Background:Hemodialysis(HD) per se is a risk factor for *** the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction(BFr) exercise in HD patients,identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent D-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training *** aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher D-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance exercise(rE) with BFr on this ***:Two hundred and six HD patients volunteered for this study(all with a glomerular filtration rate of rE+BFr session consisted of 50% arter.al occlusion pressure during 50 min sessions of HD(intradialytic exercise).rE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases(each lasting 2 s) and were supervised by a strength and conditioning ***:Several var.ables were associated with elevated levels of D-dimer,including higher blood glucose,citrate use,recent cardiovascular events,recent intercurrents,higher inflammatory status,catheter.as vascular.access,older patients(>70 years old),and HD ***,rE+BFr significantly incr.ases D-dimer.after 4 *** with borderline baseline D-dimer levels(400-490 ng/mL) displayed incr.ased risk of elevating D-dimer over the nor.al range(≥500 ng/mL).Conclusion:These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for HD patients who wish to undergo rE+BFr.D-dimer.and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to maximize safety during rE+BFr.

Dear editor:We sincerely thank Matthew *** for his insightful commentary1 on our recent publication in the Jour.al of Sport and Health Science.2 Clarkson's pioneering work in the development and application of blood flow restriction (BFr) exercise protocols has undeniably laid the groundwork for subsequent investigations in this field,including our own.(3-6)His commentary not only highlights the relevance and timeliness of our study but also offers valuable perspectives on refining safety considerations for intradialytic BFr exercise among hemodialysis patients.

The Effect of UV Light and CO<sub>2</sub>in the Production of Polyunsaturated Aldehydes in <i>Skeletonema costatum</i>(Bacillariophycea)

Skeletonema costatum was submitted to two experiments using UV lights and CO2with the purpose of observing changes in the lipids profile and the synthesis of polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUA) after cell disruption. When cells receive CO2 supply, it was noticed that the production of PUA was significantly lower. The same was observed when the culture was tr.ated with a dose of 45.9 kJ·m-2 of ultra-violet A/B ray. The premise to all experiments was the production of 2,4-heptadienal compared to the supply of EPA as substrate. As a result, the same synthesis rate was observed both when the CO2 tr.atment was applied and in the experiment control. On the other hand, the culture subjected to ultraviolet radiation showed a 68% gr.ater demand with the utilization of the substrate. These obser.ations suggested that EPA was consumed before cell disruption and was probably exuded to the surrounding environment as a sign of stress. Changes in cell morphology could be observed by the migration of the chloroplast nearby the cell wall, where PUA was produced, indicating a defense strategy.
