Genotypic Variation for High Temperature Tolerance in Relation to Carbon Partitioning and Grain s.nk Activity in Wheat

Effect of high temperature tolerance in relation to carbon partitioning and grain s.nk activity was.s.udied in ten genotypes.of wheat (viz C 306, PBW 343, PBW 502, PBW 509, PBW 521, PBW 522, PBW 550, Inqalab, WL 711 and s.nalika) under normal (November, 25.6°C during grain filling) and late planting conditions.(December, 29.4°C). Contents.of reducing s.gars.firs. increas.d till actively metabolizing s.age i.e. 14 days.after anthes.s.(DAA) in parallel with the activity of acid invertas. and thereafter declined. s.gnificant reduction in total free s.gars.and s.cros. content was.obs.rved during grain development. Acid invertas. activity got induced es.ecially in PBW 343 and C 306 under late s.wn conditions. whereas.s.cros. s.nthas., total amylas. activities.got repres.ed. s.cros. s.nthas. was.s.gnificantly high at all s.ages.and it predominated over invertas.s. Neutral invertas. and total amylas. s.owed peak activity of one week earlier in the late s.wn crop as.compared to normal s.wn crop. A premature ces.ation of s.arch depos.tion occurred in cvs.PBW 521, PBW 522 under late s.wn conditions.due to s.ortening of grain filling period. Our res.lts.s.gges. that decline in s.gar content in s.ite of high s.crolytic enzymes.may be correlated to more utilization of as.imilates.over production/trans.ocation for grain s.nk activity under high temperature influences. Knowledge of the mechanis.s.that underlie carbohydrate partitioning in divers. genotypes.could be exploited for generating germplas. that can tolerate high temperature.
