Using urban building energy modeling to quantify the energy performance of residential buildings under climate change

The building sector is facing a challenge in achieving carbon neutrality due to climate change and urbanization.Urban building energy modeling(UBEm)is an effective method to understand the energy use of building stocks at an urban scale and evaluate retrofit scenarios against future weather variations,supporting the implementation of carbon emission reduction policies.Currently,most studies focus on the energy performance of archetype buildings under climate change,which is hard to obtain refined results for individual buildings when scaling up to an urban area.Therefore,this study integrates future weather data with an UBEm approach to assess the impacts of climate change on the energy performance of urban areas,by taking two urban neighborhoods comprising 483 buildings in Geneva,Switzerland as case studies.In this regard,GIS datasets and Swiss building norms were collected to develop an archetype library.The building heating energy consumption was calculated by the UBEm tool—AutoBPS,which was then calibrated against annual metered data.A rapid UBEm calibration method was applied to achieve a percentage error of 2.7%.The calibrated models were then used to assess the impacts of climate change using four future weather datasets out of Shared Socioeconomic Pathways(SSP1-2.6,SSP2-4.5,SSP3-7.0,and SSP5-8.5).The results showed a decrease of 22%–31%and 21%–29%for heating energy consumption,an increase of 113%–173%and 95%–144%for cooling energy consumption in the two neighborhoods by 2050.The average annual heating intensity dropped from 81 kWh/m^(2) in the current typical climate to 57 kWh/m^(2) in the SSP5-8.5,while the cooling intensity rose from 12 kWh/m^(2) to 32 kWh/m^(2).The overall envelope system upgrade reduced the average heating and cooling energy consumption by 41.7%and 18.6%,respectively,in the SSP scenarios.The spatial and temporal distribution of energy consumption change can provide valuable information for future urban energy planning against climate change.

Towards climate resilient urban energy systems: a review

Climate change and increased urban population are two major concerns for society.moving towards more sustainable energy solutions in the urban context by integrating renewable energy technologies supports decarbonizing the energy sector and climate change mitigation.A successful transition also needs adequate consideration of climate change including extreme events to ensure the reliable performance of energy systems in the long run.This review provides an overview of and insight into the progress achieved in the energy sector to adapt to climate change,focusing on the climate resilience of urban energy systems.The state-of-the-art methodology to assess impacts of climate change including extreme events and uncertainties on the design and performance of energy systems is described and discussed.Climate resilience is an emerging concept that is increasingly used to represent the durability and stable performance of energy systems against extreme climate events.However,it has not yet been adequately explored and widely used,as its definition has not been clearly articulated and assessment is mostly based on qualitative aspects.This study reveals that a major limitation in the state-of-the-art is the inadequacy of climate change adaptation approaches in designing and preparing urban energy systems to satisfactorily address plausible extreme climate events.Furthermore,the complexity of the climate and energy models and the mismatch between their temporal and spatial resolutions are the major limitations in linking these models.Therefore,few studies have focused on the design and operation of urban energy infrastructure in terms of climate resilience.Considering the occurrence of extreme climate events and increasing demand for implementing climate adaptation strategies,the study highlights the importance of improving energy system models to consider future climate variations including extreme events to identify climate resilient energy transition pathways.

(1) machine learning methods to assist energy system optimization,by A.T.D.Perera,P.U.Wickramasinghe,vahid m.nik,Jean-Louis Scartezzini,Pages 191-205 Abstract: This study evaluates the potential of supervised and transfer learning techniques to assist energy system optimization.A surrogate model is developed with the support of a supervised learning technique (by using artificial neural network) in order to bypass computationally intensive Actual Engineering model (AEm).Eight different neural network architectures are considered in the process of developing the surrogate model.Subsequently,a hybrid optimization algorithm (HOA) is developed combining Surrogate and AEm in order to speed up the optimization process while maintaining the accuracy.Pareto optimization is conducted considering Net Present Value and Grid Integration level as the objective functions.Transfer learning is used to adapt the surrogate model (trained using supervised learning technique) for different scenarios where solar energy potential,wind speed and energy demand are notably different.Results reveal that the surrogate model can reach to Pareto solutions with a higher accuracy when grid interactions are above 10 %(with reasonable differences in the decision space variables).HOA can reach to Pareto solutions (similar to the solutions obtained using AEm) around 17 times faster than AEm.The Surrogate models developed using Transfer Learning (SmTL) shows a similar capability.SmTL combined with the optimization algorithm can predict Pareto fronts efficiently even when there are significant changes in the initial conditions.Therefore,STmL can be used along with the HOA,which reduces the computational time required for energy system optimization by 84 %.Such a significant reduction in computational time enables the approach to be used for energy system optimization at regional or national scale.

movement Trend Alterations in the Periaqueductal Gray(PAG)-Employed Ratbot Navigation Are Correlated with Stimulation Parameters

In previous studies,Periaqueductal Gray(PAG)stimulation was used to stop ratbots from moving.Due to the homology between the PAG and the intercollicular nucleus,which has been used for forward movement in birds,we investigated the possibility of PAG application to induce forward locomotion for the first time.Using a corridor maze,the traveled distances via PAG electrical stimulation were examined in nine Wistar male rats during three sessions.A custom-designed stimulator was developed to apply the stimulation.The results showed reductions in responses to stimulation over time.Accordingly,the traveled distances had negative slopes during the consecutive trials(in 8 out of the 9 rats),and the slope mean was significantly different from zero.There was a strong correlation between the stimulation parameters(electric Charge per Phase(CPP)and the Number of Pulses(NP))and the observed slopes.The negative movement Slopes(mS)were highly correlated with the CPP and the NP,as the Pearson's linear correlation coefficients were−0.87 and−0.79,respectively.The mS-CPP coefficients of determination(R-squared)were also between 0.76 and 0.95.In addition,the mS-NP coefficients of determination were between 0.63 and 0.87.Thus,it is concluded that the electrical stimulation parameters influence the behavioral outcomes directly.Furthermore,the PAG area may be considered a suitable candidate for forward locomotion control in the future if the area is harnessed effectively to prevent undesirable chaotic behaviors.

The Anxiolytic and Antidepressant Effect of Stachys Lavandulifolia in the Experimental Pentylenetetrazole-Induced Rat model of Acute Seizure

Objective:In traditional medicine,Stachys lavandulifolia or mountain tea has been used in the treatment of arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.A leaf extract from this plant is also thought to be effective in treating epilepsy as well as other neurological ailments.To assess the effect of S.lavandulifolia extract(SLE),rats were exposed to a stress and anxiety model caused by seizures.materials and methods:A challenge dose of pentylenetetrazole(PTZ)(60 mg/kg)was used to induce seizures in male Wistar rats(200-250 g).Animal treated with an intraperitoneal injection of either SLE(50 mg/kg)or sodium valproate(100 mg/kg)alone or in combination 30 min before PTZ challenge.The effect of stress and anxiety was assessed using an open field test(OFT),forced swim test(FST),and elevated plus maze(EPm).At the end of the experiment,anesthesia was used to euthanize rats,and their blood serum was collected for measurements of glutathione(GSH),malondialdehyde(mDA),and GSH peroxidase(GPx).Results:In contrast to the control group,those treated with PTZ exhibited depressive behavior.At 50 mg/kg,SLE provided protection against seizures induced by PTZ.SLE also reduced seizure-induced stress and anxiety,significantly improving FST,EPm,and OFT compared with the PTZ-treated group.By decreasing mDA levels and restoring the antioxidant enzymes GSH and GPx,SLE treatment protects against seizure-induced anxiety and stress.Conclusions:SLE inhibits oxidative stress damage and seizure-induced stress by inhibiting seizures'inhibitory effects.

Solar-driven carbon dioxide(CO_(2))conversion including photocatalytic(PC),photoelectrochemical(PEC),photovoltaic plus electrochemical(PV/EC)systems,offers a renewable and scalable way to produce fuels and high-value chemicals for environment and energy sustainability.This review summarizes the basic fundament and the recent advances in the field of solar-driven CO_(2)conversion.Expanding the visible-light absorption is an important strategy to improve solar energy conversion efficiency.The separation and migration of photogenerated charges carriers to surface sites and the surface catalytic processes also determine the photocatalytic performance.Surface engineering including co-catalyst loading,defect engineering,morphology control,surface modification,surface phase junction,and Z-scheme photocatalytic system construction,have become fundamental strategies to obtain high-efficiency photocatalysts.Similar to photocatalysis,these strategies have been applied to improve the conversion efficiency and Faradaic efficiency of typical PEC systems.In PV/EC systems,the electrode surface structure and morphology,electrolyte effects,and mass transport conditions affect the activity and selectivity of electrochemical CO_(2)reduction.Finally,the challenges and prospects are addressed for the development of solar-driven CO_(2)conversion system with high energy conversion efficiency,high product selectivity and stability.

This paper considers stability analysis of a Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered-Virus(SEIRV)model with nonlinear incidence rates and indicates the severity and weakness of control factors for disease transmission.The Lyapunov function using Volterra-Lyapunov matrices makes it possible to study the global stability of the endemic equilibrium point.An optimal control strategy is proposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus,in addition to governmental intervention.The objective is to minimize together with the quantity of infected and exposed individuals while minimizing the total costs of treatment.A numerical study of the model is also carried out to investigate the analytical results.

Global systematic review and meta-analysis of knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards dengue fever among the general population

Objective:To determine the global level of knowledge,attitudes,and practices towards dengue fever among the general population.methods:To complete this systematic review and meta-analysis,a thorough search for pertinent English-language literature was undertaken during the study's extension until October 2023.The search used Google Scholar,Scopus,Pubmed/mEDLINE,Science Direct,Web of Science,EmBASE,Springer,and ProQuest.A quality assessment checklist developed using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for the cross-sectional study was used to evaluate the risk of bias in the included papers.Inverse variance and Cochran Q statistics were employed in the STATA software version 14 to assess study heterogeneity.When there was heterogeneity,the Dersimonian and Liard random-effects models were used.Results:59 Studies totaling 87353 participants were included in this meta-analysis.These investigations included 86278 participants in 55 studies on knowledge,20196 in 33 studies on attitudes,and 74881 in 29 studies on practices.The pooled estimates for sufficient knowledge,positive attitudes,and dengue fever preventive behaviors among the general population were determined as 40.1%(95%CI 33.8%-46.5%),46.8%(95%CI 35.8%-58.9%),and 38.3%(95%CI 28.4%-48.2%),respectively.Europe exhibits the highest knowledge level at 63.5%,and Africa shows the lowest at 20.3%.Positive attitudes are most prevalent in the Eastern mediterranean(54.1%)and Southeast Asia(53.6%),contrasting sharply with the Americas,where attitudes are notably lower at 9.05%.Regarding preventive behaviors,the Americas demonstrate a prevalence of 12.1%,Southeast Asia at 28.1%,Western Pacific at 49.6%,Eastern mediterranean at 44.8%,and Africa at 47.4%.Conclusions:Regional disparities about the knowledge,attitude and preventive bahaviors are evident with Europe exhibiting the highest knowledge level while Africa has the lowest.These findings emphasize the importance of targeted public health interventions tailored to regional contexts,highlighting the need for region-specif
