Canada’s boreal forest represents an important contributor of the world’s wood supply industry. However,maintaining or increasing productivity of the boreal forest may be challenging in areas dominated by forested peatlands. Moreover, sustainable management of these forests must also consider other important aspects of the forest ecosystem such as biodiversity and carbon sequestration. To address these concerns, ecosystem-based management has been implemented in some Canadian jurisdictions, such as in regions where a large portion of the boreal forest is dominated by forested peatlands. The objectives of this paper are(1) to summarize our current understanding of how natural disturbances influence stand dynamics and biodiversity in forested peatlands, and(2) to review the main differences between natural and managed forest stands with respect to soil properties, stand productivity, understory plant communities. We also discuss how even-age management regime succeeds or fails to preserve old forests and how this loss affects both forest structure and habitat diversity at the landscape *** conclude by showing how, in boreal forested peatlands, forest management could contribute to carbon sequestration and mitigate projected climate change.

Dual stimuli-responsive polyurethane-based hydrogels as smart drug delivery carriers for the advanced treatment of chronic skin wounds

The design of multi-stimuli-responsive vehicles for the controlled and localized release of drugs is a challenging issue increasingly catching the attention of many research groups working on the advanced treatment of hard-to-close *** this work,a thermo-and pH-responsive hydrogel(P-CHP407)was prepared from an ad hoc synthesized amphiphilic poly(ether urethane)(CHP407)exposing a significant amount of-COOH groups(8.8±0.9 nmol/g_(polymer)).The exposure of acid moieties in P-CHP407 hydrogel led to slightly lower initial gelation temperature(12.1◦C vs.14.6◦C,respectively)and gelation rate than CHP407 hydrogel,as rheologically *** hydrogel characterization by Low Field NMR(LF-NMR)spectroscopy suggested that the presence of carboxylic groups in P-CHP407 caused the formation of bigger micelles with a thicker hydrated shell than CHP407 hydrogels,as further proved by Dynamic Light Scattering *** addition,P-CHP407 hydrogel showed improved capability to change its internal pH compared to CHP407 one when incubated with an alkaline buffer(pH 8)(e.g.,pH_(change_5min)=3.76 and 1.32,respectively).Moreover,LF-NMR characterization suggested a stronger alkaline-pH-induced interaction of water molecules with micelles exposing-COOH ***,the hydrogels were found biocompatible according to ISO 10993 and able to load and release Ibuprofen:delivery kinetics of Ibuprofen was enhanced by P-CHP407 hydrogels at alkaline pH,suggesting their potential use as smart delivery systems in the treatment of chronic infected wounds.

Current role of hepatopancreatoduodenectomy for the management of gallbladder cancer and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma:A systematic review

BACKGROUND Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy(HPD)is the simultaneous combination of hepatic resection,pancreaticoduodenectomy,and resection of the entire extrahepatic biliary *** is not a universally accepted due to high mortality and morbidity rates,as well as to controversial survival *** To evaluate the current role of HPD for curative treatment of gallbladder cancer(GC)or extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ECC)invading both the hepatic hilum and the intrapancreatic common bile *** A systematic literature search using the PubMed,Web of Science,and Scopus databases was performed to identify studies reporting on HPD,using the following keywords:‘Hepatopancreaticoduodenectomy’,‘hepatopancreatoduodenectomy’,‘hepatopancreatectomy’,‘pancreaticoduodenectomy’,‘hepatectomy’,‘hepatic resection’,‘liver resection’,‘Whipple procedure’,‘bile duct cancer’,‘gallbladder cancer’,and‘cholangiocarcinoma’.RESULTS This updated systematic review,focusing on 13 papers published between 2015 and 2020,found that rates of morbidity for HPD have remained high,ranging between 37.0%and 97.4%,while liver failure and pancreatic fistula are the most serious ***,perioperative mortality for HPD has decreased compared to initial experiences,and varies between 0%and 26%,although in selected center it is well below 10%.Long term survival outcomes can be achieved in selected patients with R0 resection,although 5–year survival is better for ECC than *** The present review supports the role of HPD in patients with GC and ECC with horizontal spread involving the hepatic hilum and the intrapancreatic bile duct,provided that it is performed in centers with high experience in hepatobiliarypancreatic *** use of preoperative portal vein embolization,and preoperative biliary drainage in patients with obstructive jaundice,represent strategies for decreasing the occurrence and severity of postoperative *** is advisable to develop internationa

Iconography of the Procession of Virgins, Chapel of Exodus (Egypt): Origins and Parallels

This study attempts to trace back iconographic origins of an Early Christian scene depicting a procession of women moving towards a temple. The scene makes part of the pictorial program of the so-called Chapel of Exodus-a Coptic mausoleum from Kharga Oasis in Egypt. Never being among the most popular subjects of the Early Christian art, the images of the female processions are found in the monuments throughout the Late Roman Empire, from Roman catacombs to a small house-church at the Eastern border of the Pax Romana (Dura Europos, Syria). The extant scenes are dated back to different periods and belong to the different cultural milieu. The iconographic ambiguity of the procession scene from the Exodus Chapel triggered an intense scholar discussion and gave way to multiple interpretations. Still, the meaning of the episode and the reasons for its inclusion into the pictorial ensemble concept is not quite clear. The study aims to fill these particular gaps in the previous works. The semiotic and contextual analysis allows examining the scene in its relationship with juxtaposed compositions, to compare its iconographic features with descriptions of contemporary religious practices, and clarify the function of the image in the iconographic program of the Chapel of Exodus.

Visual outcome after removal of silicone oil in patients undergoing retinectomy for complex retinal detachment

AIM：To evaluate the functional outcome after removal of silicone oil（ROSO）in patients undergoing retinectomy for complex retinal detachment.·M ETHODS：We performed a retrospective case note review of patients who underwent ROSO after retinectomy for complex retinal *** with less than 6mo follow up and recurrent retinal detachment following ROSO were excluded.·RESULTS：Thirty-six patients were *** mean best corrected visual acuity（BCVA）pre-ROSO was1.13 log MAR（SD 0.5）.The mean BCVA 3mo following ROSO was 1.16 log MAR（SD 0.53）,6mo following ROSO1.13（SD 0.63）,and 12mo following ROSO 1.18（SD 0.69）.At 12mo after ROSO,the BCVA improved in 38.9%of patients,remained unchanged in 25%,and deteriorated in 36.1%,although there was no statistical significant difference in BCVA after ROSO at 3,6 and 12mo（=0.93）.The size of retinectomy ranged from 15°to 270°（SD 53）and did not influence the visual outcome（=0.11）.·C ONCLUSION：There was no statistically significant difference in BCVA between pre-and post-ROSO following retinectomy for complex retinal *** was no statistical difference in visual outcome related to the size of the retinectomy.

Effective management of hard-to-close skin wounds is a challenging issue due to several co-morbidities in affected ***,infections represent a major obstacle in wound *** design of efficient wound treatments thus represents an urgent *** drug delivery hydrogels with intrinsic antimicrobial and antifungal properties were herein designed for perspective application in the mini-invasive treatment of hard-to-close ***,an amphiphilic polyurethane was synthesized from Poloxamer■407 macrodiol and N-Boc diethanolamine chain extender(DHP407,M_(w)=33 kDa).Chain-extension reaction step was optimized to maximize the formation of-NH groups along the polymer chains(4.5×10^(20)±1.8×10^(19)-NH groups/g polymer),after Boc-caging group removal(D-DHP407).DHP407 and D-DHP407 water-based solutions were thermosensitive with slightly different Critical Micellar Concentration(17.5μg/mL vs.19.7μg/mL)and cluster hydrodynamic diameter(235.6±19.9 nm vs.260.1±20.5 nm),and similar Critical Micellar Temperature(22.5℃ vs.23.1℃).A polyurethane solution concentration(15%w/V)was selected by tube-inverting test and rheological analysis showing injectability,as evidenced by sol-to-gel transition at 27.7±0.6℃ for DHP407 and 29.7±0.6℃ for D-DHP407,within few minutes,at similar gelation ***407 and D-DHP407 hydrogels showed controlled release of Bovine Serum Albumin(BSA)model protein(1 mg/mL),with no burst *** released from DHP407 and D-DHP407 hydrogels at 24 h was 33.7±5.0% and 24.6±1.2%,respectively.D-DHP407 hydrogel was biocompatible and able to support NIH-3T3 cell ***,D-DHP407 hydrogel showed intrinsic antifungal and antibacterial activity against *** and Gram-positive *** and Gram-negative *** bacteria,injectability and capability to retain shape post-injection,making it promising for future use in the management of hard-to-close skin wounds.

The Epidemiology of Recurrent Violence and Its Relationship with Sentence Time in the Romanian Juvenile Prison System: A Two-Year Cohort Study

Background: Research suggests that a small number of persistent violent offenders are responsible for a majority of prison violence and tend to behave violently to a disproportionate amount. However, literature on patterns of violence in juvenile prisoners is limited. Method: In order to explore how subjects engage in violence while incarcerated in the juvenile prison system, the authors will examine both proximal and distal predictors of violent behavior among juveniles in custody. This study adds to the current empirical research by longitudinally examining dynamic risk factors of recurrent violent behavior across a population of juvenile prisoners (Mage = 16.21;94.8% male) in custody in the Romanian juvenile justice system, starting from their entry date until the end of the follow-up period (Me = 2 years). Results: Results from a series of repeated aggressive events survival analyses show evidence of a long-term deleterious association between pre-incarceration risk factors and poor developmental trajectory associated with violence. Adherence to destructive conduct in prison was consistently influenced by low ability to cope with the prison environment, although education level and family factors also mattered. Implications for prison professionals and forensic practitioners are presented. Conclusion: Recurring aggressive behavior is frequent for individuals who experience complex adverse experiences during childhood, suggesting that screening youths upon their admission into juvenile justice settings should include an assessment of their basic self-regulation needs. A greater focus on longitudinal studies may help improve the screening process and also follow the progress of each juvenile to warrant the efficacy of preventive programs in self-harm, according to their emerging needs.

Biogas Production from Organic Wastes to Promote Satisfying EU Requirements

Producing of renewable energy--as well in world as in national context--was necessitated by the synergistic effect of the climate change and the long term, continuous price rise of the fossil energy carriers. Main reasons for the spread of renewable energy sources are to increase the security of the energy supply or in optimal case, to realize the total energy independence. Furthermore, numerous studies demonstrate that production and also utilization of biofuels--including the organic waste-based fuels--are environmentally sustainable and have positive impact for the security of energy supply. This paper deals with production of biogas （from agricultural organic wastes） for energy. The production of biogas and the other biofuels will help you find the balance in agriculture because they can be generated from biomass, agricultural wastes and non-food plant material. In addition to the objective of saving emissions, EU biofuels policy aims to ensure the necessary energy and to decrease unemployment. So this paper would like to contribute to the EU requirements through the research. The producing system can be expansible by utilization of other organic material, so it is supported the efficient operation.
