Background:Data on epidem.ology, costs, and outcom.s of burn-related injuries presenting at em.rgency departm.nts (EDs) are scarce. To obtain such inform.tion, a questionnaire study with an adequate response rate is im.erative. There is evidence that optim.zed strategies can increase patient participation. However, it is unclear whether this applies to burn patients in an ED setting. The objective of this feasibility study was to optim.ze and evaluate patient recruitm.nt strategy and follow-up m.thods in patients with burn injuries presenting at EDs. m.thods:In a prospective cohort study with a 6-m.nth follow-up, patients with burn-related injuries attending two large EDs during a 3-m.nth study period were included. Eligible patients were quasi-random.y allocated to a standard or optim.zed recruitm.nt strategy by week of the ED visit. The standard recruitm.nt strategy consisted of an invitation letter to participate, an inform.d consent form. a questionnaire, and a franked return envelope. The optim.zed recruitm.nt strategy was com.lem.nted by a stam.ed returned envelope, m.netary incentive, sending a second copy of the questionnaire, and a rem.nder by telephone in non-responders. Response rates were calculated, and questionnaires were used to assess treatm.nt, costs, and health-related quality of life. Results:A total of 87 patients were included of which 85 were eligible for the follow-up study. There was a higher response rate at 2 m.nths in the optim.zed versus the standard recruitm.nt strategy (43.6%vs. 20.0%;OR=3.1 (95%CI 1.1–8.8)), although overall response is low. Non-response analyses showed no significant differences in patient, burn injury or treatm.nt characteristics between responders versus non-responders. Conclusions:This study dem.nstrated that response rates can be increased with an optim.zed, but m.re labor-intensive recruitm.nt strategy, although further optim.zation of recruitm.nt and follow-up is needed. Bone m.ss is im.ortant for dental im.lant success and is regulated by m.chanoresponsive osteocytes. We aim.d to investigate the relationship between the levels and orientation of tensile strain and m.rphology and orientation of osteocytes at different dental im.lant positions in the m.xillary bone. Bone biopsies were retrieved from.eight patients who underwent m.xillary sinus-floor elevation with β-tricalcium.phosphate prior to im.lant placem.nt. Gap versus free-ending locations were com.ared using 1) a three-dim.nsional finite-elem.nt m.del of the m.xilla to predict the tensile strain m.gnitude and direction and 2) histology and histom.rphom.tric analyses. The finite-elem.nt m.del predicted larger, differently directed tensile strains in the gap versus freeending locations. The m.an percentage of m.neralised residual native-tissue volum., osteocyte num.er(m.an ± standard deviations:97 ± 40/region-of-interest), and osteocyte shape(90% elongated,10% round) were sim.lar for both locations. However, the osteocyte surface area was 1.5-tim.s larger in the gap than in the free-ending locations, and the elongated osteocytes in these locations were m.re cranially caudally oriented. In conclusion, significant differences in the osteocyte surface area and orientation seem.to exist locally in the m.xillary bone, which m.y be related to the tensile strain m.gnitude and orientation. This m.ght reflect local differences in the osteocyte m.chanosensitivity and bone quality, suggesting differences in dental im.lant success based on the location in the m.xilla.

Laser cladding is perform.d to im.rove the surface properties of m.tallic m.chine com.onents. Extensive work is being conducted to investigate the relationships am.ng the cladding param.ters, clad powder characteristics and the quality of the clad layer. This work presents som. of the m.tallographic analyses results of WC -Ni and WC-Co clad layers. The clad layers are characterised with non-uniform.carbide particles, m.stly WC im.edded in a m.re ductile m.trix. The transition from.the clad layer to the substrate m.tal had a distinct dilution zone. The ratio of this zone to the clad height was in the range of 10 -12% and this still needs to be refined.

The in situ physicochem.cal analysis of nanostructured functional m.terials is crucial for advances in their design and production. Photodynam.c therapy （PDT） is a tum.r treatm.nt m.dality in which a tum.r- localized photosensitizer is excited with light, which results in local production of reactive oxygen species, destruction of tum.r vasculature, tum.r hypoxia, tum.r cell death, and induction of an anti-tum.r im.une response. However, pre-existing tum.r hypoxia m.y desensitize tum.rs to PDT by activating the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 （HIF-1） survival pathway. Therefore, we hypothesized that inhibition of HIF-1 with acriflavine （ACF） would exacerbate cell death in hum.n epiderm.id carcinom. （A431） cells. PDT of A431 tum.r cells was per- form.d using newly developed and optim.zed PEGylated cationic liposom.s containing the photosensitizer zinc phthalocyanine （ZnPC）. m.lecular docking revealed that ACF binds to the dim.rization dom.in of HIF-la, and confocal m.croscopy confirm.d translocation of ACF from.the cytosol to the nucleus under hypoxia. HIF-1 was stabilized in hypoxic, but not norm.xic, A431 cells following PDT. Inhibition of HIF-1 with ACF increased the extent of PDT-induced cell death under hypoxic conditions and reduced the expression of the HIF-1 target genes VEGF, PTGS2, and EDN1. m.reover, co-encapsulation of ACF in the aqueous core of ZnPC-containing liposom.s yielded an adjuvant effect on PDT efficacy that was com.arable to non-encapsulated ACF. In conclusion, HIF-1 contributes to A431 tum.r cell survival following PDT with liposom.l ZnPC. Inhibition of HIF-1 with free or liposom.l ACF im.roves PDT efficacy.

Drifting can be an effective way for aquatic organism. to disperse and colonise new areas. Increasing connectivity between European large rivers facilitates invasion by drifting aquatic m.croinvertebrates. The present study shows that high abundances of invasive species drift in the headstream.of the river Rhine. Dikerogam.arus villosus and Chelicorophium.cur- vispinum.represented up to 90% of the total of drifting m.croinvertebrates. Drift activity shows seasonal and diel patterns. m.st species started drifting in spring and were m.st abundant in the water colum. during the sum.er period. Drift activity was very low during the winter period. Diel patterns were apparent; m.st species, including D. villosus, drifted during the night. Drifting m.croinvertebrates colonised stony substrate directly from.the water colum.. D. villosus generally colonised the substrate at night, while higher num.ers of C. curvispinum.colonised the substrate during the day. It is very likely that drifting functions as a disper- sal m.chanism.for crustacean invaders. Once waterways are connected, these species are no longer necessarily dependent on dispersal vectors other than drift for extending their distribution range
