The slurry settling characteristics are the most important to design a thickener in process industries. In this work, the iron ore slurry from the screw classifier overflow was used for the settling study. It was observed that the original slurry exhibited a low settling velocity and a turbid supernatant during the settling process. Commercial flocculating agents with anionic, cationic, and nonionic characters were used to improve the settling behavior of suspensions, which were added into the slurry at different ranges of slurry pH values, respectively. The settling results show that the use of flocculants increase the settling rate by several times. Compared with the cationic and non-ionic flocculants, the anionic flocculant is more effective in enhancing the slurry settling rate. The small dose of the anionic flocculant is found to be more effective, but the other flocculants are less effective even at higher dosages. The simulation of an industrial thickener was carried out based on the laboratory settling data, and the appropriate design and selection parameters of the industrial thickener were estimated.

Solid wastes generated by the metallurgical industry contribute significantly towards the enhancement of environmental pollution. The handling, utilization, and safe disposal of these solid wastes are major concerns for the world. Dolochar is such a solid waste generated by the sponge iron industry. Investigations were carried out on the physical, mineralogical, and chemical characteristics for the efficient utilization of dolochar. The detailed studies on physico-chemical properties and petrography were carded out by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction （XRD）, and scanning electron microscopy （SEM）. Characterization studies revealed that the dolochar consists of quartz （free as well as locked）, free lime, Fe particles, and Ca or Mg and/or Ca＋Mg＋Fe oxide phases. The washability data of-300 ~m dolochar samples indicated that clean coal with 41wt% ash at 18% yield can be produced from dolochar with 78wt% ash. The studies further suggested that the liberation of the dolochar is hard to achieve for clear separation. The dolochar is observed to have high ash fusion temperature and the un- burned carbon can be best utilized for power generation.

Na_(0.5)Bi_(0.5)TiO_(3)-based lead-free piezoelectrics are considered for potential replacement of the lead-based commercial piezoceramics in high-power transducer applications.We have examined the role of grain size in influencing the structural-polar inhomogeneity of stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric Na_(0.5)Bi_(0.5)TiO_(3)(NBT),and its morphotropic-phase-boundary(MPB)derivative 0.94Na_(0.5)Bi_(0.5)TiO_(3)-0.06BaTiO_(3)(NBT-6BT).Our study reveals that size effect comes into play in these systems on a very large length scale(on the scale of microns)considerably affecting its global structure and properties.

Rhinosporidiosis is caused by the organism Rhinosporidium seeberi.It is a rare aquatic protistan parasite.Though more prevalent in Asiatic regions,cases have also been reported in European countries.In India,it mostly affects the southern part.Rhinosporidium seeberi most commonly affects the mucous membranes,but can also affect other structures including the larynx,trachea,skin,genitalia,lungs and rectum.The typical presentation is that of a pinkish mass which bleeds profusely.Isolated lacrimal sac rhinosporidiosis is very rare.Computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging are helpful in diagnosis,but histopathological study along with Gomori methenamine silver,periodic acid-Schiff,and potassium chloride are required for confirmation.Its mainstay of treatment is surgery.Prognosis is excellent,but recurrence is not unusual.

Investigation of seismic performance of buildings with STRP (scrap tire rubber pad) seismic isolators by means of pseudo-dynamic tests and numerical simulation is presented. The isolated building is numerically modeled, while the base isolation layer is considered as the experimental substructure in the pseudo-dynamic tests. The test result verifies that the STRP isolator shows acceptable shear deformation performance predicted by the design methods, and demonstrated that seismic isolation using STRP works as a protective measure to provide enhanced seismic performance of the building indicated by the reduction of top floor absolute acceleration, drift and base shear as designated.

Diarrheal diseases are major problem of developing countries. Though precise data on childhood mortality associated with diarrheal diseases in Nepal is not available, it has been estimated that approximately 25% of child death are associated with diarrheal disease, particularly acute diarrhea. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of parasitic pathogens causing acute diarrhea in children under 5 years of age. A total of 525 children with acute diarrhea in a children’s hospital of Kathmandu, Nepal were enrolled between April 2011 and September 2011. The higher prevalence of diarrhea was in the age group of less than 2 years. Out of total 525 enrolled cases, protozoal parasites were found in 10.7% (56/525) of cases and helminthic parasites were found in 1.3% (7/525) of cases. Highest prevalence of 60.3% (38/63) of parasitic infection was found in the age group of 6 - 24 months followed by 7.9% (5/63) in the age group of less than 6 months. Of the total enrolled cases E. histolytica were 6.7% (35/525) followed by Giardial lamblia 3.4% (18/525) and the least frequency was due to A. lumbricoides constituting 0.6% (3/525). The aim of this study was to know the parasitic agents causing acute diarrhea in children.

HIV/AIDS spread has opened a Pandora of medical and health problems apart from creating serious socio-psychological trauma for the victims and their families. Despite the governmental effort to curve the growing infection, very little success has been achieved. The northeastern region of India presents a very peculiar situation due to recurrent insurgency in all its states for long time and thus it became instrumental in paralyzing the social and health machineries to an extent, which still deteriorated the futile national effort to check the deadly infection. The study tried to understand the level of awareness and correct knowledge among the underprivileged scheduled tribes and scheduled castes women in the age group 15 -44 by exploring data from district level of Rapid Household Reproductive and Child Health Project Phase I (1998) and Phase II (1999) for Assam, Manipur and Nagaland and suggested a strategy to control the infection in the region. It is found that HIV/AIDS awareness was 59% among the women in all the three states with very few among them who had correct understanding of its prevention. A pronounced difference in the level of awareness was observed with respect to age, economy and residential status of the respondents.
