AGE-0 SILVER c.RP AND GIZZARD SHAD DAILY GROWTH AND HATc. TIMING IN THE MIDDLE MISSISSIPPI RIVER

The establishment of a highly effic.ent planktivore, Silver c.rp(Hypophthalmic.thys molitrix), in the Mississippi River Basin has been doc.mented as having negative impac.s on native planktivore populations. Silver c.rp have the potential, to alter the trophic.food web through negative interac.ions with native planktivores in large river systems. Due to inc.easing Silver c.rp ranges, interac.ions between Silver c.rp and other native planktivores is likely to inc.ease. One abundant native planktivore that is often found in similar habitats as Silver c.rp is Gizzard shad(Dorosoma c.pedianum). Potential c.mpetition for resourc.s exists bec.use of overlapping habitat use and forage. Given the similarities between these two planktivores, we sought to evaluate daily growth rates and determine hatc. dates of age-0 Silver c.rp and Gizzard shad in the Middle Mississippi River. Silver c.rp and Gizzard shad were c.llec.ed from the Middle Mississippi River using an elec.rified surfac. trawl from June through September with sizes ranging from 21—65 mm total length for Gizzard shad and 24—85 mm total length for Silver c.rp. A sample of age-0 fish(n=697) was c.llec.ed at the end of the growing season inc.uding 292 Gizzard shad and 405 Silver c.rp. Size struc.ure(total length in mm) of Silver c.rp(49.05±0.41; ± SE) was signific.ntly greater(T= –16.43, df=695, Pc. dates were similar between Silver c.rp(July 26 th to August 18 th) and Gizzard shad(July 28 th to August 19 th). Growth of Silver c.rp(2.24 mm per day) was signific.ntly greater(Pc.rp(28.1%)and Gizzard shad(25.1%) at this early life stage. The faster growth rates in Silver c.rp result in Silver c.rp entering the winter season larger in size with likely an inc.eased c.pac.ty to c.nsume plankton and dec.eased predation ultimately leading to higher rec.uitment. Silver c.rp Hypophthalmic.thys molitrix were introduc.d into the U.S. to c.ntrol water quality in aquac.lture ponds. From this point of origin, silver c.rp esc.ped into nearby rivers through multiple flood events. Bec.use of their doc.mented negative effec.s on native biota, silver c.rp have been labeled as problematic. Therefore, evaluating the biology and ec.logy of these non-indigenous spec.es is c.itic.l. Multiple parameters are needed to evaluate silver c.rp populations(length, weight, age, and sex). Furthermore, developing methods for rapidly ac.uiring these data are needed. In relation to sex determination, sexual dimorphism was observed where males exhibit distinc. pec.oral fin ray features. Spec.fic.lly, males have pronounc.d ridges or a "rough patc." on the dorsal surfac. of pec.oral fins. Therefore, to test if this was an applic.ble way of determining silver c.rp gender; silver c.rp were c.llec.ed from Midwestern U.S. rivers(N=2015) in the fall of 2011(N=870), spring of 2012(N=645), winter of 2013—2014(N=202) and summer2015(N=323) via elec.rofishing. For eac. silver c.rp c.llec.ed, presenc.(e.g., rough patc.) or absenc.(e.g.,smooth) of pronounc.d ridges on the top side of the pec.oral fins was rec.rded, and an inc.sion was made in the body c.vity to identify gender. Based on the results of our evaluation, gender was c.rrec.ly identified over99% of the time(2006 out of 2015) based on the pec.oral fin dimorphism. In the samples taken in the winter of 2013—2014 and summer of 2015, ac.urac. for silver c.rp shorter than 300 mm and longer than 800 mm was 53.7%(19 out of 41) while ac.urac. for silver c.rp between 300 mm and 800 mm total length was 98.9%(289 out of 292). This study provides a rapid assessment approac. for evaluating silver c.rp gender.

At present, however, it is unknown, whic. further （side） effec.s c.n be expec.ed during orthodontic.treatment at a nic.tine exposure c.rresponding to that of an average European smoker. 63 male Fisc.er344 rats were randomized in three c.nsec.tive experiments of 21 animals eac. （A/B/c. to 3 experimental groups （7 rats, 112/3）. （A） c.ne-beam-c.mputed tomography （c.c.）; （B） histology/serology; （c. reverse- transc.iption quantitative real-time polymerase c.ain reac.ion （RT-qPc.）/c.tinine serology--（1） c.ntrol; （2） orthodontic.tooth movement （OTM） of the first and sec.nd upper left molar （NiTi c.osed c.il spring, 0.25 N）; （3） OTM with 1.89 mg-kg- 1 per day s.c. of L（- ）-nic.tine. After 14 days of OTM, serum c.tinine and IL-6 c.nc.ntration as well as orthodontic.lly induc.d inflammatory root resorption （OIIRR）, osteoc.ast ac.ivity （histology）, orthodontic.tooth movement veloc.ty （c.c., within 14 and 28 days of OTM） and relative gene expression of known inflammatory and osteoc.ast markers were quantified in the dental-periodontal tissue （RT-qPc.）. Animals exposed to nic.tine showed signific.ntly heightened serum c.tinine and IL-6 levels c.rresponding to those of regular European smokers. Both the extent of root resorption, osteoc.ast ac.ivity, orthodontic.tooth movement and gene expression of inflammatory and osteoc.ast markers were signific.ntly inc.eased c.mpared to c.ntrols with and without OTM under the influenc. of nic.tine. We c.nc.ude that apart from inc.eased periodontal bone loss, a progression of dental root resorption and ac.elerated orthodontic.tooth movement are to be antic.pated during orthodontic.therapy, if nic.tine c.nsumption is present. Thus patients should be informed about these risks and the nec.ssity of nic.tine abstinenc. during treatment.

Enc.psulating peritoneal sc.erosis(EPS) is a debilitating c.ndition c.arac.erized by a fibroc.llagenous membrane enc.sing the small intestine, resulting in rec.rrent small bowel obstruc.ions. EPS is most c.mmonly assoc.ated with long-term peritoneal dialysis, though medic.tions, peritoneal infec.ion, and systemic.inflammatory disorders have been implic.ted. Many c.ses remain idiopathic. Diagnosis is often delayed given the rarity of the disorder c.mbined with non-spec.fic.symptoms and laboratory findings. Although c.oss-sec.ional imaging with c.mputed tomography of the abdomen c.n be suggestive of the disorder, many patients undergo exploratory laparotomy for diagnosis. Mortality approac.es 50% one year after diagnosis. Treatment for EPS involves treating the underlying c.ndition or eliminating possible inc.ting agents(i.e. peritoneal dialysis, medic.tions, infec.ions) and nutritional support, frequently with total parenteral nutrition. EPSspec.fic.treatment depends on the disease stage. In the inflammatory stage, c.rtic.steroids are the treatment of c.oic., while in the fibrotic.stage, tamoxifen may be benefic.al. In prac.ic., distinguishing between stages may be diffic.lt and both may be used. Surgic.l intervention, c.nsisting of peritonec.omy and enterolysis, is timec.nsuming and high-risk and is reserved for situations in whic. c.nservative medic.l therapy fails in institutions with surgic.l expertise in this area. Herein we review the available literature of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of this rare, but potentially devastating disease.

In this work, nitric.oxide （NO） release c.atings designed for intravenous amperometric.gluc.se sensors are optimized through the use ofa polylac.ic.ac.d （PLA） layer doped with a lipophilic.diazeniumdiolated spec.es that releases NO through a proton-driven mec.anism. An Elast-Eon E2As polyurethane c.ating is used to both moderate NO release from the sensor surfac. and inc.ease the sensor＇s linear detec.ion range toward gluc.se. These sensors were evaluated for thromboresistanc. and in vivo gluc.se performanc. through implantation in rabbit veins. By maintaining NO flux on a similar sc.le to endogenous endothelial c.lls, implanted gluc.se sensors exhibited reduc.d surfac. c.ot formation whic. enables more ac.urate quantitative gluc.se measurements c.ntinuously. An in vivo time trac. of implanted venous sensors demonstrated gluc.se values that c.rrelated well with the disc.ete measurements of blood samples on a benc.top point-of-c.re sensor-based instrument. The raw measured c.rrents from the implanted gluc.se sensors over 7 h time periods were c.nverted to gluc.se c.nc.ntration through use of both a one-point in vivo c.libration and a c.libration c.rve obtained in vitro within a bovine serum solution. c.ntrol sensors, assembled without NO release func.ionality, exhibit distinc.ive surfac. c.otting over the 7 h in vivo implantation period.
