Numerical modeling of adhesion and adhesive failure during unidirectional contact between metallic surfaces

In this work, we developed a finite element modeling approach to study adhesion during unidirectional contact between a two-dimensional plane-strain square and a flat slab. The surfaces were metallic or ceramic, and we analyzed different pairs of materials and their adhesion intensity using a FORTRAN subroutine (dLOAd) connected to a commercial finite element code Abaqus, which provided the surface attractive forces based on the Lennard-Jones interatomic potential using Hamaker constants. We considered adhesive loads during both the approach and separation of the surfaces. during the separation step, we modeled the material transfer between surfaces due to adhesion with respect to damage initiation and propagation at the flat slab. The parameters considered in the simulations include normal load, chemical affinity, and system size, and we analyzed different conditions by comparing the interaction forces during approach and withdrawal. This work also presents: (i) a description of the evolution of energy dissipation due to adhesion hysteresis, (ii) the formation–growth–breakage process of the adhesive junctions and the material transfer between surfaces, and (iii) an adhesive wear map based on a proposed novel equation that correlates the material parameters and material loss due to adhesion. The results indicate that the chemical affinity between bodies in contact is more related to adhesion than the applied load. In addition, the ratio between the material strength and elastic modulus seems to be an important factor in reducing adhesive wear.

The state of Cameroon, faced with the situation the electricity deficits, is promoting the development of renewable energies in general and to meet rural electrification needs in particular. The purpose of this work is to study the feasibility of the MHP of Batcheu, to show its contribution to sustainable development in this locality and to prove that it is a profitable project. After study, it appears that the waterfall of Batcheu is favourable to the establishment of a MHP with an installed power of 260 kW with an operating diagram corresponding to a Francis turbine. Given that it is a renewable energy that can supply more than 800 households in rural areas, its contribution to sustainable development is obvious. Its investment cost is estimated at 171,465,396 FCFA. It is a profitable project with a payback time of 7 years and 2 months.

Loss or gain of chromosomes,a condition known as aneuploidy,is a common feature of tumor cells and has therefore been proposed as the driving force for *** chromosomal instability can arise during mitosis as a result of mis-segregation of the duplicated sister chromatids to the two daughter *** normal cells,missegregation is usually prevented by the spindle assembly checkpoint(SAC),a sophisticated surveillance mechanism that inhibits mitotic exit until all chromosomes have successfully achieved bipolar attachment to spindle *** abrogation of SAC activity is lethal to normal as well as to tumor cells,as a consequence of massive chromosome ***,many human aneuploid tumor cells exhibit a weakened SAC activity that allows them to tolerate gains or losses of a small number of chromosomes;and interfering with this SAC residual activity may constitute a suitable strategy to kill cancer *** review focuses on the potential link between SAC and tumorigenesis,and the therapeutic strategy to target the SAC for cancer treatment.

Tracheal Intubation difficulties: Systematic Literature Review

Background: Tracheal intubation is a common procedure in medical practice, being performed mainly in surgical centers and emergencies in trauma patients. Objective: This systematic literature review aims to understand the main difficulties and complications related to tracheal intubation. Methods: Systematic literature review, conducted in the Virtual Health Library databases between 2016 and 2021, restricted to articles in English and Portuguese with the descriptors: Airway, difficult intubation, and Complications. After reading the abstracts, 34 articles were found, and, after reading them, 9 articles were selected. Results: This review analyzed 9 scientific studies that rigorously met the previously established characteristics in the sample selection. The synthesis included the following aspects (author/year of publication, article title, objective, type of study, and database. discussion: Several factors that influence the success of intubation were identified, such as technical, professional, and patient issues. In addition, measures to minimize the risks involving the procedure were highlighted. Conclusion: Tracheal intubation is a common procedure in surgical centers and emergencies. However, its risks, while low, should not be ignored. Unsuccessful procedures can occur and have consequences for the patient, such as trauma to the upper airway.

AIM: To analyze the polygraphic sleep patterns during cirrhosis progression in a rat model by repeated CCl4 administration. METHOdS: Male Wistar rats received three weekly injections of CCl4 for 11 wk, and were analyzed before and during the induction of cirrhosis. Rats were implanted with electrodes to record their sleep patterns. Polygraph recordings were made weekly over 11 wk for 8 h, during the light period. After a basal recording, rats received three weekly injections of CCl4. Histological conf irmation of cirrhosis was performed after 11 ***: The results showed a progressive decrease in total wake time that reached statistical signif icance from the second week of treatment. In addition, there was an increase in total time of slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep) in most of the 11 wk. SWS showed no signif icant *** the final weeks, a significant increase in REM sleep frequency was also observed. Histological analyses of the livers showed unequivocal signs of cirrhosis. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that hepatic failure produced by CCl4 administration is capable of modifying the sleep pattern even after only a few doses.
