Application of nanofiltration to treat rare earth element(neodymium) containing water

The scope of present work was to study the feasibility of a commercial nanofiltration （NF） membrane to reject Nd（Ⅲ） ions from synthetic aqueous solution. The permeates were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry （ICP-AES） to find Nd（Ⅲ） concentration. Experimental results indicated that the Nd（Ⅲ） rejection increased with increase in applied pressure and feed flow rate; and decreased with increase in feed concentration. Rejection of Nd（Ⅲ） ions using NF membrane were widely influenced by solution pH due to the charged nature of the membrane which changed with the variation in pH. The use ofa surfactant （sodium dodecyl sulphate） in aqueous solution resulted in its adsorption on the membrane surface, thereby changing membrane characteristics, and in turn influencing the rejection. The complexation step induced had also increased the rejection to a greater extent by forming [Nd-EDTA] complex thereby increasing its molecular weight and thus increasing rejection.

We investigate the properties of the excess charge(electron, hole) introduced into a two-strand biomolecule. We consider the possibility that the stable soliton excitation can be formed due to interaction of excess charge with the phonon subsystem. The influence of overlap of the molecular orbitals between adjacent structure elements of the macromolecular chain on the soliton properties is discussed. Special attention is paid to the influence of the overlapping of the molecular orbitals between structure elements placed on the different chains. Using the literature values of the basic energy parameters of the two-chain biomolecular structures, possible types of soliton solutions are discussed.

Electrochemical manufacturing of nanocarbons from carbon dioxide in molten alkali metal carbonate salts： roles of alkali metal cations

One simple and fast way to manufacture a useful product from CO2 is to capture the gas by, and then carry out electrolysis in molten alkali metal carbonates. Carbon electro-deposition in molten Li2CO3-Na2CO3- KaCO3 （molar ratio： 43.5：31.5：25.0） has been widely reported in literature. However, studies in each of the individual alkali metal carbonates either have received less attention or are simply lacking in literature. Electrochem- ical studies of these molten carbonates are important to understand their underlying processes and reactions during the electrolysis. In this work, cyclic voltammograms （Cvs） were recorded in each of the above-mentioned molten alkali carbonate salts using a 0.25 mm diameter Pt wire working electrode. In molten Na2CO3 and K2CO3, the main cathodic reaction was likely the formation of alkali metal, while that in Li2CO3 was carbon deposition. The results also suggest that other competing reactions such as CO and alkali metal carbide formation are possible as well in dif- ferent molten salts. On the Cvs, the anodic current peaks observed are mostly associated with the oxidation of cathodic products. Flake/ring/sheet-like structures and quasi-spherical particles were observed in the produced carbon. The morphology of the carbon contained both amorphous and graphitic structures, which varied with different electrolysis variables.

Synthesis,characterization and application of PvA/ionic liquid mixed matrix membranes for pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol

In this study,polyvinyl alcohol(PvA)–ionic liquid(IL) membranes were prepared for the separation of isopropyl alcohol(IPA)–water azeotropic mixtures by ***-IL composite membranes were prepared by simple solvent evaporation method using four ILs,viz.,1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride(BMIMCl),1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride(HMIMCl),1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetra fluoroborate(HMIMBF4) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride(OMIMCl).Three ILs were used to study the effect of alkyl chain on the pervaporation *** study had focused on the effect feed water concentration from 10%–40%and effect of feed temperature from 50–80°*** properties of all the membranes were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and contact angle *** Arrhenius activation energies for permeation were estimated to be in the range 4–12 kJ·mol-1 from the temperature dependent permeation values.

The Potential Game-Changer:A Concept-to-Proof Study on D:A Heterojunction-Free Organic Photovoltaics

Since 1986,the donor-acceptor (D:A) heterojunction has been regarded a necessity for high-efficiency organic photovoltaics (OPvs),due to its unique advantage in compensating the intrinsic limitations of organic semiconductors,such as high exciton binding energy and poor ambipolar charge mobility. While this adversely causes tremendous non-radiative charge recombination and instability issues,which currently become the most critical limits for commercialization of OPvs. Here,we present a concept-to-proof study on the potential of D:A heterojunction free OPv by taking advantage of recent progress of non-fullerene acceptors. First,we demonstrate that the “free carriers” can be spontaneously generated upon illumination in an NFA,i.e.,the 6TIC-4F single layer. Second,the 6TIC-4F layer also exhibits good ambipolar charge transporting property. These exceptional characteristics distinguish it from the traditional organic semiconductors,and relieve it from the reliance of D:A heterojunction to independently work as active layer. As a result,the subsequent OPv by simply sandwiching the 6TIC-4F layer between the cathode and anode yields a considerably high power conversion efficiency ~1%. Moreover,we find the D:A heterojunction free device exhibits two order of magnitude higher electroluminescence quantum efficiency and significantly reduced vOC loss by 0.16 ev compared to those of the D:A BHJ structure,validating its promise for higher efficiency in the future. Therefore,our work demonstrates the possibility of using D:A heterojunction-free device structure for high performance,that can potentially become the next game changer of OPv.

Frequency Extrapolation through Sparse Sums of Lorentzians

Sparse sums of Lorentzians can give good approximations to functions consisting of linear combination of piecewise continuous functions. To each Lorentzian, two parameters are as- signed： translation and scale. These parameters can be found by using a method for complex fre- quency detection in the frequency domain. This method is based on an alternating projection scheme between Hankel matrices and finite rank operators, and have the advantage that it can be done in weighted spaces. The weighted spaces can be used to partially revoke the effect of finite band-width filters. Apart from frequency extrapolation the method provides a way of estimating discontinuity locations.
