Centrifugal blood pumps have become popular for adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO)due to their superior blood handling and reduced thrombosis risk featured by their secondary flow paths that avoid stagnant ***,the high rotational speed within a centrifugal blood pump can introduce high shear stress,causing a significant shear-induced hemolysis *** Revolution pump,the Rotaflow pump,and the CentriMag pump are three of the leading centrifugal blood pumps on the *** many experimental and computational studies have focused on evaluating the hydraulic and hemolytic performances of the Rotaflow and CentriMag pumps,there are few on the Revolution ***,a thorough direct comparison of these three pumps'flow characteristics and hemolysis is not *** this study,we conducted a computational and experimental analysis to compare the hemolytic performances of the Revolution,Rotaflow,and CentriMag pumps operating under a clinically relevant condition,i.e.,the blood flow rate of 5 L/min and pump pressure head of 350 mmhg,for adult ECMO *** silico simulations were used to characterize the shear stress distributions and predict the hemolysis index,while in vitro blood loop studies experimentally determined hemolysis *** simulation results and experimental data demonstrated that the CentriMag pump caused the lowest hemolysis while the Revolution pump generated the highest hemolysis.

Update on human papillomavirus vaccination: where are we now?

Infection with human papillomavirus(hPV) is the major cause of pre-invasive and invasive lesions of the urogenital tract, resulting in morbidity and mortality worldwide. hPV-related infection is responsible for most cases of cervical cancer, a leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. Developed countries have screening programs in place to detect precancerous lesions at early stages; in resource-limited settings however, hPV related diseases are often identified in advanced stages. This is due to limitations in the availability and roll out of effective screening programs. The relatively recent availability of the hPV vaccine has provided a new public health opportunity to decrease the incidence of hPV-related disease. The high mortality rates seen in developing countries could be reduced through effective implementation of hPV vaccination programs. Large trials have proven the efficacy of bivalent, quadrivalent vaccine and most recently 9-valent vaccine. Uptake in vaccination remains low due to multiple barriers including lack of education, lack of access, and costs. New strategies are being assessed to increase access, increase knowledge and reduce costs that may result in feasible vaccination programs worldwide. The goal of this article is to review the effectiveness and safety of the current hPV vaccines available, vaccine delivery strategies, cost effectiveness, and efforts to improve the acceptability. A literature search was conducted through Pub Med using the terms "hPV vaccination, and safety, and males, and acceptability and strategies, and cost effectiveness,"focusing on articles published between 2006 and 2015. The most relevant and larger scale trials were evaluated for discussion.

The importance of the extracellular matrix （ECM） in contributing to structural, mechanical, functional and tissue-specific features in the body is well appreciated. while the ECM was previously considered to be a passive bystander, it is now evident that it plays active, dynamic and fexible roles in shaping cell survival, differentiation, migration and death to varying extents depending on the specific site in the body. Dendritic cells （DCs） are recognized as potent antigen presenting cells present in many tissues and in blood, continuously scrutinizing the microenvironment for antigens and mounting local and systemic host responses against harmful agents. DCs also play pivotal roles in maintaining homeostasis to harmless self-antigens, critical for preventing autoimmunity. what is less understood are the complex interactions between DCs and the ECM in maintaining this balance between steady-state tissue residence and DC activation during inflammation. DCs are finely tuned to inflammation-induced variations in fragment length, accessible epitopes and post-translational modifications of individual ECM components and correspondingly interpret these changes appropriately by adjusting their profiles of cognate binding receptors and downstream immune activation. The successful design and composition of novel ECM-based mimetics in regenerative medicine and other applications rely on our improved understanding of DC-ECM interplay in homeostasis and the challenges involved in maintaining it.

FINE SEDIMENT OF ThE UPPER MISSISSIPPI ANDILLINOIS RIVERS AND ThE DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES

Increased sediment loads and sedimentation rates in rivers and streams have produced major disturbances to the society. however, while discussing f sediment transport and sediment induced problems focuses have often been given to those related to coarse sediments; tine sediment induces problems have been primarily investigated in bays and estuaries. In the case of Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS), increased turbidity and suspended sediment solids in the water column; heavy sediment deposition in channel boarders, backwater lakes, and side channels have shown to be problematic. Besides their impacts on human activities, fine sediments have also adversely affected water quality and flora and fauna of the river System. The total areas that affected, their accessibility, the amount, not to mention the contaminants involved, are complex challenges to the e1Yorts to restore the rivers’ functions. Many resource managers consider heavy sediment deposition in backwaters and side channels to be one of the most severe environmental problems on the UMRS. Large rivers are priceless resources and sedimentation plays a vital role in their sustainability. The example and experience learned from the UMRS can provide valuable information for management practices of other river basins.

This study presents an approach for generating a global land mapping dataset of the satellite measurements of CO_(2)total column(XCO_(2))using spatio-temporal geostatistics,which makes full use of the joint spatial and temporal dependencies between *** mapping approach considers the latitude-zonal seasonal cycles and spatio-temporal correlation structure of XCO_(2),and obtains global land maps of XCO_(2),with a spatial grid resolution of 1°latitude by 1°longitude and temporal resolution of 3 *** evaluate the accuracy and uncertainty of the mapping dataset in the following three ways:(1)in cross-validation,the mapping approach results in a high correlation coefficient of 0.94 between the predictions and observations,(2)in comparison with ground truth provided by the Total Carbon Column Observing Network(TCCON),the predicted XCO_(2)time series and those from TCCON sites are in good agreement,with an overall bias of 0.01 ppm and a standard deviation of the difference of 1.22 ppm and(3)in comparison with model simulations,the spatio-temporal variability of XCO_(2)between the mapping dataset and simulations from the CT2013 and GEOS-Chem are generally *** generated mapping XCO_(2)data in this study provides a new global geospatial dataset in global understanding of greenhouse gases dynamics and global warming.
