Helium ion scanning microscopy(HIM)is a novel high-resolution scanning microscopy technique that uses helium ions instead of electrons to form images of the highest quality and resolution,providing a sub-nanometer resolution sputter uncoated biological ***,we took advantage of HIM to explore the cell surface of Tritrichomonas foetus,a protist parasite of cattle that provokes hard infection and abortion in *** describe thin protrusions,like nanotubes described in other cells,with different sizes(27 nm to 81 nm in thickness)and various lengths(from 73 nm to 2μm),as well bulbous structures either budding from the cell surface or present in the extremities of some *** flagella also presented these thin protrusions and different protein decoration,similar to those previously described using freeze-fracture *** between two cells were also seen,and their role in infection is *** cell surface was also examined and showed several pits indicative of endocytic activity and other types of arrays of *** observations were confirmed using Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM),negative staining,and conventional thin sectioning for observation by transmission electron *** findings provide new and relevant information that may contribute to a better understanding of protozoan biology and its interaction with mammalian cells.

Distillation column control is widely explored in literature due to its complexity and importance in chemical and petrochemical industries. In this process, pressure represents one of the most important variables to be controlled. However, there are few studies about how pressure affects the dynamic behavior of distillation columns and most research on distillation column control involve direct manipulation of cooling fluid through the condenser. Nevertheless, such an approach demands constant changes in cooling fluid flowrates that are commonly by the order of tons per hour, which can be difficult to work or even unfeasible in a real plant. Furthermore, this strategy is usually avoided, as it can cause fouling and corrosion acceleration. The hot-vapor bypass strategy fits well as a solution for these issues, eliminating the need to dynamically manipulate cooling fluid flowrates in the condensation unit. This work presents the modeling and simulation of a conventional distillation column for the separation of water and ethanol, in which a comparative study between a conventional pressure control and a control using hot-vapor bypass was performed. The main results were obtained through dynamic simulations which considered various disturbances in the feed stream, and demonstrated superior performance by the hot-vapor bypass system over the usual scheme proposed in literature, while evaluating the lntegral Absolute Error （IAE） norm as the control performance index.

To evaluate the therapeutic effects of bone marrow-derived CD11b+CD14+ monocytes in a murine model of chronic liver *** liver damage was induced in C57BL/6 mice by administration of carbon tetrachloride and ethanol for 6 mo. Bone marrow-derived monocytes isolated by immunomagnetic separation were used for therapy. The cell transplantation effects were evaluated by morphometry, biochemical assessment, immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent ***11b+CD14+ monocyte therapy significantly reduced liver fibrosis and increased hepatic glutathione levels. Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β, in addition to pro-fibrotic factors, such as IL-13, transforming growth factor-β1 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 also decreased, while IL-10 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 increased in the monocyte-treated group. CD11b+CD14+ monocyte transplantation caused significant changes in the hepatic expression of α-smooth muscle actin and *** therapy is capable of bringing about improvement of liver fibrosis by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, as well as increasing anti-fibrogenic factors.

Expression Variability of Carbohydrates at the Cell Wall Surface of Aspergillus Species and in Vitro Susceptibility to Amphotericin B, Voriconazole and Itraconazole

This study evaluated the expression of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, L-fucose, D-galactose and glucose/mannose on the cell wall surface of Aspergillus species using lectins and the in vitro antifungal activity of AMB （amphotericin B）, VOR （voriconazole） and ITC （itraconazole）. Con A （Concanavalin A）, WGA （wheat germ agglutinin）, UEA-I （Ulex europeus agglutinin I） and PNA （peanut agglutinin）, all conjugated with horseradish peroxidase, were used. For the susceptibility tests, sterilized fiat-bottomed 96-well microtitre plates were used and the procedures were followed of the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute. The inoculum was added to the wells with the tested drugs and the plates were incubated at 25 ℃ for 48 h before reading the results to determine the MIC （minimal inhibitory concentration） of AMB, VOR and ITC. All Aspergillus strains showed low MIC for AMB （0.031-1 μg/mL） and ITC （0.031-0.25μg/mL）. However, the isolates were less susceptible to VOR, for which the MIC ranged from 4 to 16 μg/mL. The results of this study indicate that the expression of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and glucose/mannose on the cell wall surface of the Aspergillus species evaluated showed greater stability of expression in the fungal growth both in vitro and in parasitism.

Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. In Brazil, 8.7% of the population between 20 and 79 years of age has diabetes, estimating 11.6 million diabetics. It is commonly associated with other co-morbidities such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and obesity, which put these patients into a high cardiovascular risk profile. This study was performed using the medical records of enrolled population attending a Family Health Unit of Alto do Coqueirinho, Salvador, Northeastern Brazil, consisting of one doctor, one nurse, one dentist, one nursing technician and six community health workers. Medical records and data provided by the system of the Primary Care Information (SIAB), showed total of 2495 patients. Considering the prevalence morbidities in this population, hypertension was present in 9.8% of patients and Type 2 Diabetes in only 3.6%. Since the prevalence of morbidities is the key indicator to the development of public health policies, it seems important a better knowledge on the prevalence rates of diabetes, prediabetes and its co-morbidities of this population. Future plans and projects for health professionals will be based on a consistent medical record.

AIM: To report a systematic review,establishing the available data to an unpublished 2a strength of evidence,better handling clinical ***: A systematic review was performed using MEDLINE,EMBASE,Cochrane,LILACS,Scopus and CINAHL databases. Information of the selected studies was extracted on characteristics of trial participants,inclusion and exclusion criteria,interventions(mainly,mucosal resection and submucosal dissection vs surgical approach) and outcomes(adverse events,different survival rates,mortality,recurrence and complete resection rates). To ascertain the validity of eligible studies,the risk of bias was measured using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. The analysis of the absolute risk of the outcomes was performed using the software Rev Man,by computingrisk differences(RD) of dichotomous variables. Data on RD and 95%CIs for each outcome were calculated using the Mantel-Haenszel test and inconsistency was qualified and reported in χ2 and the Higgins method(I2). Sensitivity analysis was performed when heterogeneity was higher than 50%,a subsequent assay was done and other findings were ***: Eleven retrospective cohort studies were selected. The included records involved 2654 patients with early gastric cancer that filled the absolute or expanded indications for endoscopic resection. Threeyear survival data were available for six studies(n = 1197). There were no risk differences(RD) after endoscopic and surgical treatment(RD = 0.01,95%CI:-0.02-0.05,P = 0.51). Five-year survival data(n = 2310) showed no difference between the two groups(RD = 0.01,95%CI:-0.01-0.03,P = 0.46). Recurrence data were analized in five studies(1331 patients) and there was no difference between the approaches(RD = 0.01,95%CI:-0.00-0.02,P = 0.09). Adverse event data were identified in eight studies(n = 2439). A significant difference was detected(RD =-0.08,95%CI:-0.10--0.05,P < 0.05),demonstrating better results with endoscopy. It is generally expected that the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will bring health and social benefits to their host city and to Brazil. This assumption comes from “common sense”, as a logical conclusion arising from the fact that host cities “inspire” and stimulate lifestyle changes. Benefits are also expected on tourism, self-image, architecture and the economy of the country as a whole. But are these expectations real and evidence-based? What parts of these “facts” are concrete and which ones are not? This paper suggests available ways of quantifying positive effects of hosting an Olympic Game, and puts the focus of this approach on the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games and their true legacy, seeking scientific certainties.

The Quality of Life for People with Parkinson’s Disease in Relation to Their Oral Health

The present study aimed to evaluate the correlation between the oral health status and the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease. The Decayed, Missing, Filled (DMFT) index and the quality of life questionnaire for people with Parkinson’s disease (Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39) were used as evaluation instruments. Sixty-two people with a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease between stages 1 and 3, age between 46 and 86 years, of both sexes, with an average time of disease evolution of 7 years, participated in the study. Data were evaluated using the Pearson’s correlation test, and one-way ANOVA (p < 0.05). The mean DMFT obtained was 23;there was no correlation between the DMFT values and the total score of the Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39 neither in its domains, nor between the DMFT and the stages of Parkinson’s disease (p = 0.61). We found that the oral health of parkinsonians is deficient due to the high number of missing teeth, but their perception of quality of life is favorable despite their motor limitations related to mobility, and activities of daily living.
