Investigation of hearing aid users'speech understanding in noise and their spectral-temporal resolution skills

Purpose:Our study aims to compare speech understanding in noise and spectral-temporal resolution skills with regard to the degree of hearing loss,age,hearing aid use experience and gender of hearing aid ***:Our study included sixty-eight hearing aid users aged between 40-70 years,with bilateral mild and moderate symmetrical sensorineural hearing *** gap detection test,Turkish matrix test and spectral-temporally modulated ripple test were implemented on the participants with bilateral hearing *** test results acquired were compared statistically according to different variables and the correlations were ***:No statistically significant differences were observed for speech-in-noise recognition,spectraltemporal resolution among older and younger adults in hearing aid users(p>0.05).There wasn’t found a statistically significant difference among test outcomes as regards different hearing loss degrees(p>0.05).Higher performances were obtained in terms of temporal resolution in male participants and participants with more hearing aid use experience(p<0.05).Significant correlations were obtained between the results of speech-in-noise recognition,temporal resolution and spectral resolution tests performed with hearing aids(p<0.05).Conclusion:Our study findings emphasized the importance of regular hearing aid use and it showed that some auditory skills can be improved with hearing *** of correlations among the speechin-noise recognition,temporal resolution and spectral resolution tests have revealed that these skills should be evaluated as a whole to maximize the patient’s communication abilities.

Impacts of urban headwater disturbances on downstream sediment loading where streamside management zones for forest harvesting activities are present downstream

Watershed disturbances caused by land use/land cover(LU/LC) change, intensive forestry practices, and other forms of watershed disturbance are known to negatively affect water quality, if best management practices(BMPs) are not present. Disturbances near or around headwaters where BMPs are absent or are inadequate may impact downstream water quality and stream ecology regardless of the presence of downstream BMPs. In this study, the recovery of two small forest-dominated watersheds(Ww and Ew) in Auburn, Alabama, USA, was monitored 6-years after a partial clearcut was done. The streamside management zone(SMZ) in Ww was also partially harvested shortly after the partial clearcut to improve its sediment trapping effectiveness over the long-term. The hydrology and sediment transport in these watersheds were expected to stabilize over this period, however, new disturbances in the headwaters of both watersheds changed the watershed dynamics. Streamflow and sediment load were examined over a15-month period from February 2014 to May 2015. The clearcut in Ww and Ew, and the partially harvested SMZ in Ww seemed to have recovered; however, substantial amount of sediment load were measured across all monitoring sites in both watersheds as a result of upstream disturbances. This study emphasizes the necessity of watershed management as a whole, and the importance of BMP applications within the entire watershed. It also highlights the fact that watershed management and BMP implementation is a dynamic process, thus, strategies and techniques need to be continuously adapted in response to environmental changes.

In framework of the fictitious domain methods with immersed interfaces for the elasticity problem,the present contribution is to study and numerically validate the jump-integrated boundary conditions method with sharp interface for the vector elasticity system discretized by a proposed finite volume *** main idea of the fictitious domain approach consists in embedding the original domain of study into a geometrically larger and simpler one called the fictitious ***,we present a cell-centered finite volume method to discretize the fictitious domain *** proposed method is numerically validated for different test *** work can be considered as a first step before more challenging problems such as fluid-structure interactions or moving interface problems.

Inhibition of GABAA-ρreceptors induces retina regeneration in zebrafish

A potential treatment for retinal diseases is to induce an endogenous Müller glia(MG)-derived regenerative response to replace damaged *** contrast to mammalian MG,zebrafish MG are capable of mediating spontaneous *** seek to define the mechanisms that enable retina regeneration in zebrafish in order to identify therapeutic targets to induce mammalian retina *** previously used pharmacological and genetic methods to inhibit gamma aminobutyric acid A(GABAA)receptors in undamaged zebrafish retinas and showed that such inhibition could induce initiation of retina regeneration,as measured by the dedifferentiation of MG and the appearance of MG-derived proliferating progenitor ***,we show that inhibition of a pharmacologically distinct subset of GABAA receptors(GABAA-ρ)can also induce retina *** inhibition of both GABA receptor subtypes led to enhanced retina *** expression analyses indicate that inhibition of GABAA-ρreceptors induces a canonical retinal regenerative *** results support a model in which decreased levels of GABA,such as would occur after retinal cell death or damage,induce dedifferentiation of MG and the generation of proliferating progenitor cells during zebrafish retina *** experiments were approved by the Vanderbilt's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(Protocol M1800200)on January 29,2019.

The evolution of aposematism is accompanied by increased diversification

Although the use of distinct colors to indicate unprofitability to predators(***)is commonly thought of as an adaptation,our knowledge of its macroevolutionary effects is *** aposematism is expected to decrease attacks by predators,we hypothesized that aposematic lineages should be larger on average than their non-aposematic sister groups because of the decreased probability of extinction and/or increased probability of speciation(*** diversification).The results of our sister-group analysis are consistent with the hypothesis that the evolution of aposematism is accompanied by increased diversification of lineages,with the aposematic focal group having more species in 11 of 14 pairs of sister *** the apparent advantages of reduced predation risk on diversification rates,the evolution of aposematism is relatively rare and reversions to a cryptic state are not *** addition to the difficulties in evolving a trait that initially decreases the survivorship of prey among naïve predators,we discuss other factors that may limit the apparent prevalence and success of *** is hoped that the results of our analysis will encourage further analyses of the phylogenetic relationships among aposematic groups and their relatives,and of the evolutionary time scales over which the benefits of aposematism are the greatest to lineages with this condition.

Biotic resistance limits the invasiveness of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis （Thysanoptera： Thripidae）, in Florida

The spread of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis （Pergande）, has resulted in the world-wide destabilization of established integrated pest management programs for many crops. It is hypothesized that frequent exposure to insecticides in intensive agriculture selected for resistant populations, which allowed invasive populations in the eastern USA to overcome biotic resistance from the native community of species. Research conducted in Florida to understand the role of biotic factors in limiting the abundance of the western flower thrips is reviewed. Orius spp. （Hemiptera： Anthocoridae） are effective predators that suppress populations of thrips on crop and non-crop hosts in southern and northern Florida. Orius are more effective predators of the western flower thrips than the native flower thrips, E tritici （Fitch） and E bispinosa （Morgan）. The native species are competitors of the western flower thrips. Excessive fertilization and the use of broad-spectrum insecticides in crop fields further enhances populations of the western flower thrips. Interactions with native species clearly limit the abundance of western flower thrips in Florida, but populations are abundant in fertilized crop fields where application of insecticides excludes predators and competitor species.

Effects of fentanyl and sucrose on pain in retinopathy examinations with pain scale,near-infrared spectroscopy,and ultrasonography:a randomized trial

Background This study aimed to compare the efficacy of intravenous,intranasal fentanyl and oral sucrose in reducing the pain response during retinopathy of prematurity examinations using premature infant pain profile(PIPP)*** The study included 42 infants who underwent retinopathy screening *** infants were divided into three groups:oral sucrose,intranasal fentanyl,and intravenous *** signs(heart rate,arterial oxygen saturation,and mean arterial pressure)were *** PIPP was used to determine pain *** oxygenation and middle cerebral artery blood flow were evaluated using near-infrared spectroscopy and Doppler ultrasonography,*** data obtained were compared between *** There was no significant difference between the three groups regarding postconceptional and postnatal ages or birth weights and weight at the time of *** babies had moderate pain during the *** correlation was observed between analgesia method and pain scores(P=0.159).In all three groups,heart rate and mean arterial pressure increased,whereas oxygen saturation decreased during the exam compared with pre-examination ***,heart rate(HR),mean arterial pressure(MAP)and arterial oxygen saturation(sPO2)values did not differ between groups(HR,P=0.150;MAP,P=0.245;sPO2,P=0.140).The cerebral oxygenation(rSO2)values between the three groups were found to be similar[rSO2:P=0.545,P=0.247,P=0.803;fractional tissue oxygen extraction(FTOE):P=0.553,P=0.278].Regarding cerebral blood flow values,we also did not find any difference between the three groups[mean blood flow velocity(Vmean):P=0.569,P=0.975;maximum flow velocity(Vmax):P=0.820,P=0.997].Conclusions Intravenous and intranasal fentanyl and oral sucrose were not superior to each other in preventing pain during the examination for retinopathy of prematurity(ROP).Sucrose may be a good alternative for pain control during ROP *** findings suggest
