Magnesium activation affects the properties and phosphate sorption capacity of poultry litter biochar

Biochars with a high affinity for phosphorus(P)are promising soil amendments for reducing P in agricultural *** litter(PL)is an abundant biochar ***,PL-derived biochars are typically high in soluble P and therefore require chemical modification to become effective P *** study investigated the effect of magnesium(Mg)activation on extractable P(EP)and P sorption capacities of PL-derived *** was produced at 500-900℃ from PL activated with 0-1 M *** differentially aged PL feedstocks were evaluated(1-,3-5-,and 7-9-year-old).Increased Mg activation level and pyrolysis temperature both resulted in EP reductions from the ***,biochars produced at temperatures≥700℃ from PL activated with≥0.25 M Mg had negligible EP.X-ray diffractograms indicated that increased Mg loading favored the formation of stable Mg_(3)(PO_(4))_(2) phases while increasing temperature favored the formation of both Mg_(3)(PO_(4))_(2) and Ca_(5)(PO_(4))_(3)*** P sorption capacities(Pmax)of the biochars were estimated by fitting Langmuir isotherms to batch sorption data and ranged from 0.66-10.35 mg g^(−1).Average Pmax values were not affected by PL age or pyrolysis temperature;however,biochars produced from 1 M Mg-activated PL did have significantly higher average Pmax values(p<0.05),likely due to a greater abundance of ***,the results demonstrated that Mg activation is an effective strategy for producing PLderived biochars with the potential ability to reduce P loading into environmentally sensitive ecosystems.

BACKGROUND Despite significant technical and training improvements, the incidence of postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) pancreatitis(PEP) has not significantly dropped. Although many studies have evaluated the efficacy of various agents, e.g. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, octreotide,antioxidants, administered via various dosages, routes(oral, intrarectal or parenteral), and schedules(before or after the procedure), the results have been *** To evaluate efficacy of three pharmacologic prophylactic methods for prevention of *** In this prospective, single-center randomized trial, patients who underwent firsttime ERCP for choledocholithiasis were randomly assigned to three groups. The first group received 600 mg N-acetylcysteine 15 min prior to ERCP, and perrectum administration of 50 mg indomethacin both prior to and after completion of the ERCP. The second group was administered only the 50 mg indomethacin per-rectum both prior to and after the ERCP. The third group was administeredper-rectum 100 mg indomethacin only after the ERCP, representing the control group given the guideline-recommended regimen. The primary end-point was PEP *** Among the total 211 patients evaluated during the study, 186 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and completed the protocol. The percentages of patients who developed PEP in each of the three groups were not significantly different(χ2 =2.793, P = 0.247). Among the acute PEP cases, for all groups, 14 patients developed mild pancreatitis(77.77%) and 4 moderate. No severe cases of PEP occurred, and in all PEP cases the resolution was favorable. FOLFIRINOX and translational studies: Towards personalized therapy in pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is an extremely aggressive disease; although progress has been made in the last few years, the prognosis of these patients remains dismal. FOLFIRINOX is now considered a standard treatment in first-line setting, since it demonstrated an improved overall and progression-free survival vs gemcitabine alone. However, the enthusiasm over the benefit of this three-drug regimen is tempered by the associated increased toxicity profile, and many efforts have been made to improve the feasibility of this schedule. After a more recent phase Ⅲ trial showing an improved outcome over gemcitabine, the combination of gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel emerged as another standard first-line treatment. However, this treatment is also associated with more side effects. In addition, despite initial promising data on the predictive role of SPARClevels, recent studies showed that these levels are not associated with nab-paclitaxel efficacy. The choice to use this treatment over FOLFIRINOX is therefore a topic of debate, also because no validated biomarkers to guide FOLFIRINOX treatment are available. In the era of actionable mutations and target agents it would be desirable to identify molecular factors or biomarkers to predict response to therapy in order to maximize the efficacy of treatment and avoid useless toxic effects for non-responding patients. However, until today the milestone of treatment for pancreatic cancer remains chemotherapy combinations, without predictive or monitoring tools existing to optimize therapy. This review analyzes the state-of-the-art treatments, promises and limitations of targeted therapies, ongoing trials and future perspectives, including potential role of microR NAs as predictive biomarkers.

BACKGROUND Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)is a leading cause of death from cancer *** markers like carbohydrate antigen 19-9(CA 19-9)have been proven valuable as a diagnostic tool and a predictor for tumor staging and response to *** To delineate the phenotype of normal CA 19-9 PDAC according to clinical features,disease staging and prognosis as compared with high CA 19-9 PDAC *** We performed a retrospective single-center analysis of all PDAC cases admitted in our Gastroenterology department over a period of 30 mo that were diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue *** were divided into two groups according to CA 19-9 levels over a threshold of 37 U/*** performed a comparison between the two groups with regard to demographic and clinical data,biomarkers,tumor staging and 6-mo *** Altogether 111 patients were recruited with 29 having documented normal CA 19-9(<37 U/mL).In the CA 19-9 negative group of patients,20.68%had elevated levels of both CEA and CA 125,13.79%for CA 125 only whilst 17.24%for CEA *** two groups had similar demographic *** pain was more frequently reported in positive vs negative CA 19-9 PDAC cases(76.83%vs 55.17%),while smoking was slightly more prevalent in the latter group(28.04%vs 31.03%).Tumors over 2 cm were more frequently seen in the positive CA 19-9 group,reflecting a higher proportion of locally advanced and metastatic neoplasia(87.7%vs 79.3%).Sixmonth survival was higher for the negative CA 19-9 group(58.62%vs 47.56%).CONCLUSION Elevated CA 19-9 at diagnosis seems to be associated with a more pronounced symptomatology,high tumor burden and poor prognosis compared to negative CA 19-9 PDAC *** and CA 125 can be adjunctive useful markers for PDAC,especially in CA 19-9 negative cases.

Physical blends containing macromolecular compounds and low molecular weight liquid crystals (LCs) have important applications. LCs are used as reinforcements for amorphous polymers or in display devices. The addition of LCs to amorphous polymers determines improvements in the mechanical properties of polymeric composites. Due to their mechanical anisotropy, which results from molecular alignment, the LC molecules may orient themselves in the shear field of a processing operation. Upon cooling, this orientation may impart to the composites some improvements in the mechanical properties similar with that found with fibrous reinforcements, but with the advantage that the additive acts also as a plasticizer. The glass transition temperature and the viscosity of the blend are lower than those of the starting polymer.
