Surgical apgar score predicts early complication in transfemoral amputees:Retrospective study of 170 major amputations

AIM to assess whether the surgical apgar score(SAS) is a prognostic tool capable of identifying patients at risk of major complications following lower extremity amputations *** this was a single-center,retrospective observational cohort study conducted between January 2013 and April 2015. All patients who had either a primary transtibial amputation(ttA) or transfemoral amputation(tFA) conducted at our institution during the study period were assessed for inclusion. All ttA patients underwent a standardized one-stage operative procedure(ad modum Persson amputation) performed approximately 10 cm below the knee joint. All ttA procedures were performedwith sagittal flaps. tFA procedures were performed in one stage with amputation approximately 10 cm above the knee joint,performed with anterior/posterior flaps. trained residents or senior consultants performed the surgical procedures. the SAS is based on intraoperative heart rate,blood pressure and blood loss. Intraoperative parameters of interest were collected by revising electronic health records. the first author of this study calculated the SAS. Data regarding major complications were not revealed to the author until after the calculation of SAS. the SAS results were arranged into four groups(SAS 0-4,SAS 5-6,SAS 7-8 and SAS 9-10). the cohort was then divided into two groups representing low-risk(SAS ≥ 7) and highrisk patients(SAS tablished threshold. the outcome of interest was the occurrence of major complications and death within 30-d of *** A logistic regression model with SAS 9-10 as a reference showed a significant linear association between lower SAS and more postoperative complications [all patients: OR = 2.00(1.33-3.03),P = 0.001]. this effect was pronounced for tFA [OR = 2.61(1.52-4.47),P t increase was observed for the high-risk group compared to the low-risk group for all patients [OR = 2.80(1.40-5.61),P = 0.004] and for the tFA sub-

Mass spectrometry(MS)-based proteomics has developed into a battery of approaches that is exceedingly adept at identifying with high mass accuracy and precision any of the following:oxidative damage to proteins(redox proteomics),phosphorylation(phosphoproteomics),ubiquitination(diglycine remnant proteomics),protein fragmentation(degradomics),and other posttranslational modifications(PtMs).Many studies have linked these PtMs to pathogenic mechanisms of *** date,identifying PtMs on specific pathology-associated proteins has proven to be a valuable step in the evaluation of functional alteration of proteins and also elucidates biochemical and structural explanations for possible pathophysiological mechanisms of neurodegenerative *** review provides an overview of methods applicable to the identification and quantification of PtMs on proteins and enumerates historic,recent,and potential future research endeavours in the field of proteomics furthering the understanding of PtM roles in the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration.

the anterior pituitary gland drives highly conserved physiologic processes in mammalian *** hormonally controlled processes are central to somatic growth,pubertal transformation,fertility,lactation,and *** cellular models of mammalian anteiror pituitary,largely built on candidate gene based immuno-histochemical and mRNA analyses,suggest that each of the seven hormones synthesized by the pituitary is produced by a specific and exclusive cell ***,emerging evidence suggests more complex relationship between hormone specificity and cell *** we have applied massively parallel single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq),in conjunction with complementary imaging-based single-cell analyses of mRNAs and proteins,to systematically map both cell-type diversity and functional state heterogeneity in adult male and female mouse pituitaries at single-cell resolution and in the context of major physiologic *** quantitative single-cell analyses reveal sex-specific cell-type composition under normal pituitary homeostasis,identify an array of cells associated with complex complements of hormone-enrlchment,and undercover non-hormone producing interstitial and supporting ***,we also identified a Pou1f1-expressing cell population that is characterized by a unique multi-hormone gene expression *** response to two well-defined physiologic stresses,dynamic shifts in cellular diversity and trenscrlptome profiles were observed for major hormone producing and the putative multi-hormone *** studies reveal unanticipated cellular complexity and plasticity in adult pituitary,and provide a rich resource for further validating and expanding our molecular understanding of pituitary gene expression programs and hormone production.

Magnetospheric Boundary Layer Structure and Dynamics as Seen From Cluster and Double Star Measurements

In this review,we discuss the structure and dynamics of the magnetospheric LowLatitude Boundary Layer(LLBL)based on recent results from multi-satellite missions Cluster and Double *** boundary layer,adjacent to the magnetopause on the magnetospheric side,usually consists of a mixture of plasma of magnetospheric and magnetosheath origins,and plays an important role in the transfer of mass and energy from the solar wind into the magnetosphere and subsequent magnetospheric *** southward Interplanetary Magnetic Field(IMF)conditions,this boundary layer is generally considered to be formed as a result of the reconnection process between the IMF and magnetospheric magnetic field lines at the dayside magnetopause,and the structure and plasma properties inside the LLBL can be understood in terms of the time history since the reconnection *** northward IMF conditions,the LLBL is usually thicker,and has more complex structure and *** observations confirm that the LLBL observed at the dayside can be formed by single lobe reconnection,dual lobe reconnection,or by sequential dual lobe reconnection,as well as partially by localized cross-field *** LLBL magnetic topology and plasma signatures inside the different sub-layers formed by these processes are discussed in this *** role of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the formation of the LLBL at the flank magnetopause is also ***,we conclude that the LLBL observed at the flanks can be formed by the combination of processes,(dual)lobe reconnection and plasma mixing due to non-linear Kelvin-Helmholtz waves.

Cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness associations with older adolescent cognitive control

Background:Participation in physical activity supports greater cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF),a correlate of cognitive ***,the relationship between muscular fitness(MF)and cognitive control is less *** present study investigated the differential relationship of CRF and MF with cognitive control in older ***:this cross-sectional study involved students(1517 years old,n=541,43%female)from 20 secondary schools who completed tests of inhibition(modified flanker task),working memory(n-back task),CRF(Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run),and MF(standing long jump and push-up test).Multilevel analyses tested the association between CRF or MF and cognitive outcomes while accounting for the influence of the other fitness variable and relevant demographic ***:CRF predicted response accuracy during incongruent flanker trials,the condition requiring greater *** the working memory task,CRF predicted greater target accuracy and greater d’scores on the 1-back task,requiring lesser amounts of working *** the 2-back task,which requires greater amounts of working memory,CRF also predicted greater target and non-target accuracy and d’***,MF did not predict any cognitive outcomes after adjustment for ***:CRF was selectively related to better performance during task conditions that require greater amounts of inhibition and working *** finding suggests that CRF,but not MF,may benefit cognitive control in older *** selective influence of CRF on older adolescents’cognition highlights the value of aerobic physical activity.

Polydiacetylene (PDA) is one of the promising candidates for organic third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) material, due to fast optical responsibility and easy processability in comparison with semiconductors etc. the magnitude of NLO property, however, is not still sufficient for the devices applications. Neeves, et al[1] theoretically predicted the enhancement of NLO property for core-shell type hybridized nanocrystal (NC) composed of PDA and metal. In the present study, we have prepared the two kinds of core-shell type hybridized nano-structure, and investigated their optical properties.

Dielectric properties of amorphous Zr-Al-O and Zr-Si-O thin films

We have systematically studied the composition dependence of the dielectric properties of Zr_(1-x)Al_(x)O_(2-x/2)and Zr_(1-x)Si_(x)O_(2).An essentially linear variation of the static dielectric constant,ε_(s),was observed as a function of composition,x,for compositions rich in the p-block element,i.e.,x>0.4,for both chemical *** an abrupt change inε_(s)is found near x≈0.35,associated with the onset of crystallinity in as-deposited *** fields do not show a comparable composition *** of the index of refraction at optical frequencies,combined with a simple Clausius-Mossotti interpretation,indicates that low-frequency(ionic)contributions to the polarizability exhibit systematic deviation with respect to values linearly interpolated from the *** trends are not consistently affected by the presence of crystalline order,but are related to changes associated with heterogeneous local oxygen coordination and bonding.

青藏高原在新近纪的显著隆升对东亚乃至全球的气候环境产生了巨大的影响,因此,建立青藏高原新近纪地层框架对地球科学各领域的研究都有重要的意义.国际新近纪年代地层系统以海相为标准,分为中新统的6个阶和上新统的2个阶.新生代以来,陆相地层在陆地上所占的比例迅速增加,到新近纪时已远远超过海相地层,在青藏高原及其周边地区几乎全部为陆相地层.中国的中新统包括5个阶,上新统包括2个阶,除中中新统的通古尔阶以15Ma为底界外,其余各阶都与对应的国际海相阶具有相同的古地磁定义和时限.哺乳动物化石在新生代陆相地层的划分对比中占有非常重要的地位,在新近系尤其倚重于啮齿类、食肉类、长鼻类、奇蹄类和偶蹄类化石.青藏高原有不少地层出露好且富含哺乳动物化石的盆地,新近系谢家阶和灞河阶的底界层型剖面分别位于西宁盆地和临夏盆地,并有精细的古地磁定年与哺乳动物化石相互配合,其余各阶的底界在青藏高原也可以有效确定.东亚地区许多哺乳动物首现属出现在青藏高原及其周边地区,在东北缘的临夏盆地和西南缘的西瓦立克地区尤为典型,其中,西瓦立克的原恐象Prodeinotherium首现于中新统底界,旧大陆最早的三趾马Hipparion首现于临夏盆地的灞河阶底界.对青藏高原及其周缘地区新生代沉积物及其所含的哺乳动物化石进行的牙釉质和古土壤碳氧同位素分析重建了气候环境背景及植被发育特征,发现其既与全球变化相关,又有地区性的特点.根据碳同位素变化得到的晚中新世C4植物扩张事件证据来自于青藏高原南缘,但形成鲜明对比的是,多个食草哺乳动物类群和古土壤碳酸盐及有机质的δ13C指示在青藏高原北缘直到新近纪末期仍然缺少明确或显著的C4植物信号.δ^(18)O分析显示在新生代存在几次重大的气候变化事件,尤其是晚中新世末期约7Ma的δ^(18)O正漂指示了青藏高原南北两侧向更干旱环境的转变.青藏高原在晚中新世的强烈隆升强化了海陆热力对比,由此加强了季风环流并导致C4植被在南亚扩张,但能够为中国北方带来大气降水和C4植物适宜气候的东亚夏季风还不足以影响到青藏高原北部地区.青藏高原在中新世整体上已上升至海拔3000m左右,成为阻碍大型哺乳动物交流的屏障;至上新世达到4000m以上的现代海拔高度,由此形成冰冻圈环境,导致冰期动物群祖先类型出现.

Scalable arrays of chemical vapor sensors based on DNA-decorated graphene

Arrays of chemical vapor sensors based on graphene field effect transistors functionalized with single-stranded DNA have been demonstrated. Standard photolithographic processing was adapted for use on large-area graphene by including a metal protection layer, which protected the graphene from contamination and enabled fabrication of high quality field-effect transistors （GFEts）. Processed graphene devices had hole mobilities of 1,640 ± 250 cm2.V-1.s-1 and Dirac voltages of 15 ± 10 V under ambient conditions. Atomic force microscopy was used to verify that the graphene surface remained uncontaminated and therefore suitable for controlled chemical functionalization. Single-stranded DNA was chosen as the functionalization layer due to its affinity to a wide range of target molecules and π-π stacking interaction with graphene, which led to minimal degradation of device characteristics. the resulting sensor arrays showed analyte- and DNA sequence-dependent responses down to parts-per-billion concentrations. DNA/GFEt sensors were able to differentiate among chemically similar analytes, including a series of carboxylic acids, and structural isomers of carboxylic acids and pinene. Evidence for the important role of electrostatic chemical gating was provided by the observation of understandable differences in the sensor response to two compounds that differed only by the replacement of a （deprotonating） hydroxyl group by a neutral methyl group. Finally, target analytes were detected without loss of sensitivity in a large background of a chemically similar, volatile compound. these results motivate further development of the DNA/graphene sensor family for use in an electronic olfaction system.
