Aerosol-radiation interaction and its variation in North China within 2015–2019 period under continuous PM_(2.5)improvements

A study was conducted on aerosol-radiation interactions over six cities in this region within the 2015–2019 period.WRF-Chem simulations on 2017 showed that based on the six-city average,the aerosol load(PM_(2.5)concentrations)of 121.9,49.6,43.3,and 66.3μg/m^(3)in January,April,July,and October,mainly lowered the level of downward shortwave radiation by 38.9,24.0,59.1,and 24.4 W/m~2and reduced the boundary layer height by 79.9,40.8,87.4,and 31.0 m,via scattering and absorbing solar radiation.The sensitivity of meteorological changes to identical aerosol loads varied in the order July>January>October and April.Then,the cooling and stabilizing effects of aerosols further led to increases in PM_(2.5),by23.0,3.4,4.6,and 7.3μg/m^(3)respectively in the four months.The sensitivity of the effect of aerosols on PM_(2.5)was greatest in January rather than in July,contrary to the effect on meteorology.Moreover,a negative linear relation was observed between daily BLH reductions and aerosol loads in fall and winter,and between PM_(2.5)increases and aerosol loads in all seasons.With the PM_(2.5)pollution improvements in this region,the aerosol radiative forcing was effectively reduced.This should result in daily BLH increases of 10–24 m in fall and winter,and the estimates in Beijing agreed well with the corresponding results based on AMDAR data.Additionally,the reduction in aerosol radiation effects brought about daily PM_(2.5)decreases of 1.6-2.8μg/m^(3),accounting for 7.0%–17.7%in PM_(2.5)improvements.

Ethylene-propylene block copolymer(EbP) is a vital component in impact polypropylene copolymer(IPC), yet its distribution in the multiphase composite material and how it influences the phase structure and the mechanical properties are not well understood. In this work,four IPCs were investigated by atomic force microscopy-infrared(AFM-IR) to assess the phase compositions in situ, based on which in conjunction with the chain microstructure information obtained ex situ the distributions of the copolymer components were derived for each alloy. For the IPCs whose EbP comprises long P and long E segments, the EbP fraction was found to phase separate from the rubber and the PP matrix to form the cores of the disperse particles with the E-P segmented copolymer(EsP). In contrast, in the IPC with EbP composed of long P and short E segments, the EbP fraction formed an outer shell for the rubber particles with the cores comprising the EsP alone, and this IPC, containing a lower E comonomer content than its counterpart, exhibited both better impact resistance and higher flexural modulus. These results clarify how the chain structure of EbP governs the phase morphology in IPC, which in turn impacts the properties of the composite material.

As the promising catalysts for the water-gas shift(WGS)reaction,the activity of Au-CeO_(2) composites is susceptible to the aggregation size and electronic state of Au species.Previous reports were extensively focused on the discrepancy between nonmetallic Au and metallic Au nanoparticles,whereas the understanding of the authentic role of the isolated Au atoms was limited.Herein,we investigated the catalytic behavior and structural information over two types of Au/CeO_(2) catalysts,in which the predominant conjunctions were isolated Au1-CeO_(2) and Aun-CeO_(2),respectively.Based on comprehensive characterizations,particularly by in-situ Raman and in-situ DRIFTS,we found that the isolated Au atoms were responsible for enhancing the reducibility of the CeO_(2) matrix.The CO adsorption ability on the isolated Au sites was significantly inferior to clustered Au atoms,especially at relatively high temperatures(>200°C).As a result,the boosted O vacancy on the isolated Au1-CeO_(2) conjunctions could improve the H2O activation ability for the Au-CeO_(2) catalysts and demonstrate a comparable activity to the clustered Aun-CeO_(2) sites.This work might deepen understanding of the catalytic function for the isolated Au1 site within Au/CeO_(2) systems while catalyzing the WGS reaction.

A Riemannian gradient descent algorithm and a truncated variant are presented to solve systems of phaseless equations|Ax|^(2)=y.The algorithms are developed by exploiting the inherent low rank structure of the problem based on the embedded manifold of rank-1 positive semidefinite matrices.Theoretical recovery guarantee has been established for the truncated variant,showing that the algorithm is able to achieve successful recovery when the number of equations is proportional to the number of unknowns.Two key ingredients in the analysis are the restricted well conditioned property and the restricted weak correlation property of the associated truncated linear operator.Empirical evaluations show that our algorithms are competitive with other state-of-the-art first order nonconvex approaches with provable guarantees.

Intracellular pH(pHi)is a fundamental indicator of cellular physiological state,regulating cellular state and function,and has important research values.Although various probes for measuring intracellular pH were available,it is challenging to reflect pHi in real-time and reversible manners.Herein,we developed a whole-cell bioluminescent(BL)probe based on wild type BL bacteria,photobacterium phosphoreum(P.phosphoreum),to determine and image pHi.The dependence of BL intensity of P.phosphoreum on pH values of culture solutions was established.It was found that BL intensity could respond to the change of pH values rapidly and reversibly.We further revealed that P.phosphoreum maintained pH homeostasis in the extracellular pH(pHe)within the range of 5.0–7.0,while intracellular pH homeostasis was destroyed at the alkaline pHe.This method opens up the enormous potential of BL bacteria as an alternative to fluorescence for monitoring and imaging pHi.

Discriminative low-rank embedding with manifold constraint for image feature extraction and classification

The robustness against noise, outliers, and corruption is a crucial issue in image feature extraction. To address this concern, this paper proposes a discriminative low-rank embedding image feature extraction algorithm. Firstly, to enhance the discriminative power of the extracted features, a discriminative term is introduced using label information, obtaining global discriminative information and learning an optimal projection matrix for data dimensionality reduction. Secondly, manifold constraints are incorporated, unifying low-rank embedding and manifold constraints into a single framework to capture the geometric structure of local manifolds while considering both local and global information. Finally, test samples are projected into a lower-dimensional space for classification. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves classification accuracies of 95.62%, 95.22%, 86.38%, and 86.54% on the ORL, CMUPIE, AR, and COIL20 datasets, respectively, outperforming dimensionality reduction-based image feature extraction algorithms.

Nests are important structures for birds to raise their offspring and for signaling.Many birds incorporate feathers into the nest,since feathers were traditionally thought to serve the function of insulation.Hypotheses in recent years have considered that some birds place feathers in conspicuous locations in the nest for decoration to trigger a fear response in the competitors.In this study,we investigated whether decorative feathers could deter nest usurpation by Crested Mynas(Acridotheres cristatellus)by manipulating nest box contents.The results revealed that Crested Mynas preferred black feathers to white feathers as decorations and occupied nest boxes decorated with black feathers significantly less than those decorated with white feathers,suggesting that black decorative feathers in the nest could be more effective in preventing nest usurpation by Crested Mynas and that white decorative feathers may have other functions.The black feathers in the nest are prominently placed at the edge of the nest to convey the message that“this nest is occupied”or“the owner of this nest has been preyed upon”to visitor Crested Mynas,thus effectively preventing them from usurping the nest at a later stage.

Is the Cape Stone Forest in Shantou City formed by wave erosion? A comparison of the pedestal rocks on the coasts and the mountains of Queshi in eastern Guangdong, China

Cape Stone Forest is a group of granite rock pillars(pedestal rocks) towering over Shilin Lake, on the southern shore of Shantou Bay in eastern Guangdong, China. The rock pillars were previously identified as sea stacks because they have marine notch-like concave sidewalls at their base, and more importantly, the lake is immediately adjacent to the bay, which is exposed to the open sea. However, rock pillars similar in shape and size can also be found at the top of Queshi Mountain, which is only about 300 meters northwest of the lake and about 85 meters above sea level. Therefore, the marine origin of Cape Stone Forest is seriously questioned. In this study, 3D imagery and drone technology were used to collect data in the investigations without direct manual measurements in the water or on the mountain. It shows that the concave sidewalls of the rock pillars in the lake and on the mountains occur at different heights and are exposed to different directions, while a natural sea stack on Mayu Island at the mouth of Shantou Bay has a horizontal notch parallel to the sea level, although the granite rock of the sea stack is the same as that of the lake and the mountains. The eastern side of the island, where the sea stack is located, is exposed to the open sea but blocks large waves for the rock pillars in the lake. Therefore, the origin of Cape Stone Forest cannot be explained by wave-based mechanisms. The only satisfactory explanation that takes into account all the field evidence is that the narrow rock pillars of the lake and mountain were formed by chemical weathering that penetrated closely the spaced joints of the granite rock, and the notch-like concave sidewalls were formed by more effective chemical weathering at the base of the pillars.

A Dual Discriminator Method for Generalized Zero-Shot Learning

Zero-shot learning enables the recognition of new class samples by migrating models learned from semanticfeatures and existing sample features to things that have never been seen before. The problems of consistencyof different types of features and domain shift problems are two of the critical issues in zero-shot learning. Toaddress both of these issues, this paper proposes a new modeling structure. The traditional approach mappedsemantic features and visual features into the same feature space;based on this, a dual discriminator approachis used in the proposed model. This dual discriminator approach can further enhance the consistency betweensemantic and visual features. At the same time, this approach can also align unseen class semantic features andtraining set samples, providing a portion of information about the unseen classes. In addition, a new feature fusionmethod is proposed in the model. This method is equivalent to adding perturbation to the seen class features,which can reduce the degree to which the classification results in the model are biased towards the seen classes.At the same time, this feature fusion method can provide part of the information of the unseen classes, improvingits classification accuracy in generalized zero-shot learning and reducing domain bias. The proposed method isvalidated and compared with othermethods on four datasets, and fromthe experimental results, it can be seen thatthe method proposed in this paper achieves promising results.
