of testosterone also reduced the phosphorylation of p65 and IKKβ induced by LPS or CSE in L132 cells. Our results suggest that testosterone plays a protective role in pulmonary epithelial inflammation of COPD through inhibition of NRF1-derived NF-κB signaling and the phosphorylation of p65.

Ball milling promoted direct liquefaction of lignocellulosic biomass in supercritical ethanol

In the present work,ball milling was applied for the pretreatment of lignocellulose to obtain high conversion and bio-oil yield in supercritical *** milling substantially decreased the crystallinity and particle size of lignocellulose,thereby improving its accessibility in ethanol *** increased bio-oil yield of 59.2%was obtained for the ball milled camphor-wood sawdust at 300℃,compared with 39.6%for the original *** crystallinity signifi-cantly benefited the conversion of the cellulose component from 60.8%to 91.7%,and decreased particle size was beneficial for the conversion of all *** obtained bio-oil had a high phenolic content,as analyzed by gas chromatography-mass *** and retro-aldol condensation were observed during alcoholysis,and the reaction pathways of lignocellulose in supercritical ethanol were attributed to the action of free radicals.

Exploring causality with biliary atresia at different levels:two-sample Mendelian randomization study

Background In recent years,Mendelian randomization(MR)has been widely used to infer causality of related disease risk ***,this strategy has not been applied to biliary atresia(BA).Methods Genome-wide association studies(GWAS)data of 41 inflammatory cytokines,731 immune cell traits,and 1400 metabolites were obtained from public databases as exposure *** outcome information was obtained from a GWAS meta-analysis of 499 children with BA and 1928 normal *** variance weighting was the primary causality *** Q-test,MR-Egger intercept,MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier,and'leave-one-out'analyses were used for sensitivity *** MR,MR-Steiger,and Linkage Disequilibrium Score were used to exclude the effects of reverse causality,genetic association,and linkage *** MR results showed that a total of seven traits had potential causal relationships with BA,including three inflammatory cytokines:eotaxin(odds ratio(OR)=1.45,95%confidence interval(CI):1.08 to 1.95,pFDR=0.18),G-CSF(OR=4.21,95%CI:1.75 to 10.13,pFDR=0.05)and MCP-1/MCAF(OR=1.53,95%CI:1.12 to 2.10,pFDR=0.14);three immune cell traits:CD8dim NKT/T cells ratio(OR=0.59,95%CI:0.45 to 0.77,pFDR=0.06),CD8dim NKT counts(OR=0.58,95%CI:0.43 to 0.78,pFDR=0.06),CD8dim NKT/lymphocyte ratio(OR=0.63,95%CI:0.49 to 0.81,pFDR=0.06);one metabolite:X-12261 levels(OR=2.86,95%CI:1.73 to 4.74,pFDR=0.06).Conclusions In this study,eotaxin,G-CSF,MCP-1/MCAF,and X-12261 levels were shown to be risk factors for ***,CD8dim NKT/T cells ratio,CD8dim NKT counts,and CD8dim NKT/lymphocyte ratio were protective factors for *** findings provided a promising genetic basis for the etiology,diagnosis,and treatment of BA.

Expression Analysis of Genes Related to Auxin Metabolism at Different Growth Stages of Pak Choi

Pak choi is a low-temperature vernalized plant that readily undergoes premature bolting during spring, but little is known about the governing molecular regulation of vernalization. In order to enhance our understanding of mechanism about premature bolting, we discussed the relationship between auxin(indole-3-acetic acid, IAA) and flowering of pak choi. During vernalization, hormone metabolism is an important regulatory pathway, and IAA plays a specific role. IAA metabolism has been studied in Arabidopsis thaliana and other plants, but not in pak choi. In this paper, the IAA content in pak choi shoot apices during vernalization and different growth stages was compared. The IAA content decreased significantly after low-temperature treatment(4 °C) and then increased rapidly during vegetative growth. During floral bud initiation,the IAA content decreased rapidly and was the lowest. Expressions of genes encoding key IAA metabolic enzymes were analyzed, and a major synthetase-encoding gene was downregulated, while a key degrading enzyme-encoding gene was upregulated during each comparison period,resulting in decreased IAA content. Expressions of four genes(Bra034975, Bra030246, Bra012239 and Bra040296) were consistent with changes in the IAA content. The functions of differentially expressed genes(DEGs) were analyzed, and 15 DEGs were found to be related to IAA *** findings illuminated the molecular mechanism regulating IAA content during vernalization in pak choi.

High-altitude cerebral edema(HACE)is a potentially fatal encephalopathy associated with a time-dependent exposure to the hypobaric hypoxia of *** formation of HACE is affected by both vasogenic and cytotoxic *** over-activated microglia potentiate the damage of blood-brain barrier(BBB)and exacerbate cytotoxic *** light with the activation of microglia in HACE,we aimed to investigate whether the over-activated microglia were the key turning point of acute mountain sickness to *** in vivo experiments,by exposing mice to hypobaric hypoxia(7000 m above sea level)to induce HACE model,we found that microglia were activated and migrated to blood *** depletion by PLX5622 obviously relieved brain *** in vitro experiments,we found that hypoxia induced cultured microglial activation,leading to the destruction of endothelial tight junction and astrocyte ***-regulated nuclear respiratory factor 1(NRF1)accelerated pro-inflammatory factors through transcriptional regulation on nuclearfactorkappa B p65(NF-kB p65)and mitochondrial transcription factorA(TFAM)in activated microglia under ***1 also up-regulated phagocytosis by transcriptional regulation on caveolin-1(CAV-1)and adaptorrelated protein complex 2 subunit beta(AP2B1).The present study reveals a new mechanism in HACE:hypoxia over-activates microglia through up-regulation of NRF1,which both induces inflammatory response through transcriptionally activating NF-kB p65 and TFAM,and enhances phagocytic function through up-regulation of CAV-1 and AP2B1;hypoxia-activatedmicroglia destroy the integrity of BBB and release pro-inflammatory factors that eventually induce HACE.
