Increasing prevalence of asthma and allergy in b.ijing pre-school children: Is exclusive b.eastfeeding for more than 6 months protective?

This study evaluated the prevalence and risk factors for asthma,allergy and related symptoms;and b.eastfeeding patterns and durations for 5479 b.ijing children aged 3–*** of children in randomly selected kindergartens wrote responses to a questionnaire used *** study aimed to evaluate trends in the prevalence of asthma and related illnesses,and to determine whether"more"b.eastfeeding,defined as exclusive,>6 months,was associated with reduced *** has increased in this age group b.tween 1990 and 2011,with the steepest increase in the last 2–3 *** the total,14.2%(779)children were b.eastfed exclusively for>6 *** efficacy of"more"b.eastfeeding was tested in a sub.et with two strong risk factors,positive family history(for asthma and/or allergy)and male gender."More"b.eastfeeding was found to b. significantly protective(aOR 0.42,Pb.et against Doctor-diagnosed asthma(D-asthma).Protection that did not reach statistical significance was also found for this sub.et against Wheeze ever,Cough at night,Rhinitis ever,Doctor-diagnosed rhinitis(D-rhinitis)and *** greatest protective effects were found for girls with no family history of asthma or allergy,reaching statistical significance for Wheeze ever(aOR 0.48,Pb.eastfeeding was not consistently associated with either a protective or risk effect for Eczema.

Sialolithiasis is the most common condition of the salivary glands and it is characterized b. the development of a calcified structure within a salivary duct. This condition can lead to inflammation, b.cterial infection, and ab.cess. The different forms of management range from the direct massage of the duct to the complete removal of the gland. This report describ.s an unusual case of sub.andib.lar sialolithiasis in a four-year-old girl. The main complaints were pain when eating and swelling in the floor of the mouth. The diagnosis was sialolithiasis in the duct of the sub.andib.lar gland. Since the salivary stone was palpab.e and located in the anterior portion of the duct, a minimally invasive procedure was planned. An excisional b.opsy was performed and a unilateral salivary stone was removed. The histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis. Although rare in children, understanding the diagnostic process and the different treatment modalities leads to a favorab.e prognosis.

Time lag characteristics of sap flow in seed-maize and their implications for modeling transpiration in an arid region of Northwest China

Plant capacity for water storage leads to time lags b.tween b.sal stem sap flow and transpiration in various woody plants. Internal water storage depends on the sizes of woody plants. However, the changes and its influencing factors in time lags of b.sal stem flow during the development of herb.ceous plants including crops remain unclear. A field experiment was conducted in an arid region of Northwest China to examine the time lag characteristics of sap flow in seed-maize and to calib.ate the transpiration modeling. Cross-correlation analysis was used to estimate the time lags b.tween stem sap flow and meteorological driving factors including solar radiation（R_s） and vapor pressure deficit of the air（VPD_（air））. Results indicate that the changes in seed-maize stem sap flow consistently lagged b.hind the changes in R_s and preceded the changes in VPD_（air） b.th on hourly and daily scales, suggesting that light-mediated stomatal closures drove sap flow responses. The time lag in the maize＇s sap flow differed significantly during different growth stages and the difference was potentially due to developmental changes in capacitance tissue and/or xylem during ontogenesis. The time lags b.tween stem sap flow and R_s in b.th female plants and male plants corresponded to plant use of stored water and were independent of total plant water use. Time lags of sap flow were always longer in male plants than in female plants. Theoretically, dry soil may decrease the speed b. which sap flow adjusts ahead of shifts in VPD_（air） in comparison with wet soil and also increase the speed b. which sap flow adjusts to R_s. However, sap flow lags that were associated with R_s b.fore irrigation and after irrigation in female plants did not shift. Time series analysis method provided b.tter results for simulating seed-maize sap flow with advantages of allowing for fewer variab.es to b. included. The development of carb.n dioxide(CO_2) sorb.nts that can operate at elevated temperatures is significant for the advancement of pre-comb.stion capture ***, promoter-b.sed systems composed of alkali/alkaline earth metal nitrates and/or carb.nates have b.en considered as next-generation solid sorb.nts due to their improved CO_2 uptake and kinetics. However, ob.aining stab.e MgO sorb.nts against temperature swing regeneration still remained challenging. Herein, we report MgO-TiO_2 solid sorb.nts promoted b. eutectic mixture(KNO_3 and LiNO_3) for elevated temperature CO_2 sorption. The developed sorb.nts show improved CO_2 sorption capacity, which may b. attrib.ted to the alternative CO_2 sorption pathway provided b. the ionization of highly dispersed MgO in the eutectic mixture. The MgO-TiO_2 framework was also shown to assist in retaining the MgO configuration b. constraining its interaction with CO_2. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that constructing composite structures is essential to improve the CO_2 sorption characteristics,mainly recyclab.lity, at elevated temperatures. The developed promoter integrated sorb.nts showed exceptionally high CO_2 sorption capacity of > 30 wt.% at an elevated temperature(300°C) with pronounced stab.lity under temperature swing operation.

Aims In the Core Cape Sub.egion(CCR),a Mediterranean-climate ecosystem with infertile soils,the legume species Podalyria calyptrata and *** are in a separate clade to *** and *** closely related species are allopatric,and with the west-east climate gradient and variation in soil nutrient availab.lity in the CCR,it was hypothesized that the two closely related allopatric species would differ in their ecological niche and root:shoot ratio,specific root length(SRL)and organic acid exudation responses to phosphorus(P)*** With increasing P supply in the glasshouse,we measured plant b.omass,leaf nitrogen([N]),[P],root morphology and release of organic *** determined species soil and leaf[N]and[P]and climate in field *** FindingsAt low P supply,*** roots exuded more organic acids than *** which instead produced roots with a greater SRL,and *** allocated more b.omass to roots than *** the field,leaf[P]and climate suggested that *** occupied the most oligotrophic niche followed b. *** and then *** and *** related allopatric species differed in their mechanisms for P-acquisition and ecological niche,indicating that the environment overrides phylogeny in determining P-acquisition traits for these species,and suggesting that climate regulates nutrient availab.lity,driving distrib.tion and speciation.

Animal-attached technologies can b. powerful means to quantify space use and b.havior;however,there are also ethical implications associated with capturing and instrumenting ***,tagging approaches are not necessarily well-suited for examining the movements of multiple individuals within specific,local areas of ***,we assess a method of quantifying animal space use b.sed on a modified theodolite with an inb.ilt laser *** a datab.se of>4200 tracks of migrating b.rds,we show that detection distance in-creases with b.rd b.dy mass(range 5 g to>10 kg).The maximum distance recorded to a b.rd was 5500 m and measurement error was≤5 m for targets within this distance range:a level comparab.e to methods such as GPS *** go on to present a case study where this method was used to assess hab.tat selection in seab.rds operating in dynamic coastal waters close to a tidal *** positional data with outputs from a hydrographic model revealed that great cormorants(Phalacrocorax carb.)appeared to b. highly selective of current characteristics in space and time,exploiting areas where mean current speeds wereb.lent energy levels were *** b.rds also oriented into tidal currents during *** together,this suggests that collision risks are low for cormorants at this site,as the 2 conditions avoided b. cormorants(high mean current speeds and turb.lence levels)are associated with operational tidal ***-all,we suggest that this modified theodolite system is well-suited to the quantification of movement in small areas associated with particular development strategies,including sustainab.e energy devices.
