Biological modalities for treatment of acute spinal cord injury： a pilot study and review of the literature

Objective： Paraplegia due to traumatic spinal cord injuries is one of the devastating effects of dorsolumbar vertebral fractures. Treatment modalities for such fractures, such as stabilization, have no effect on the neurological recovery. Thus, various pharmacological and biological treatment modalities have been used. The more recent trend of using autologous stem cells from the iliac crest has been used in some clinical trials with varying success. Thus, more clinical studies are required to study the effect of this novel approach Methods： This is a prospective hospital-based cohort study （level IV）. The study was conducted in the Dept. of Orthopaedics, University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital, Delhi from November 2010 to March 2012. Ten patients who had sustained traumatic dorsolumbar vertebral fractures with complete paraplegia were recruited for this study. Under suitable anaesthesia, at the beginning of surgery, 100 ml of bone marrow was aspirated. This was centrifuged and buffy coat isolated and then transferred into a sterile tube and sent to the operating room on ice packs. After surgical decompression and stabilization, the buffy coat isolate was injected into the dural sleeve at the site of the injury using a 21G needle. All the patients were evaluated for neurological improvement using the American Spinal Injury Association （ASIA） score and Frankel grade at 6 weeks and 3 months postoperatively. Results： The evaluation at 6 weeks showed some improvement in terms of the ASIA scores in 2 patients but no improvements in their Frankel Grade. The other 8 patients showed no improvements in their ASIA scores or their Frankel Grades. The current pilot study has shown that there has been no improvement in most of the recipients of the transplant （n=8）. Some patients （n=2） who did show some improvement in their sensory scores proved to be of no significant functional value as depicted by no change in their Frankel Grades. Conclusion： The outcome o

Photo-irradiation of 2-（5-methylthiophen-2-yl）-3-[（naphthalen-2-yl）methoxy]-4H-chromen-4-ones yielded the fascinating angular tetracyclic products via cyclization involving both 2-thienyl ring and naphthylmethoxy group via 1,4-biradical generated in the Norrish type-II process. The stereochemical dispositions of the products were determined by MM2 energy minimized programme and spectroscopic analysis.

China's Economic Growth:International Spillovers

China＇s economic development since 1978 is one of the most significant events in recent history. Many aspects of this development have been extensively analyzed in the published literature. However, the implications of China ＇s growth for other countries have been relatively neglected. The present paper attempts to fill this gap in the literature. The paper first presents some facts on China＇s role in the world economy, and then measures the impact of China＇s growth on growth in the rest of the world in both the short term and the long term. Short-run estimates based on vector autoregression and error correction models suggest that spillover effects of China＇s growth have increased in recent decades, Long- term spillover effects, estimated through growth regressions based on panel data, are also significant and have extended in recent decades beyond Asia. The estimates are robust to the effects of global and regional shocks, changes in model specification, and sample period.

Handmade cloning （HMC） is the most awaited, simple and micromanipulator-ffee version of somatic cell nuclear transfer （SCNT）. The requirement of expensive micromanipulators and skilled expertise is eliminated in this technique, proving it as a major revolution in the field of embryology. During the past years, many modifications have been incorporated in this technique to boost its efficiency. This alternative approach to micromanipulator based traditional cloning O-C） works wonder in generating comparable or even higher birth rates in addition to declining costs drastically and enabling cryopreservation. This technique is not only applicable to intraspecies nuclear transfer but also to interspecies nuclear transfer （iSCNT） thus permitting conservation of endangered species. It also offers unique possibilities for automation of SCNT which aims at production of transgenic animals that can cure certain human diseases by producing therapeutics hence, providing a healthier future for the wellbeing of humans. The present review aims at highlighting certain aspects of HMC including recent advancements in procedure and factors involved in elevating its efficiency besides covering the potentials and pitfalls of this technique

Risk factors and clinical implication of superimposed Campylobacter jejuni infection in patients with underlying ulcerative colitis

Background and aims:Superimposed Campylobacter jejuni infection(CJI)has been described in patients with ulcerative colitis(UC).Its risk factors and impact on the disease course of UC are not *** aims were to evaluate the risk factors for CJI in UC patients and the impact of the bacterial infection on outcomes of ***:Out of a total of 918 UC patients tested,21(2.3%)of patients were found to be positive for CJI(the study group).The control group comprised 84 age-matched UC patients who had tested negative for *** factors for CJI and UC-related outcomes at 1 year after diagnosis of CJI were compared between the two ***:Ten patients(47.6%)with CJI required hospital admission at the time of diagnosis,including eight for the management of“UC flare”.Treatment with antibiotics resulted in improvement in symptoms in 13 patients(61.9%).On multivariate analysis,hospital admission in the preceding year was found to be an independent risk factor for CJI[odds ratio(OR):3.9;95%confidence interval(CI):1.1–14.1]and there was a trend for chronic liver disease as a strong risk factor(OR:5.0;95%CI:0.9–28.3).At 1-year follow up,there was a trend for higher rates of UC-related colectomy(28.8% vs.14.3%;P=0.11),and mortality(9.5%vs.1.2%;P=0.096)in the study ***:Recent hospitalization within 1 year was found to be associated with increased risk for CJI in UC *** was a trend for worse clinical outcomes of UC with in patients with superimposed CJI,which was frequently associated with UC flare requiring hospital admission.

Objective:Our aim was to assess the risk factors for non-surgery-related portal and mesenteric vein thrombosis(PMVT)and its impact on the outcomes of inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD).Methods:All patients with a concurrent diagnosis of IBD and PMVT between January 2004 and October 2013 were identified from the electronic medical record(study group;n=20).Patients were matched for age,sex,and IBD phenotype with control IBD patients who had no PMVT,with a ratio of 1:3(control group;n=60).Risk factors for PMVT and IBD-related outcomes at one year after diagnosis of PMVT were compared between the two ***:Of the 20 patients in the Study group,6(30%)had UC,14(70%)had CD and 11(55%)were *** multivariable analysis,inpatient status(odds ratio[OR]6.88;95%confidence interval[CI]1.88-25.12)and baseline corticosteroid use(OR 4.39;95%CI 1.27-15.19)were found to be independent risk factors for the development of *** one-year follow-up,PMVT patients were more likely to have an adverse outcome of IBD,including subsequent emergency room visit(26.3%vs.1.7%;P=0.003),hospitalization for medical management(60.0%vs.20.0%;P=0.001)or IBD-related surgery(65.0%vs.26.7%;P=0.003)than the non-PMVT *** multivariable analysis,PMVT(OR 5.19;95%CI 1.07-25.28)and inpatient status(OR 8.92;95%CI 1.33-59.84)were found to be independent risk factors for poor outcome,whereas baseline immunomodulator use(OR 0.07;95%CI 0.01-0.51)was found to be a protective ***:IBD patients who were inpatients or receiving corticosteroid therapy had an increased risk of the development of *** presence of PMVT was associated with poor clinical outcomes in IBD.

Topological on-chip photonics based on tailored photonic crystals(PhCs)that emulate quantum valley-Hall effeas has recently gained widespread interest owing to its promise of robust unidirectional transport of classical and quantum *** present a direct quantitative evaluation of topological photonic edge eigenstates and their transport properties in the telecom wavelength range using phase-resolved near-field optical *** visualizing the detailed sub-wavelength structure of these modes propagating along the interface between two topologically non-trivial mirror-symmetric lattices allows us to map their dispersion relation and differentiate between the contributions of several higher-order Bloch *** probing of forward-and backward-propagating modes as defined by their phase velocities enables direct quantification of topological *** near-field propagation in controlled defects allows us to extract upper limits of topological protection in on-chip photonic systems in comparison with conventional PhC *** find that protected edge states are two orders of magnitude more robust than modes of conventional PhC *** direct experimental quantification of topological robustness comprises a crucial step toward the application of topologically protected guiding in integrated photonics,allowing for unprecedented error-free photonic quantum networks。

Gamma Correction for Brightness Preservation in Natural Images

Based on studies over the last several decades,the self-renewing skeletal lineages derived from bone marrow stroma could be an ideal source for skeletal tissue ***,the markers for osteogenic precursors;i.e.,bone marrow-derived skeletal stem cells(SSCs),in association with other cells of the marrow stroma(bone marrow stromal cells,BMSCs)and their heterogeneous nature both in vivo and in vitro remain to be *** review aims to highlight:i)the importance of distinguishing BMSCs/SSCs from other“mesenchymal stem/stromal cells”,and ii)factors that are responsible for their heterogeneity,and how these factors impact on the differentiation potential of SSCs towards *** prospective role of SSC enrichment,their expansion and its impact on SSC phenotype is *** has also been given to emerging single cell RNA sequencing approaches in scrutinizing the unique population of SSCs within the BMSC population,along with their committed *** the factors involved in heterogeneity may help researchers to improvise their strategies to isolate,characterize and adopt best culture practices and source identification to develop standard operating protocols for developing reproducible stem cells ***,more scientific understanding of the molecular basis of heterogeneity is warranted that may be obtained from the robust high-throughput functional transcriptomics of single cells or clonal populations.
