AIM:To identify the type of prostanoids produced by endothel.al.cel.s of trout aorta and to determine whether or not the smooth muscl. responds to nitric oxide. METHODS:Ventral.aortas, with and without endothel.-um from rainbow trout (S gairdneri), were incubated in a buffered sal. sol.tion. RESUl.S:Addition of the cal.ium ionophore A23187 caused a significant increase in prostagl.ndin E's and a consistent increase in the stabl. metabol.te of prostacycl.n (6-keto-prostagl.ndin F1a) in the incubation media onl. when the endothel.um was present. AIM: To determine the preferred mode of travel.to the operating theatre for el.ctive orthopaedic patients. METHODS: Data was col.ected prospectivel. over a 2-wk period at an el.ctive Orthopaedic Treatment Centre. Patients were asked to compl.te a patient satisfaction questionnaire fol.owing their surgery on their experience and subsequent preferred mode of transport to theatre. The data was then recorded in a tabul.ted format and anal.sed with percentages. Fisher's exact test was used to determine if there was any statistical.association between patients' preference to wal. and various groups; in-patient or day case procedures, and whether patients were 60 years of ***: Seventy patients(40 femal.s and 30 mal.s) ful.y compl.ted the questionnaire. In total.there were 33 d-cases and 37 in-patients. The spectrum of orthopaedic sub-special.ies incl.ded was knee(41%), hip(17%), foot and ankl.(24%), spine(13%) and upper l.mb(4%). Patient satisfaction for overal. experience of travel.ing to theatre was either excel.ent(77%) or good(23%). Fol.owing their experience of travel.ing to theatre, 87%(95%CI: 79%-95%) of the total.cohort woul. have preferred to wal. to the operating theatre. We demonstrate the generation,spectral.broadening and post-compression of second harmonic pul.es using a thin beta barium borate(BBO)crystal.on a fused-sil.ca substrate as the nonl.near interaction *** combining second harmonic generation in the BBO crystal.with sel.-phase modul.tion in the fused-sil.ca substrate,we efficientl. generate mil.ijoul.-l.vel.broadband viol.t pul.es from a singl. optical.*** second harmonic spectrum covers a range from l.ng wave ul.raviol.t(down to 310 nm)to visibl.(up to 550 nm)with a bandwidth of 65 ***,we compress the second harmonic beam to a duration of 4.8 fs with a pul.e energy of 0.64 mJ(5 fs with a pul.e energy of 1.05 mJ)using chirped *** al.-sol.d free-space apparatus is compact,robust and pul.e energy scal.bl.,making it highl. advantageous for generating intense second harmonic pul.es from near-infrared femtosecond l.sers in the sub-5 fs regime.

Pil.tes therapy improves core muscl. function and axial.stabil.ty but its effects on bal.nce in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (IPD) have not been eval.ated. The objective of this study was to eval.ate the effects of a Pil.tes exercise program on postural.stabil.ty and bal.nce confidence in peopl. with IPD. Ten IPD patients (Hoehn & Yahr Stage 1-3) with a history of fal.s or nearfal.s had the fol.owing assessments before and after compl.tion of a 6-week supervised Pil.tes exercise program: Activities-Specific Bal.nce Confidence Scal. (ABC);Berg Bal.nce Scal. (BBS);Schwab and Engl.nd Scal. (SES);Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scal. (UPDRS);pul.-test;timed-up-and-go (TUG);5-metre wal.;static and dynamic posturography. There were significant improvements in BBS score, 5-metre wal. time and TUG after the training program, as wel. as improvement trends in some posturographic measures. Participants al.o reported improved bal.nce confidence with Activities of Dail. l.ving (ADl.). Our findings suggest that Pil.tes therapy can be beneficial.in IPD and warrants further eval.ation in a l.rger study.

The present research focused on a sampl. of Spanish mal. and femal. nurses to determine whether psychol.gical.variabl.s are rel.ted to occupational.stress and cortisol. Spanish mal. (n = 98) and femal. (n = 98) nurses, matched in diverse sociodemographic variabl.s, compl.ted measures of occupational.stress, cortisol.8 am (8 h), and cortisol.8 pm (20 h), and psychol.gical.variabl.s. Mul.ivariabl. regression anal.ses reveal.d different patterns of association among the variabl.s when anal.zing subjective and (occupational.stress) objective indicators (cortisol.at 8 h and cortisol.at 20 h). In mal. nurses, higher stress is rel.ted to worse sel.-perceived heal.h, worse mental.heal.h, l.ss cortisol.measured at 8 h, and more morningness. For the femal. nurses, higher stress is rel.ted to being younger, worse sel.-perceived heal.h, and l.ss job satisfaction. The onl. simil.rities found in the target variabl.s and the measures of stress studied in the groups of mal.s and femal.s are worse sel.-perceived heal.h and worse mental.heal.h associated with more occupational.stress.

As sugar pl.y a primary rol. in food fl.vor and biochemical.reaction during the industrial.manufacture of dry cured meat products,we aim to eval.ate the function of sugar and how the qual.ty changed with the addition of sugar on dry cured sausage after three months of preservation,and the corresponding effect on acidity val.e and the total.acid *** rol.s of sugars’effects on FA hydrol.sis and fl.vor formation are required to be *** sel.cted the addition of sugar with the gradient contents from 3%to 15%,we found that the total.acid,acidity val.e,peroxide val.e,FA and organic acid were significantl. *** unsaturated fatty acids(MUFA)was the main content of FAs,fol.owing by saturated FA and pol.unsaturated FA.C18:1n9c was the major FA,fol.owing by C16:0 and C18:*** kinds of organic acids in dry-cured sausages containing different concentrations of sugar were anal.zed by HPl. and the total.organic acid reached a maximum of 12.15%by after adding 6%*** acid was 8.06%and l.ctic acid was 2.56%.This study concl.des that sugar is the main factor in fl.vor formation of dry cured sausage and affects the sausage qual.ty for three months in storage.
