Impact of designed infection control educational program on nurses’knowledge and compliance with standard precautions at maternity hospitals

Objectives:This study aimed to assess the nurses’knowledge and compliance with infection control standard precautions and evaluate the impact of the designed infection control educational program on nurses’knowledge and compliance with standard precautions at the maternity *** and Methods:A quasi‑experimental one‑group pretest‑posttest design was used on convenient sample of 60 nurses working at Obstetrics and Gynecological hospital in Cairo University Hospital,Kasr El Ainy,who received“designed infection control educational program”for 6 *** data were collected through the questionnaire comprising demographics,knowledge,and compliance with standard precautions *** nurses’knowledge and compliance score were compared before and after ***:The studied nurses had higher level of knowledge(85.3%)and compliance(92.8%)regarding infection control standard precautions after the educational program compared to before the *** results revealed statistically significant difference between before and after the program regarding nurses’knowledge score(15.5±2.9 vs.17.1±1.6,P<0.001)and compliance score(58.5±13.2 vs.74.3±5.1,P<0.001).In addition,there was insignificant relation between nurses’knowledge and compliance with standard precautions both before(r=0.952,P=0.474)and after educational program(r=0.164,P=0.223).Conclusion:The nurses’level of knowledge and compliance regarding infection control standard precautions was significantly improved after the ***,it is recommended that periodical educational programs regarding the standard precautions of infection control are essential for nurses at maternity hospital.

Hepatitis B virus as a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma: There is still much work to do

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a significant health problem that can result in progression to liver cirrhosis, decompensation, and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). On a country level, the prevalence of chronic HBV infection varies between 0.1% and 35.0%, depending on the locality and the population being investigated. One-third of all liver cancer fatalities worldwide are attributable to HBV. The adoption of standard birth-dose immunization exerted the most significant impact on the decline of HBV prevalence. HCC incidence ranges from 0.01% to 1.40% in noncirrhotic patients and from 0.9% to 5.4% annually, in the settings of liver cirrhosis. Although antiviral therapy significantly reduces the risk of developing HBV-related HCC, studies have demonstrated that the risk persists, and that HCC screening is still essential. This review discusses the complex relationship between HBV infection and HCC, recent epidemiological data, different aspects of clinical disease characteristics, and the impact of antiviral therapy in this context.

Assessment of the Characteristics of the Municipal Solid Waste Compost in Lebanon

Waste management is crucial due to the fast increase of human population, causing an increase in solid waste generation which if not properly managed causes environmental problems. Around 57% of the wastes generated from homes are made up of green material (fruits, vegetables…). Thus, reusing and recycling green wastes through composting is one way of reducing the waste load to landfills. Composting is the transformation of raw organic materials into organic soil amendments that provide nutrients to crops and enhance the tilth, fertility, and productivity of soils. Aerobic windrow composting system at Sukomi Greensite facility located at Karantina is performed, where materials biodegrade under controlled conditions to produce compost. However, assessment of the quality of the compost is fundamental in order to determine its usages. Thus, regular testing of physical, chemical and biological parameters was performed for adequate monitoring purposes. The basic objective of this study was to determine the characteristics of the Lebanese municipal solid waste compost on a yearly basis and compare these characteristics amongst the years. Hence, each parameter was tested and compared to the BNQ international Canadian standards for proper classification of the compost and adequate identification of its usages. The preliminary data obtained were statistically diagnosed through principal component analysis by Spadv55 software. All the data reflected the normal content value of the studied parameters with minor differences between the years except for year 2007 which demonstrated higher levels of Potassium, Phosphate, Lead and Cadmium. The characteristics of the compost enabled it to be used as a soil amendment on all types of agricultural and landscape commodities at the adequate dosages and proper timing. Characteristics and outcome of newborn admitted with acute bilirubin encephalopathy to a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit

Background Acute bilirubin encephalopathy (ABE) still represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world,especially in developing *** aimed to determine the prevalence of ABE based on the Johnson bilirubininduced neurologic dysfunction (BIND) score and to describe the discharge *** We prospectively studied all newborns ≥ 35 weeks with ABE by evaluating signs of mental sensorium,muscle tone,and cry patterns over 1 *** 12% (81 out of 674) of the newborns admitted for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia had a BIND score > *** admission age was 6 ± 4.1 days;total serum bilirubin (TSB) was 31.2± 10 mg/dL (range 17.5-75.2).Of these newborns,40.7% and 21% had evidence of haemolysis and sepsis,*** mortality was 9.9%;58% of the newborns showed signs of mild-to-moderate BIND at discharge,while 32.1% survived with an apparently normal *** BIND score was significantly correlated with admission TSB (r=0.476,P < 0.001).Similarly,BIND score at discharge was correlated with admission TSB (r=0.442,P < 0.001) and admission BIND score (r =0.888,P < 0.001).The regression model showed that admission TSB (P < 0.001) and maternal illiteracy (P =0.034) were predictors of the BIND score at admission,while admission BIND score was the best indicator of the discharge score (P < 0.001).Conclusions ABE is still a major problem in our *** TSB and maternal illiteracy are good predictors of bilirubin encephalopathy at admission and discharge.

DLBT:Deep Learning-Based Transformer to Generate Pseudo-Code from Source Code

Understanding the content of the source code and its regular expression is very difficult when they are written in an unfamiliar ***-code explains and describes the content of the code without using syntax or programming language ***,writing Pseudo-code to each code instruction is ***,neural machine translation is used to generate textual descriptions for the source *** this paper,a novel deep learning-based transformer(DLBT)model is proposed for automatic Pseudo-code generation from the source *** proposed model uses deep learning which is based on Neural Machine Translation(NMT)to work as a language *** DLBT is based on the transformer which is an encoder-decoder *** are three major components:tokenizer and embeddings,transformer,and *** code line is tokenized to dense *** transformer captures the relatedness between the source code and the matching Pseudo-code without the need of Recurrent Neural Network(RNN).At the post-processing step,the generated Pseudo-code is *** proposed model is assessed using a real Python dataset,which contains more than 18,800 lines of a source code written in *** experiments show promising performance results compared with other machine translation methods such as Recurrent Neural Network(RNN).The proposed DLBT records 47.32,68.49 accuracy and BLEU performance measures,respectively.

3-Bromopyruvate(3BP) is a new, promising anticancer alkylating agent with several notable functions. In addition to inhibiting key glycolysis enzymes including hexokinase II and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), 3BP also selectively inhibits mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, angiogenesis, and energy production in cancer cells. Moreover, 3BP induces hydrogen peroxide generation in cancer cells(oxidative stress effect) and competes with the LDH substrates pyruvate and lactate. There is only one published human clinical study showing that 3BP was effective in treating fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma. LDH is a good measure for tumor evaluation and predicts the outcome of treatment better than the presence of a residual tumor mass. According to the Warburg effect, LDH is responsible for lactate synthesis, which facilitates cancer cell survival, progression, aggressiveness, metastasis, and angiogenesis. Lactate produced through LDH activity fuels aerobic cell populations inside tumors via metabolic symbiosis. In melanoma, the most deadly skin cancer, 3BP induced necrotic cell death in sensitive cells, whereas high glutathione(GSH) content made other melanoma cells resistant to 3BP. Concurrent use of a GSH depletor with 3BP killed resistant melanoma cells. Survival of melanoma patients was inversely associated with high serum LDH levels, which was reported to be highly predictive of melanoma treatment in randomized clinical trials. Here, we report a 28-year-old man presented with stage IV metastatic melanoma affecting the back, left pleura, and lung. The disease caused total destruction of the left lung and a high serum LDH level(4,283 U/L). After ethics committee approval and written patient consent, the patient received 3BP intravenous infusions(1-2.2 mg/kg), but the anticancer effect was minimal as indicated by a high serum LDH level. Incidence and risk factors of post-phototherapy neonatal rebound hyperbilirubinemia

Background To determine the incidence and risk factors of post-phototherapy rebound hyperbilirubinemia because data about bilirubin rebound in neonates are lacking and few studies have concerned this condition. Methods A prospective observational study was conducted on 500 neonates with indirect hyperbilirubinemia who were treated according to standard guidelines. Total serum bilirubin (TSB) was measured at 24–36 h after phototherapy;significant bilirubin rebound (SBR) is considered as increasing TSB that needs reinstitution of phototherapy. Results A total of 124 (24.9%) neonates developed SBR with TSB increased by 3.4 (2.4–11.2) mg/dL after stopping pho-totherapy. Multiple logistic regression model revealed the following significant risk factors for rebound: low birth weight (B = 1.3,P < 0.001, OR 3.5), suspected sepsis (B = 2.5,P < 0.001, OR 12.6), exposure to intensive phototherapy (B = 0.83, P= 0.03, OR 2.3), hemolysis (B = 1.2,P < 0.001, OR 3.1), high discharge bilirubin level (B = 0.3,P = 0.001, OR 1.3), and short duration of conventional phototherapy (B = ? 1.2,P < 0.001, OR 0.3). Conclusions SBR should be considered in neonates with hemolysis, low birth weight, suspected sepsis, short duration of conventional phototherapy, exposure to intensive phototherapy, and relatively high discharge TSB. These risk factors should be taken into account when planning post-phototherapy follow-up.

Developmental competence of bovine oocytes with increasing concentrations of nano-copper and nano-zinc particles during in vitro maturation

Objective: To evaluate copper and zinc concentrations in plasma and follicular fluid from cattle ovaries, and estimate the impact of rational concentrations of copper and zinc oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs & ZnO-NPs) supplemented during in vitro maturation (IVM) against DNA damage of cumulus cells, glutathione content in oocytes and on consequent embryo development. Methods: Oocytes were obtained from 2 to 8 mm follicles by aspiration method for IVM. Replicates of experiments were performed on different days, with a separate batch of cumulus oocytes complex for each day. Results: The DNA damage of oocytes and cumulus cells significantly decreased with supplemental CuO-NPs or ZnO-NPs concentrations of 0.7 and 1.0 μg/mL in the IVM medium compared to medium without CuO-NPs or ZnO-NPs (P < 0.01). Total glutathione concentrations in oocytes and cumulus cells significantly increased following supplementation with both 0.7 and 1.0 μg/mL CuO-NPs or ZnO-NPs in comparison with 0 and 0.4 μg/mL CuO-NPs or ZnO-NPs supplemented groups (P < 0.01). Supplementation of CuO-NPs or ZnO-NPs during IVM medium at any concentration had no significant effect on cleavge rate. Both CuO-NPs and ZnO-NPs significantly increased blastocyst rates when oocytes were matured with 0.7, 1.0 μg/mL CuO-NPs concentrations (P < 0.01). In contrast, addition of 1.5 μg/mL of CuO-NPs or ZnO-NPs to the maturation media resulted in detrimental effects on the developmental competence of bovine oocytes confirming toxicity induced by CuO-NPs and ZnO-NPs in high concentrations. Conclusions: CuO-NPs or ZnO-NPs-treated bovine oocytes during IVM show low level of DNA fragmentation and increased intracellular glutathione content of cumulus cells. In vitro embryo development is improved by supplementation of rational concentrations of CuO-NPs or ZnO-NPs to culture media. Toxicity induced by CuO-NPs and ZnO-NPs is confirmed in high concentrations.

Anticancer activity of Aloe vera and Calligonum comosum extracts separetely on hepatocellular carcinoma cells

Objective: To investigate the in vitro anticancer effect of Aloe vera(A. vera) and Calligonum comosum(C. comosum) extracts against hepatocellular carcinoma(HepG 2) cells. Methods: Hep G2 cells were tested against different doses of A. vera and C. comosum. Viability of the cells was assessed by MTT assay. Evaluation of apoptosis and DNA damage in HepG 2 cells were performed using annexin V apoptosis detection kit. The expression of p53 and anti-apoptotic(Bcl-2) were tested by real time-PCR and flow cytometer analyser. Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections from untreated and treated HepG 2 cells were observed using light ***: The IC50 values of A. vera and C. comosum extracts were(10.45 ± 0.31) and(9.60 ± 0.01) μg/mL respectively. The extracts separately increased cytotoxicity against HepG 2 cells in a time and dose dependent manners. Also, it apparently induced apoptosis through increase P53 and decrease Bcl-2 genes ***: The results indicated that the extracts could have anti-hepatocarcinogenic effect, at least in part, through modulation of apoptosis.
