Immediate effect of high-intensity exercise on brain-derived neurotrophic factor in healthy young adults:A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background Although brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)has been identified as a molecular biomarker of the neurophysiological effects induced by exercise,the acute effects of high-intensity exercise(HIE)on BDNF levels are inconclusive.This study aims to estimate the immediate effects of HIE on BDNF levels in healthy young adults.Methods A systematic search was conducted in the MEDLINE,Scopus,Cochrane CENTRAL,and SPORTDiscuss databases up to December 2020.Randomized controlled trials(RCTs)and non-RCTs reporting pre-post changes in serum or plasma BDNF after an acute intervention of HIE compared to a control condition were included.Pooled effect sizes(p-ESs)and 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)were calculated for RCTs using a random effects model with Stata/SE(Version 15.0;StataCorp.,College Station,TX,USA).The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed.PROPERO registration number:CRD42020221047.Results A total of 22 studies with 552 individuals(age range:20-31 years;59.1%male)were included.The meta-analysis included 10 RCTs that reported valid outcome data.Higher BDNF levels were observed when HIE interventions were compared with non-exercise(p-ES=0.55,95%CI:0.12-0.98;I^(2)=25.7%;n=4 studies)and light-intensity exercise(p-ES=0.78,95%CI:0.15-1.40;I^(2)=52.4%;n=3 studies)but not moderate-intensity exercise(p-ES=0.93,95%CI:-0.16 to 2.02;I^(2)=88.5%;n=4 studies)conditions.Conclusion In comparison to non-exercise or light-intensity exercises,an immediate increase in BDNF levels may occur when young adults perform HIE.Given the benefits obtained maximizing circulating BDNF when performing HIE and its potential effects on brain health,our findings suggest that HIE could be recommended by clinicians as a useful exercise strategy to healthy adults.

Background The positive influence of most types of exercise has been reported repeatedly,but what the most effective exercise approaches are for improving health-related quality of life(HRQoL)in people with cancer remains unknown.The aim of this systematic review and network meta-analysis was to synthesize the evidence from intervention studies to assess the effects of different types of exercise on HRQoL during and after cancer treatment.Methods MEDLINE,SPORTDiscus,the Cochrane Library,Web of Science,and Scopus were searched for randomized controlled trials aimed at testing the effects of exercise interventions meant to improve HRQoL in people with cancer.Separate analyses were conducted for HRQoL as measured by general and cancer-specific questionnaires.We also evaluated whether the effects of exercise were different during and after cancer treatment in both the physical and mental HRQoL domains.Results In total,93 studies involving 7435 people with cancer were included.Network effect size estimates comparing exercise intervention vs.usual care were significant for combined exercise(0.35,95%confidence interval(95%CI):0.14–0.56)for HRQoL as measured by general questionnaires,and for combined(0.31,95%CI:0.13–0.48),mind–body exercise(0.54,95%CI:0.18–0.89),and walking(0.39,95%CI:0.04–0.74)for HRQoL as measured by cancer-specific questionnaires.Conclusion Exercise programs combining aerobic and resistance training can be recommended to improve HRQoL during and after cancer treatment.The scarcity and heterogeneity of these studies prevents us from making recommendations about other exercise modalities due to insufficient evidence.

Pathological and therapeutic effects of extracellular vesicles in neurological and neurodegenerative diseases

Extracellular vesicles are released by all cell types and contain proteins,microRNAs,mRNAs,and other bioactive molecules.Extracellular vesicles play an important role in intercellular communication and in the modulation of the immune system and neuroinflammation.The cargo of extra cellular vesicles(e.g.,proteins and microRNAs)is altered in pathological situations.Extracellular vesicles contribute to the pathogenesis of many pathologies associated with sustained inflammation and neuroinflammation,including cance r,diabetes,hype rammonemia and hepatic encephalopathy,and other neurological and neurodegenerative diseases.Extracellular vesicles may cross the blood-brain barrier and transfer pathological signals from the periphery to the brain.This contributes to inducing neuroinflammation and cognitive and motor impairment in hyperammonemia and hepatic encephalopathy and in neurodegenerative diseases.The mechanisms involved are beginning to be unde rstood.For example,increased tumor necrosis factor a in extracellular vesicles from plasma of hype rammonemic rats induces neuroinflammation and motor impairment when injected into normal rats.Identifying the mechanisms by which extracellular vesicles contribute to the pathogenesis of these diseases will help to develop new treatments and diagnostic tools for their easy and early detection.In contrast,extra cellular vesicles from mesenchymal stem cells have therapeutic utility in many of the above pathologies,by reducing inflammation and neuroinflammation and improving cognitive and motor function.These extra cellular vesicles recapitulate the beneficial effects of mesenchymal stem cells and have advantages as therapeutic tools:they are less immunoge nic,may not diffe rentiate to malignant cells,cross the blood-brain barrier,and may reach more easily target organs.Extracellular vesicles from mesenchymal stem cells have beneficial effects in models of ischemic brain injury,Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases,hyperammonemia,and hepatic encephalopathy.Extracellular vesicles f

Wireless medical sensors typically utilize electromagnetic coupling or ultrasound for energy transfer and sensor interrogation.Energy transfer and management is a complex aspect that often limits the applicability of implantable sensor systems.In this work,we report a new passive temperature sensing scheme based on an acoustic metamaterial made of silicon embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane matrix.Compared to other approaches,this concept is implemented without additional electrical components in situ or the need for a customized receiving unit.A standard ultrasonic transducer is used for this demonstration to directly excite and collect the reflected signal.The metamaterial resonates at a frequency close to a typical medical value(5 MHz)and exhibits a high-quality factor.Combining the design features of the metamaterial with the high-temperature sensitivity of the polydimethylsiloxane matrix,we achieve a temperature resolution of 30 mK.This value is below the current standard resolution required in infrared thermometry for monitoring postoperative complications(0.1 K).We fabricated,simulated,in vitro tested,and compared three acoustic sensor designs in the 29-43℃(~302-316 K)temperature range.With this concept,we demonstrate how our passive metamaterial sensor can open the way toward new zero-power smart medical implant concepts based on acoustic interrogation.

Efficient removal of the recalcitrant metamizole contaminant from drinking water by using a CaLaCoO_(9) perovskite supported on recycled polyethylene

Metamizole(MZ)is a widely used anti-inflammatory drug.Due to its common use,this contaminant is found in sewage and rivers.In order to reduce the contamination produced by the MZ,we fabricated in this work a photocatalytic composite using recycled polyethylene(RPE)and the CaLaCoO_(9)(LCCO)perovskite.Those nanoparticles had a microplate-like morphology and sizes of 1.4–5.5μm according to the analysis of microscopy.The photocatalytic properties of the LCCO powders were evaluated under ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)irradiation and found a removal efficiency of 96%.When the RPE+LCCO composite was employed for the photocatalytic degradation of MZ,a maximum degradation of 92.5%was obtained.The influence of the pH on the photocatalytic activity was also studied and found that an initial pH=3 produced a total degradation of MZ after 240 min of UV-Vis irradiation.Moreover,three reuse cycles were carried out for the pure LCCO powders and for the RPE+LCCO composites and found that the maximum loss of degradation was 5%.Furthermore,scavenger experiments demonstrated that the super oxide and hydroxyl radicals are formed during the photocatalytic reaction and were responsible for the degradation of MZ.Additionally,the X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy and Raman analysis demonstrated the formation of defects(oxygen vacancies),those ones delayed the electron-hole recombination,which in turn,enhanced the degradation of the MZ.Thus,the studies performed in this work proved that composites made with recycled plastics and LCCO perovskites are a low-cost and feasible alternative for the cleaning of water sources polluted with pharmaceutical compounds.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of Chagas disease.This flagellated protozoan is transmitted to humans as well as different species of domestic and wild animals via vectors from the Reduviidae family(known as"kissing bugs").Despite the fact that hundreds of species of wild mammals are part of the reservoir system,the morphologi-cal changes and clinical manifestations resulting from the pathogenesis of the infection have been largely neglected.The aim of this review is to systematically compile the available information regarding clinicopathological altera-tions in wild mammals due to natural infection by T.cruzi.Information was obtained from six online bibliographic data search platforms,resulting in the identification of 29 publications that met the inclusion criteria.Mortality was the most common clinical manifestation,cardiac damage was the main finding at necropsy,and lymphoplas-macytic inflammation was the most frequent microscopic injury.Thus,regardless of its role as a reservoir,T.cruzi has the potential to affect the health status of wild mammals,a situation that highlights the need for further research to analyze,measure,and compare its effects at both the individual and population levels.

Background Pediatric cancer survivors are at increased risk of muscle weakness and low areal bone mineral density(aBMD).However,the prevalence of muscle strength deficits is not well documented,and the associations of muscle strength with aBMD are unknown in this population.Therefore,this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of upper-and lower-body muscle strength deficits and to examine the associations of upper-and lower-body muscle strength with age-,sex,and race-specific aBMD Z-scores at the total body,total hip,femoral neck,and lumbar spine.Methods This cross-sectional study included 116 pediatric cancer survivors(12.1±3.3 years old,mean±SD;42.2%female).Upper-and lower-body muscle strength were assessed by handgrip and standing long jump test,respectively.Dual‑energy X‑ray absorptiometry was used to measure aBMD(g/cm2).Associations between muscle strength and aBMD were evaluated in multivariable linear regression models.Logistic regression was used to evaluate the contribution of muscle strength(1-decile lower)to the odds of having low aBMD(Z-score≤1.0).All analyses were adjusted for time from treatment completion,radiotherapy exposure,and body mass index.Results More than one-half of survivors were within the 2 lowest deciles for upper-(56.9%)and lower-body muscle strength(60.0%)in comparison to age-and sex-specific reference values.Muscle strength deficits were associated with lower aBMD Z-scores at all sites(B=0.133–0.258,p=0.001–0.032).Each 1-decile lower in upper-body muscle strength was associated with 30%–95%higher odds of having low aBMD Z-scores at all sites.Each 1-decile lower in lower-body muscle strength was associated with 35%–70%higher odds of having low aBMD Z-scores at total body,total hip,and femoral neck.Conclusion Muscle strength deficits are prevalent in young pediatric cancer survivors,and such deficits are associated with lower aBMD Z-scores at all sites.These results suggest that interventions designed to improve muscle strength in this vulnerable population may have the added ben

Maize stalk rot reduces grain yield and quality.Information about the genetics of resistance to maize stalk rot could help breeders design effective breeding strategies for the trait.Genomic prediction may be a more effective breeding strategy for stalk-rot resistance than marker-assisted selection.We performed a genome-wide association study(GWAS)and genomic prediction of resistance in testcross hybrids of 677 inbred lines from the Tuxpe?o and non-Tuxpe?o heterotic pools grown in three environments and genotyped with 200,681 single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs).Eighteen SNPs associated with stalk rot shared genomic regions with gene families previously associated with plant biotic and abiotic responses.More favorable SNP haplotypes traced to tropical than to temperate progenitors of the inbred lines.Incorporating genotype-by-environment(G×E)interaction increased genomic prediction accuracy.

Background:Inbreeding depression can adversely affect traits related to fitness,reproduction and productive performance.Although current research suggests that inbreeding levels are generally low in most goat breeds,the impact of inbreeding depression on phenotypes of economic interest has only been investigated in a few studies based on genealogical data.Results:We genotyped 1040 goats with the Goat SNP50 BeadChip.This information was used to estimate different molecular inbreeding coefficients and characterise runs of homozygosity and homozygosity patterns.We detected38 genomic regions with increased homozygosity as well as 8 ROH hotspots mapping to chromosomes 1,2,4,6,14,16 and 17.Eight hundred seventeen goats with available records for dairy traits were analysed to evaluate the potential consequences of inbreeding depression on milk phenotypes.Four regions on chromosomes 8 and 25were significantly associated with inbreeding depression for the natural logarithm of the somatic cell count.Notably,these regions contain several genes related with immunity,such as SYK,IL27,CCL19 and CCL21.Moreover,one region on chromosome 2 was significantly associated with inbreeding depression for milk yield.Conclusions:Although genomic inbreeding levels are low in Murciano-Granadina goats,significant evidence of inbreeding depression for the logarithm of the somatic cell count,a phenotype closely associated with udder health and milk yield,have been detected in this population.Minimising inbreeding would be expected to augment economic gain by increasing milk yield and reducing the incidence of mastitis,which is one of the main causes of dairy goat culling.
