Virtual ballistic impact testing of Kevlar soft armor:Predictive and validated finite element modeling of the V0-V100 probabilistic penetration response

This works presents the first fully validated and predictive capability to model the V_0-V_(100) probabilistic penetration response of a woven fabric using a yarn-level fabric finite element model. The V_0-V_(100) curve describes the probability of complete fabric penetration as a function of projectile impact velocity. The exemplar case considered in this paper comprises of a single-layer, fully-clamped, plain-weave Kevlar fabric impacted at the center by a 17-gr, 0.22 cal FSP or fragment-simulating projectile. Each warp and fill yarn in the fabric is individually modeled using 3 D finite elements and the virtual fabric microstructure is validated in detail against the experimental fabric microstructure. Material and testing sources of statistical variability including yarn strength and modulus, inter-yarn friction, precise projectile impact location, and projectile rotation are mapped into the finite element model. A series of impact simulations at varying projectile impact velocities is executed using LS-DYNA on the fabric models, with each model comprising unique mappings. The impact velocities together with the outcomes(penetration, nonpenetration) are used to generate the numerical V_0-V_(100) curve which is then validated against the experimental V_0-V_(100) curve. The numerical Vi-Vrdata(impact, residual velocities) is also validated against the experimental Vi-Vrdata. For completeness, this paper also reports the experimental characterization data and its statistical analysis used for model input, viz. the Kevlar yarn tensile strengths, moduli, and inter-yarn friction, and the experimental ballistic test data used for model validation.

This article explores the role of public health systems before, during, and after disasters, particularly within the scope of the United Nations Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. It also examines the role of scientific and technological developments in assisting with improving the resilience of public health professionals and the communities they work in. In addition, it explores how the wide-ranging activities in public health have already contributed to the improved management of disasters and a decrease in associated risks. The article identifies areas of synergy in five key areas of recent policy and practice in public health(the health systems approach, risk assessments, the WHO/UNISDR/HPA Disaster Risk Management fact sheets, chronic disease and disasters, and mental health impacts following disasters) and makes suggestions based on lessons identified from the previous(2005) global disaster risk reduction framework. In particular, we advocate the use of scientific evidence that addresses health and disaster risk simultaneously to increase the effectiveness of policy and practice in disaster risk reduction, health, and public health.

Consistent decision-making requires a structured and systematic evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of different choice *** transport projects,policies or policy measures,and transport options evaluation,various multi-criteria methods have been developed and effectively applied to complement conventional cost effectiveness and cost benefit *** present paper aims to present a state-of-the-art review of pertinent literature regarding multi-criteria decision-making(MCD M)in the transport sector,focusing on the basic concepts and procedure for multi-criteria decision-making in the transport sector,along with its role and evaluation parameters.A large selection of over 50 papers and publications between 1982 and 2019 have been reviewed,in order to provide an insight into the uses of MCDM methods in transport *** commonly used MCDM metho ds techniques are identified and discussed through a wide review of pertinent literature,research and case studies,leading to interesting conclusions that provide a valuable insight into the use of multicriteria analysis techniques in transport sector related *** on the wide range of reviewed literature,it is concluded that MCDM methods are being applied mostly to evaluate transport options rather than transport policies or projects and the most commonly used MCDM method in transport sector problems are analytic hierarchy process(AHP).

For dairy production systems, nitrogen is an expensive nutrient and potentially harmful waste product. With three quarters of fed nitrogen ending up in the manure, significant research efforts have focused on understanding and mitigating lactating dairy cows' nitrogen losses. Recent changes proposed to the Nutrient Requirement System for Dairy Cattle in the US include variable efficiencies of absorbed essential AA for milk protein production. This first separation from a purely substrate-based system, standing on the old limiting AA theory, recognizes the ability of the cow to alter the metabolism of AA. In this review we summarize a compelling amount of evidence suggesting that AA requirements for milk protein synthesis are based on a demand-driven system. Milk protein synthesis is governed at mammary level by a set of transduction pathways, including the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1(mTORC1), the integrated stress response(ISR), and the unfolded protein response(UPR). In tight coordination, these pathways not only control the rate of milk protein synthesis, setting the demand for AA, but also manipulate cellular AA transport and even blood flow to the mammary glands, securing the supply of those needed nutrients. These transduction pathways, specifically mTORC1, sense specific AA, as well as other physiological signals, including insulin, the canonical indicator of energy status. Insulin plays a key role on mTORC1 signaling, controlling its activation, once AA have determined mTORC1 localization to the lysosomal *** on this molecular model, AA and insulin signals need to be tightly coordinated to maximize milk protein synthesis rate. The evidence in lactating dairy cows supports this model, in which insulin and glucogenic energy potentiate the effect of AA on milk protein synthesis. Dear Editor, The maize Mutator （MuDRIMu） transposon family is the most active DNA transposon in plants （Lisch, 2002）. The Mu family contains diverse elements, all sharing similar -215-bp terminal inverted repeats （TIRs）. MuDR is the autonomous element, and a transcriptionally active MuDR is required for transposition of the non-autonomous Mu elements （Chomet et al., 1991）. MuDR contains two genes, mudrA and mudrB （Figure 1A）; mudrA encodes the MURA transposase, and mudrB encodes a protein with unknown function. To avoid the deleterious effects of transposons, plants have acquired mechanisms to epigenetically silence them. Silenced Mu ele- ments become heavily methylated, and their reactivation is very rare. To date, only UV-B radiation treatments have reac- tivated silenced Mu （Walbot, 1999）.

A discrete-event system simulation and animation program was developed to enhance the efficiency of a truck-excavator operation and reduce the environmental impact of haulage in an open-cut coal mine with multiple-pit operations. In any mine, a key objective is to have sufficient equipment for production and not to have excess to where it becomes counterproductive. Due to the advent of responsible mining,environmental regulations, and eco-friendly practices, these factors must also be considered in the analysis. Simulation studies can be financially advantageous for both the optimization of existing mine operations and new development phases in a mine. This study is a new approach to use discrete-event system simulation for mine systems, in order to investigate and possibly reduce environmental impact considering mining haulage performance and production target. A hypothetical layout of a surface coal mine with two pit operations was used for the simulation and animation model. The simulation model includes the animation of the operation. Animation is helpful to enhance the benefit of a mine simulation model. GPSS/Hòand Proof Professionalòwere the software used for the investigation.

Lead-free piezoceramics based on the(Ba,Ca)(Zr,Ti)O3(BCZT) system exhibit excellent electromechanical properties for low-temperature actuation applications, but suffer from relatively high processing temperatures. Here we demonstrate an approach for the reduction of the sintering temperature and simultaneous increase of the electromechanical strain response of(Ba,Ca)(Zr,Ti)O3 piezoceramics by aliovalent doping with Ce. The samples were prepared by solid state synthesis and their crystallographic structure, dielectric, ferroelectric, and electromechanical properties were investigated. The highest d33* value of 1189 pm/V was obtained for the sample with 0.05 mol% Ce, substituted on the A-site of the perovskite lattice. The results indicate a large potential of these materials for off-resonance piezoelectric actuators.
