Stimulating effect of thyroid hormones in peripheral nerve regeneration:research history and future direction toward clinical therapy

Injury to peripheral nerves is often observed in the clinic and severe injuries may cause loss of motor and sensory *** extensive investigation,testing various surgical repair techniques and neurotrophic molecules,at present,a satisfactory method to ensuring successful recovery does not *** successful molecular therapy in nerve regeneration,it is essential to improve the intrinsic ability of neurons to survive and to increase the speed of axonal *** to induce Schwann cell phenotypical changes to prepare the local environment favorable for axonal regeneration and ***,any molecule that regulates gene expression of both neurons and Schwann cells could play a crucial role in peripheral nerve *** and experimental studies have reported that thyroid hormones are essential for the normal development and function of the nervous system,so they could be candidates for nervous system *** review provides an overview of studies devoted to testing the effect of thyroid hormones on peripheral nerve *** it emphasizes the importance of combining biodegradable tubes with local administration of triiodothyronine for future clinical therapy of human severe injured *** highlight that the local and single administration of triiodothyronine within biodegradable nerve guide improves significantly the regeneration of severed peripheral nerves,and accelerates functional *** technique provides a serious step towards future clinical application of triiodothyronine in human severe injured *** possible regulatory mechanism by which triiodothyronine stimulates peripheral nerve regeneration is a rapid action on both axotomized neurons and Schwann cells.

Numerical simulation of sedimentation of microparticles usingthe discrete particle method

A mathematical model has been formulated based on the combined continuous and discrete particle method for investigating the sedimentation behaviour of microparticles in aqueous suspensions, by treating the fluid phase as continuous and the particles phase as discrete, thus allowing the behaviour of individual particles to be followed and the evolution of the structure of the particle phase to be investigated as a function of time. The model takes into account most of the prevailing forces acting on individual particles including van der Waals attractive, electrostatic repulsive, gravitational, Brownian, depletion, steric, contact and drag forces. A code has also been developed based on the model. This paper reports some preliminary modelling results of mono-dispersed microparticles settling in aqueous suspensions under various conditions. The results show the short time dynamics of the fluid phase, which has a similar order of magnitude to the particle phase. Such short time dynamics could bear significance to processes such as particle aggregation when their size becomes very small. Preliminary analyses of the results have also been carried out on the evolution of particle settling based on a newly proposed parameter, local normalised volume fraction （LNVF）.

Disclosing and Evaluating Artistic Research

Purpose: This study expands on the results of a stakeholder-driven research project on quality indicators and output assessment of art and design research in Flanders-the Northern, Dutchspeaking region of Belgium. Herein, it emphasizes the value of arts & design output registration as a modality to articulate the disciplinary demarcations of art and design ***/methodology/approach: The particularity of art and design research in Flanders is first analyzed and compared to international examples. Hereafter, the results of the stakeholderdriven project on the creation of indicators for arts & design research output assessment are discussed. Findings: The findings accentuate the importance of allowing an assessment culture to emerge from practitioners themselves, instead of imposing ill-suited methods borrowed from established scientific evaluation models(Biggs & Karlsson, 2011)-notwithstanding the practical difficulties it generates. They point to the potential of stakeholder-driven approaches for artistic research, which benefits from constructing a shared metadiscourse among its practitioners regarding the continuities and discontinuities between "artistic" and "traditional" research, and the communal goals and values that guide its knowledge production(Biggs & Karlsson, 2011;Hellstr?m, 2010;Ysebaert & Martens, 2018). Research limitation: The central limitation of the study is that it focuses exclusively on the "Architecture & Design" panel of the project, and does not account for intra-disciplinary complexities in output assessment. Practical implications: The goal of the research project is to create a robust assessment system for arts & design research in Flanders, which may later guide similar international projects. Originality/value: This study is currently the only one to consider the productive potential of(collaborative) PRFSs for artistic research.

The antiproton annihilation detector system of the ATRAP experiment

The ATRAP (antihydrogen trap collaboration) at cERN (European organization for nuclear research) has developed a completely new, larger and more robust apparatus in the second experimental zone. The antiproton annihilation detector system consists of 10 layers of scintillating fibers, counts the antihydrogen atoms and determines the annihilation vertex of the atoms. This diagnostic element will allow to optimize the production of cold antihydrogen sufficiently to permit the optical observations and measurements. Using this new apparatus thousands of antihydrogen atoms have been produced within a combined Penning-Ioffe trap. These observed antihydrogen atoms resolve a debate about whether positrons and antiprotons can be brought together to form antihydrogen atoms within the divergent magnetic fields of a quadrupole Ioffe trap.

We propose a new high order accurate nodal discontinuous Galerkin(DG)method for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations(PDE)on unstructured polygonal Voronoi *** than using classical polynomials of degree N inside each element,in our new approach the discrete solution is represented by piecewise continuous polynomials of degree N within each Voronoi element,using a continuous finite element basis defined on a subgrid inside each *** call the resulting subgrid basis an agglomerated finite element(AFE)basis for the DG method on general polygons,since it is obtained by the agglomeration of the finite element basis functions associated with the subgrid *** basis functions on each sub-triangle are defined,as usual,on a universal reference element,hence allowing to compute universal mass,flux and stiffness matrices for the subgrid triangles once and for all in a pre-processing stage for the reference element ***,the construction of an efficient quadrature-free algorithm is possible,despite the unstructured nature of the computational *** order of accuracy in time is achieved thanks to the ADER approach,making use of an element-local space-time Galerkin finite element *** novel schemes are carefully validated against a set of typical benchmark problems for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes *** numerical results have been checked with reference solutions available in literature and also systematically compared,in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy,with those obtained by the corresponding modal DG version of the scheme.
