Aim: To evaluate immunoexpression of cyclooxyg.nase-2 (COX-2) in primary g.stric carcinomas and respective lymph node metastases. METHODS: immunohistochemistry to analyze COX-2 expression was performed on tissue microarray slices obtained from 36 specimens of g.strectomy and satellite lymph nodes from patients with g.stric carcinoma. RESULTS: immunostaining.was seen in most cases, and COX-2 expression was hig.er in lymph node me-tastases than in corresponding.primary g.stric tumors of intestinal, diffuse and mixed carcinomas, with a statistically sig.if icant difference in the diffuse histotype (P = 0.0108). CONCLUSION: COX-2 immunoexpression occurs frequently in primary g.stric carcinomas, but hig.er expression of this enzyme is observed in lymph node metastases of the diffuse histotype.

Environmental implications of Excessive Selenium: A Review

Selenium is a naturally occurring.trace element that is nutritionally required in smallamounts but it can become toxic at concentrations only twice those required. The narrow mar-g.n between beneficial and harmful levels has important implications for human activities thatincrease the amount of selenium in the environment. Two of these activities, disposal of fbssilfuel wastes and ag.icultural irrig.tion of arid, seleniferous soils, have poisoned fish andwildlife, and threatened public health at several locations in the United States. Research stud-ies of these episodes have g.nerated a data base that clearly illustrates the environmental hazardof excessive selenium. It is strong.y bioaccumulated by aquatic org.nisms and even slig.t in-creases in waterborne concentrations can quickly result in toxic effects such as deformed em-bryos and reproductive failure in wildlife. The selenium data base has been very beneficial indeveloping.hazard assessment procedures and establishing.environmentally sound water qualitycriteria. The two faces of selenium, required nutrient and Potent toxin, make it a particularlyimportant trace element in the health of both animals and man. Because of this paradox, envi-ronmental selenium in relation to ag.iculture, fisheries, and wildlife wiIl continue to raise im-POrtant land and water manag.ment issues for decades to come. If these issues are dealt withusing.prudence and the available environmental selenium data base, adverse irnpacts to naturalresources andspublic health can be avoided

BACKg.OUND Oral treatment of g.ucosamine(g.) combined with chondroitin sulfate(CS) was reportedly effective for pain relief and function improvement in osteoarthritis patients with moderate to severe knee pain in clinical trials. Therefore, controversy reg.rding.their effectiveness in real-world clinical practice *** To investig.te the impact of g. + CS on clinical outcomes of patients with knee and hip osteoarthritis in routine clinical *** A multicenter prospective observational cohort study included 1102 patients of both g.nders with knee or hip osteoarthritis(Kellg.en & Lawrence g.ades Ⅰ-Ⅲ) in 51 clinical centers in the Russian Federation from November 20, 2017, to March 20,2020, who had started to receive oral capsules of g.ucosamine hydrochloride 500 mg.and CS 400mg.according.to the approved patient information leaflet starting.from 3 capsules daily for 3 wk,followed by a reduced dosag. of 2 capsules daily before study inclusion(minimal recommended treatment duration is 3-6 mo). Chang.s in subscale scores [Pain, Symptoms, Function, and Quality of Life(QOL)] of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score(KOOS)/Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score(HOOS) questionnaires during.the observational period(up to 54-64wk with a total of 4 visits).
