Magnetorheological fluid(MRF)sandwich beams belong to a class of adaptive beams that consists of MRF sandwiched between two or more face layers and have a great prospective for use in semi-active control of beam vibrations due to their superior vibration suppression capabilities.The composition of MRF has a strong influence on the MRF properties and hence affects the vibration characteristics of the beam.In this work,six MRF samples(MRFs)composed of combination of two particle sizes and three weight fractions of carbonyl iron pow-der(CIP)were prepared and their viscoelastic properties were measured.The MRFs were used to fabricate different MRF core sandwich beams.Additionally,a sandwich beam with commer-cially available MRF 132DG fluid as core was fabricated.The modal parameters of the cantilever MRF sandwich beams were determined at different magnetic fields.Further,sinusoidal sweep excitation tests were performed on these beams at different magnetic fields to investigate their vibration suppres-sion behavior.MRF having larger particle size and higher weight fraction of CIP resulted in higher damping ratio and vibration suppression.Finally,optimal particle size and weight fraction of CIP were determined based on the maximization of damping ratio and minimization of weight of MRF.

Bulbar urethral ischemic necrosis(BUIN)is an iatrogenic entity resulting from repeated attempts at performing anastomotic urethroplasty for pelvic fracture urethral injuries.Etiologically speaking,BUIN is related to a compromised blood supply of the bulbar urethra,which normally relies on anterograde supply from bulbar arteries and retrograde supply from recurrent branches of dorsal penile arteries,through the glans.At each transection of the bulbar urethra,both the anterograde and retrograde supplies are compromised,increasing the risk of BUIN.Even though this term is widely used among reconstructive urologists,BUIN is orphan of an accepted scientific definition.We aim to report our personal perspective on BUIN,to identify factors associated with its occurrence,and to describe the management options in these patients.

General-motors diet: A quick fix for steatotic live liver donors

Background and aims:GM(General-Motors)diet is a low-calorie 7-day diet plan using complex carbohydrates used for quick weight loss.Dietary optimisation is known to decrease steatosis and improve outcomes in liver donors.We evaluated the efficacy and feasibility of using GM diet in steatotic live liver donors(LLD).Methods:LLDs who either had BMI>30 kg/m^(2),Computerised tomography liver attenuation index(CT-LAI)10%were started on GM diet for 1 week.Records of these LLDs and their recipients were retrieved retrospectively and analysed.Weight,liver function tests(LFT),MR fat-frac-tion,CT-LAI,hospital-stay and complications were analysed in LLDs while early graft dysfunction(EGD)and complications were assessed in recipients.Results:A total of 51 LLDs with mean age of 34.6?9.5 years with baseline mean weight of 80.6±10.8 kg and BMI of 29.1±2.78 kg/m^(2) were started on GM diet.After a week of following the GM diet,there was an average weight loss of 3.46±2.1 kg,a decrease in fat-fraction by 3.8%±2.7,and an improvement in CT-LAI by 6.7?3.7 HU.All patients could successfully undergo donor hepatectomy with an average postoperative ICU stay of 2.86±0.8 days and hospital stay of 6.82?0.81 days.No donor had steatosis>10% on intraoperative Tru-cut biopsy and their post-operative outcomes were similar to normal liver donors.There were intra-abdominal collections in 2 donors requiring drainage and one required re-exploration for intestinal obstruction.There was EGD in 8 recipients(15.6%)and mortality in 1(1.9%)recipients.Conclusion:GM diet is safe and effective regimen to reduce steatosis and increase healthy LLD pool without compromising donor or recipient safety.

Kharsali village, located in the Northwest Himalaya near the confluence of the Yamuna River and Unta Gad, is situated on a thick(>150 m) paleolandslide deposit. The village is continuously being eroded at its base by the two rivers. Cracks are noted in most houses while the ancient Shani Temple lying to the south of the village has tilted ~5° towards the northeast. Three slope sections(S-1, S-2, S-3) were modelled and analysed to determine the displacement and shear strain patterns of the slopes. Based on surface failure conditions, potential slope instability of the Kharsali village was evaluated from 2D Finite Element Method(FEM) using Shear Strain Reduction(SSR) analysis in the Phase2 software. Results indicate a critical Stress Reduction Factor(SRF) of 1.5 for the southern edge of the village(S-1) housing the Shani Temple. The development of failure surfaces at its lower portion signifies the propagating, progressive nature of the slope. The S-2 slope section is most vulnerable to slope failure, with a critical SRF of 1.08. This has been inferred by the formation of failure surfaces with displacements of 0.05-0.08 m. The S-3 section in the northern part of the Kharsali shows highest critical SRF of 2.76. The un-metalled road section in the north of the village near S-3 hasdeveloped a failure surface with displacement of 0.003-0.004 m, and a zone of subsidence. The S-3 section is relatively stable, whereas the S-2 section is the most vulnerable portion of the village.

Upper limb length discrepancy is a rare occurrence. Humerus shortening may need specialized treatment to restore the functional and cosmetic status of upper limb. We report a case of humerus lengthening of 9 cm with a monorail external fixator and the result was observed during a 2-year follow-up. Humerus lengthening needs specialized focus as it is not only a cosmetic issue but also a functional demand. The monorail unilateral fixator is more functional and cosmetically acceptable, and thus becomes an effective treatment option.

This article explores the most recent evidence-based information on ethnomedicinal, phytochemical and pharmacological understanding of Hygrophila auriculata for the treatment of various diseases and health conditions. Various ethnomedicinal writings suggest the use of the plant or its parts for the treatment of jaundice, oedema, gastrointestinal ailments, diarrhoea, dysentery, urinogenital disorder, gall stones, urinary calculi, kidney stone, leucorrhoea, rheumatism, tuberculosis, anaemia, body pain, constipation, skin disease, and as an aphrodisiac. The plant has been reported to contain flavonoids （apigenin, luteolin, ellagic acid, gallic acid and quercetin）, alkaloids （asteracanthine and asteracanthicine）, triterpenes （lupeol, lupenone, hentricontane and betulin）, sterols （stigmasterol and asterol）, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, aliphatic esters and essential oils. Extracts and bioactive compounds from the plant have been found to possess antimicrobial, anthelmintic, antitermite, nephroprotective, hepatoprotective, central nervous system protective, antitumour, antidiabetic, anticataract, antioxidant, haematopoietic, diuretic, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antimotility, aphrodisiac, neuroprotection, anti- endotoxin and anti-urolithiatic activities. For this paper, we reviewed patents, clinical studies, analytical studies and marketed formulations from the earliest found examples from 1887 to the end of 2017.

In tropical countries like India,malaria has been one of the most common parasitic illnesses leading to frequent hospitalization and causing major economic burden among the masses. Although Plasmodium vivax infection is considered to be benign,in contrast to Plasmodium, falciparum infection which is notorious for its severe splenic complications can occur frequently. Splenomegaly tends not to receive special attention,as it is not usually accompanied by any symptoms and can be gradually resolved via standard antimalarial therapy.Splenic infarction, although rarely attributable to malaria in an endemic region with high parasitemia,can be a rare presentation of this disease entity.

Understanding the relationship between the properties and performance of black titanium dioxide with core-shell structure(CSBT)for environmental remediation is crucial for improving its prospects in practical applications.In this study,CSBT was synthesized using a glycerol-assisted sol-gel approach.The effect of different water-to-glycerol ratios(W:G=1:0,9:1,2:1,and 1:1)on the semiconducting and physicochemical properties of CSBT was investigated.The effectiveness of CSBT in removing phenolic compounds(PHCs)from real agro-industrial wastewater was studied.The CSBT synthesized with a W:G ratio of 9:1 has optimized properties for enhanced removal of PHCs.It has a distinct coreshell structure and an appropriate amount of Ti3+cations(11.18%),which play a crucial role in enhancing the performance of CSBT.When exposed to visible light,the CSBT performed better:48.30%of PHCs were removed after 180 min,compared to only 21.95%for TiO_(2) without core-shell structure.The CSBT consumed only 45.5235 kWh/m^(3) of electrical energy per order of magnitude and cost$2.4127 per unit volume of treated agro-industrial wastewater.Under the conditions tested,the CSBT demonstrated exceptional stability and reusability.The CSBT showed promising results in the treatment of phenols-containing agro-industrial wastewater.
