Background： We examined the impact of adjuvant modalities on resected pancreatic and periampullary adenocarcinoma（PAC）.Methods： A total of 563 patients who were curatively resected for PAC were retrospectively analyzed between 2003 and 2013.Results： Of 563 patients, 472 received adjuvant chemotherapy（CT） alone, chemoradiotherapy（CRT） alone, and chemoradiotherapy plus chemotherapy（CRT-CT） were analyzed. Of the 472 patients, 231 were given CRT-CT, 26 were given CRT, and 215 were given CT. The median recurrence-free survival（RFS） and overall survival（OS） were 12 and 19 months, respectively. When CT and CRT-CT groups were compared, there was no significant difference with respect to both RFS and OS, and also there was no difference in RFS and OS among CRT-CT, CT and CRT groups. To further investigate the impact of radiation on subgroups, patients were stratified according to lymph node status and resection margins. In node-positive patients, both RFS and OS were significantly longer in CRT-CT than CT. In contrast, there was no significant differencebetween groups when patients with node-negative disease or patients with or without positive surgical margins were considered.Conclusions： Addition of radiation to CT has a survival benefit in patients with node-positive disease following pancreatic resection.

Design of a large-scale model for wind tunnel test of a multiadaptive flap concept

The design and application of morphing systems are ongoing issues compelling the aviation industry.The Clean Sky-program represents the most significant aeronautical research ever launched in Europe on advanced technologies for greening next-generation aircraft.The primary purpose of the program is to develop new concepts aimed at decreasing the effects of aviation on the environment,increasing reliability,and promoting eco-friendly mobility.These ambitions are pursued through research on enabling technologies fostering noise and gas emissions reduction,mainly by improving aircraft aerodynamic performances.Within the Clean Sky framework,a multimodal morphing flap device was designed based on tight industrial requirements and tailored for large civil aircraft applications.The flap is deployed in one unique setting,and its cross section is morphed differently in take-off and landing to get the necessary extra lift for the specific flight phase.Moreover,during the cruise,the tip of the flap is deflected for load control and induced drag reduction.Before manufacturing the first flap prototype,a high-speed(Ma=0.3),large-scale test campaign(geometric scale factor 1:3)was deemed necessary to validate the performance improvements brought by this novel system at the aircraft level.On the other hand,the geometrical scaling of the flap prototype was considered impracticable due to the unscalability of the embedded mechanisms and actuators for shape transition.Therefore,a new architecture was conceived for the flap model to comply with the scaled dimensions requirements,withstand the relevant loads expected during the wind tunnel tests and emulate the shape transition capabilities of the true-scale flap.Simplified strategies were developed to effectively morph the model during wind tunnel tests while ensuring the robustness of each morphed configuration and maintaining adequate stiffness levels to prevent undesirable deviations from the intended aerodynamic shapes.Additionally,a simplified design was conceived for the flap-w

IL-2 and IL-15 Exhibit Opposing Effects on Fas Mediated Apoptosis

It has been shown that IL-2 and IL-15 can have opposing effects on life and death of T cells.However,the roie of IL-2 and IL-15 in regulating the fate of other cell types is less clear.In the present study,we examined the impact of IL-2 and IL-15 on life and death of pre-B cells using the BAF-B03 line.We showed that BAF-B03 cells constitutively expressed the private IL-2Rα chain and IL-15Rα chain,and the shared IL-2Rβ chain and γc chain.Stimulation of BAF-B03 cells in vitro with IL-2 and IL-15 induced vigorous cell proliferation in a dose-dependent fashion.Titration of IL-2 and IL-15 in the assay showed that the mitotic effects of IL-2 and IL-15 were remarkably similar.However,the sensitivities of BAF-B03 cells to Fas mediated apoptosis after IL-2 and IL-15 stimulation were strikingly different.Cells cultured in IL-2 readily underwent apoptotic cell death upon cross-linking of the Fas receptor whereas cells cultured in IL-15 were extremely resistant to Fas triggered cell death.The anti-apoptotic effect of IL-15 in this model was associated with increased expression of Bcl-xL. FLIP expression,however,was comparable between IL-2 and IL-15 stimulated cells.We conclude that IL-2 and IL-15 have diametrically opposite effect on the fate of BAF-B03 cells,although both cytokines share similar receptor structure and exhibit similar mitotic activities.Cellular & Molecular Immunology.2004;1(2):123-128.

The analysis of cytosine methylation provides a new way to assess and describe epigenetic regulation at a whole-genome level in many eukaryotes.DNA methylation has a demonstrated role in the genome stability and protection,regulation of gene expression and many other aspects of genome function and maintenance.BS-seq is a relatively unbiased method for profiling the DNA methylation,with a resolution capable of measuring methylation at individual cytosines.Here we describe,as an example,a workflow to handle DNA methylation analysis,from BS-seq library preparation to the data visualization.We describe some applications for the analysis and interpretation of these data.Our laboratory provides public access to plant DNA methylation data via visualization tools available at our ＂Next-Gen Sequence＂ websites（http：//mpss.***.edu）,along with small RNA,RNA-seq and other data types.

Association of carbon monoxide poisonings and carboxyhemoglobin levels with COVID-19 and clinical severity

BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),which recently spread throughout the entire world,is still a significant health issue.Additionally,the most common cause of risky poisoning in emergency services is carbon monoxide(CO)poisoning.Both disorders seem to merit more research as they have an impact on all bodily systems via the lungs.AIM To determine how arterial blood gas and carboxyhemoglobin(COHb)levels affect the clinical and prognostic results of individuals requiring emergency treatment who have both COVID-19 and CO poisoning.METHODS Between January 2018 and December 2021,479 CO-poisoning patients participated in this single-center,retrospective study.Patients were primarily divided into two groups for analysis:Pre-pandemic and pandemic periods.Additionally,the pandemic era was divided into categories based on the presence of COVID-19 and,if present,the clinical severity of the infection.The hospital information system was used to extract patient demographic,clinical,arterial blood gas,COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction,and other laboratory data.RESULTS The mean age of the 479 patients was 54.93±11.51 years,and 187(39%)were female.226(47%)patients were in the pandemic group and 143(30%)of them had a history of COVID-19.While the mean potential of hydrogen(pH)in arterial blood gas of all patients was 7.28±0.15,it was 7.35±0.10 in the pre-pandemic group and 7.05±0.16 in the severe group during the pandemic period(P<0.001).COHb was 23.98±4.19%in the outpatients and 45.26%±3.19%in the mortality group(P<0.001).Partial arterial oxygen pressure(PaO2)was 89.63±7.62 mmHg in the pre-pandemic group,and 79.50±7.18 mmHg in the severe group during the pandemic period(P<0.001).Despite the fact that mortality occurred in 35(7%)of all cases,pandemic cases accounted for 30 of these deaths(85.7%)(P<0.001).The association between COHb,troponin,lactate,partial arterial pressure of carbon dioxide,HCO3,calcium,glucose,age,pH,PaO2,potassium,sodium,and base excess levels in the pre-pandemic and pandemic groups was statistical

Ammonia borane-based reactive mixture for trapping and converting carbon dioxide

Ammonia borane(NH_(3)BH_(3))is a reducing agent,able to trap and convert carbon dioxide.In the present work,we used a reactive solid consisting of a mixture of 90 wt.%of NH_(3)BH_(3)and 10 wt.%of palladium chloride,because the mixture reacts in a fast and exothermic way while releasing H2 and generating catalytic Pd0.We took advantage of such reactivity to trap and convert CO_(2)(7 bar),knowing besides that Pd0 is a CO_(2)hydrogenation catalyst.The operation(i.***.stage 1)was effective:BNH polymers,and B−O,C=O,C−O,and C−H bonds(like in BOCH_(3)and BOOCH groups)were identified.We then(in stage 2)pyrolyzed the as-obtained solid at 1250℃ and washed it with water.In doing so,we isolated cyclotriboric acid H_(3)B3O6(stemming from B2O3 formed at 1250℃),hexagonal boron nitride,and graphitic carbon.In conclusion,the stage 1 showed that CO_(2)can be‘trapped’and converted,resulting in the formation of BOCH_(3)and BOOCH groups(possible sources of methanol and formic acid),and the stage 2 showed that CO_(2)transforms into graphitic carbon.

The immune system has a remarkable ability to respond to seemingly endless antigens.In essence,a productive immune response takes place along a well defined but treacherous line,that is to effectively eradicate pathogens,and at the same time avoid causing damage to self organs.This type of response is fine-tuned,at least in part,by a complex array of pathways that either promote or inhibit the activation of innate and adaptive immune cells.Much effort has been focused on pathways that can support immune activation.In this article,we review specifically pathways that can inhibit immune responses and maintain immune homeostasis,highlighting our recent understanding on the role of inhibitory receptors that selectively engage the self MHC class I molecules and the B7 superfamily members,we also discuss the inhibitory Fc receptors and inhibitory cytokines and how such pathways,either individually or collectively,regulate innate and adaptive immune responses.Finally,we summarize new emerging approaches on how such negative pathways can be therapeutically modulated in various disease settings.

It is assumed to occur as an arrest in normal endomyocardial morphogenesis and is mostly associated with other congenital cardiac malformations The left ventricle is usually involved; but, both ventricules can be affected.

Dear Editor,Intra-arterial chemotherapy(IAC)is a treatment for retinoblastoma that involves direct injection of chemotherapeutic agent into the ophthalmic artery.The main advantage of this method is the ability to deliver high drug concentration in the tumor with low systemic toxicity^([1-2]).However,it has the potential to cause vascular-related ocular side effects of vitreous hemorrhage,branch retinal artery obstruction,ophthalmic artery spasm with reperfusion or obstruction,and choroidal ischemia[3].

Monoclinic yttrium tantalate (M′-YTaO4, M′-YTO), and two different kinds of yttrium niobium-tantalate (M′-YTa0.85Nb0.15O4 (M′-YTNO) and Eu3+ doped M′-YTa0.85Nb0.15O4 (M′-YTNO:Eu3+)) were produced by sol–gel method and grown on single crystalline Si (100) substrate by spin coating approach. Structural properties and thermal behaviours of the films were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG–DTA). Systematic Steady-state photoluminescence and lifetime measurements in a series of yttrium niobium-tantalate with varying amounts of Eu3+ were presented. The photoluminescence spectra of the films exhibited strong blue (380–400 nm) and red (614 nm) emissions upon ultraviolet excitation. Emission intensities were strongly dependent on the host lattice composition and film morphology. 1.5% Eu3+ doped films exhibited the brightest luminescence and long lifetime extending to 1.22 ms when excited at 254 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt in the production of M′-YTO, M′-YTNO, and M′-YTNO:Eu3+ films on single crystalline Si (100) substrate via sol–gel spin coating.
