Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a disease of unknown etiology,its hallmark being ongoing hepatic *** its very nature,it is a chronic condition,although increasingly,we are becoming aware of patients with acute presentations,some of whom may have liver *** are very limited published data on patients with AIH with liver failure at initial diagnosis,which consist mostly of small retrospective *** a consequence,the clinical features and optimal management of this cohort remain poorly defined.A subset of patients with AIH who present with liver failure do respond to corticosteroids,but for the vast majority,an urgent liver transplantation may offer the only hope of long-term *** present,there is uncertainty on how best to stratify such a cohort into responders and non-responders to corticosteroids as soon as possible after hospitalization,thus optimizing their *** editorial attempts to answer some of the unresolved issues relating to management of patients with AIH with liver failure at initial ***,it must be emphasized that,at present,this editorial is based mostly on small retrospective studies,and it is an understatement that multicenter prospective studies are urgently needed to address this important clinical issue.

A lossy mode resonance(LMr)-supported fiber optic sensor in which a uniform fiber core is placed among two identical tapered regions, is investigated numerically. Indium tin oxide(ITO)and aluminum-doped zinc oxide(AZO) are considered as LMr active materials used to excite several lossy modes and gold and silver are used as surface plasmon resonance(SPr) active materials. In this probe design, a central uniform core coated with ITO/AZO is the active sensing region, whereas tapered regions are meant for bringing the incident angle close to the critical angle. The sensitivity of the present fiber optic bio-sensor is evaluated for first two LMrs utilizing both ITO and AZO separately, along with its variation with the taper ratio(Tr). For ITO, the maximum sensitivity values are observed to be 18.425 μm rIu^(-1)(refractive index unit)and 0.825 μm rIu^(-1), corresponding to the first and second LMrs, respectively, at a Tr of 1.6 and for AZO, equivalent values are 0.79 μm rIu^(-1) and 0.35 μm rIu^(-1), respectively, at a Tr of2.0. The results illustrate that the first LMr is more sensitive than the second LMr and the ITOcoated probe possesses greater sensitivity than the AZO-coated probe for both LMrs. Similarly,for the fiber optic SPr sensor, the maximum value of sensitivity is 5.6425 μm rIu^(-1), in the case of gold and 5.0615 μm rIu^(-1) in the case of silver, at a Tr of 1.6. Hence, the result shows that the sensor with the present fiber optic probe design has around a 3-fold enhancement in sensitivity compared with conventional SPr sensors. This study will have applications in many sensing schemes where the requirement of large sensitivity is vital.

Aim: To evaluate the ameliorative effect of vitamin E on aflatoxin-induced lipid peroxidation in the testis. Meth-ods: Adult male albino mice were orally administered 25 or 50 μg of aflatoxin in 0.2 mL olive oil per d for 45 *** testis was isolated, blotted free of blood and processed for biochemical analysis. results: There was a dose-de-pendent significantly higher lipid peroxidation in the testis of aflatoxin treated mice than in the controls. The levels ofnon-enzymatic antioxidants such as glutathione, total and reduced ascorbic acid, as well as the activities of enzymaticantioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase were significantly lower in the testis ofaflatoxin treated mice. Vitamin E (2 mg/d per animal; orally) pretreatment significantly ameliorates the aflatoxin-in-duced lipid peroxidation which could be due to higher enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in the testis of mice ascompared with those given aflatoxin alone. Conclusion: Vitamin E pretreatment significantly ameliorates aflatoxin-induced lipid peroxidation in the testis of mice. (Asian J Androl 2001 Sep; 3: 217 - 221)

Aim: To assess the effect of aflatoxin on biochemical changes in the testis of mice and the possibility of ameliorationby vitamin E treatment. Methods: Adult male albino mice were orally administered with 25 or 50μg of aflatoxin/animal/day (750 or 1500 μg/kg body weight) for 45 days. The testis was isolated and processed for biochemical anal-ysis. results; There was a significant, dose-dependent reduction in DNA, rNA, protein, sialic acid contents andthe activities of succinic dehydrogenase, adenosine triphosphatase and alkaline phosphatase in the testis of aflatoxin-treated mice as compared to the vehicle control. However, the acid phosphatase activity was significantly increased inthe aflatoxin-treated mice. Vitamin E (2 mg/animal/day) treatment significantly ameliorated the aflatoxin-inducedchanges, except the acid and alkaline phosphatase activities in the high dose group. Conclusion; Vitamin E treat-ment ameliorates the aflatoxin-induced changes in the testis of mice. (Asian J Androl 2001 Dec; 3: 305 - 309)

Oral administration of arsenic trioxide(3 and 6 mg/kg body weight/d) for 30 d caused, as compared with vehicle control, dose dependent significant reductions in body weight, absolute weight, protein, glycogen, as well as, total, dehydro and reduced ascorbic acid contents both in the liver and kidney of arsenic treated mice. Succinic dehydrogenase(SDH) and phosphorylase only in the liver activities were significantly reduced in a dose dependent manner. Acid phosphatase activity was significantly decreased in the liver of low dose arsenic treated animals; however, significant rise in its activity was observed in high dose group. As compared with vehicle control, treatment also caused significant dose dependent reductions in SDH, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase activities in the kidney of mice. Vitamin E cotreatment as well as, 30 d withdrawal of arsenic trioxide treatment with or without vitamin E caused significant amelioration in arsenic induced toxicity in mice. Administration of vitamin E during withdrawal of treatment also caused significant amelioration as compared from only withdrawal of the treatment. It is concluded that vitamin E ameliorates arsenic induced toxicities in the liver and kidney of mice.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of aqueous Carica papaya seed extract on microenvironment of cauda ***: Adult male albino rats were intramuscularly administered with 0 (control) or 0.5 mg papaya seed ex-tract/kg body weight for 7 days. Cauda epididymal tubular content was collected by micropuncture technique; epididy-mal luminal fluid and sperm pellets were separately analyzed. results: The results revealed that the extract treat-ment caused significant reduction, as compared with control, in total protein and sialic acid contents in both epididymalfluid and sperm pellet. As compared with control, significantly lowered acid phosphatase activity was recorded in spermpellet but was higher in epididymal fluid after the treatment. The extract treatment also caused significant reduction inlevel of inorganic phosphorus in the epididymal fluid. Conclusion: It is concluded that the aqueous papaya seed ex-tract alters cauda epididymal microenvironment.

The two-body weak decays B→πD/B→ρD and B→πD are examined using isospin analysis to study nonfactorizable *** determining strong interaction phases and obtaining factorizable contributions from spectator-quark diagrams for Nc=3,we determine nonfactorizable isospin amplitudes from the experimental data for these *** results support the universality of the ratio of nonfactorizable isospin reduced amplitudes for these decays within experimental *** demonstrate that these systematics are not coincidental,we also plot our results *** ratio.

Fabrication of AA7005/TiB2-B4C surface composite by friction stir processing: Evaluation of ballistic behaviour

The present work aims to enhance the ballistic resistance of AA7005 alloy by incorporating the TiB2 and B4C ceramic reinforcement particles. Surface composites with different weight fractions of TiB2 and B4C particles were processed by friction stir processing. Micro-hardness and depth of penetration tests were carried out to evaluate the ballistic properties of the surface composites. The surface hardness of the composite was found to be nearly 70 HV higher than base alloy. The depth of penetration of the steel projectile was 20e26mm in the composites as compared to 37mm in the base alloy. Ballistic mass efficiency factor of the surface composite was found to be 1.6 times higher than base alloy. This is mainly attributed to the dispersion strengthening from the reinforcement particles.
