Transplanting embryonic stem cells onto damaged human corneal endothelium

AIM To investigate whether human embryonic stem cells(hESCs) could be made to attach, grow and differentiate on a human Descemet's membrane(DM).METHODS Spontaneously differentiated hESCs were transferred onto a human corneal button with the endothelial layer removed using ocular sticks. The cells were cultured on a DM for up to 15 d. The genetically engineered hESC line expressed green fluorescent protein, which facilitated identification during the culture experiments, tissue preparation, and analysis. To detect any differentiation into human corneal endothelial-like cells, we analysed the transplanted cells by immunohistochemistry using specific *** We found transplanted cells form a single layer of cells with a hexagonal shape in the periphery of the DM. The majority of the cells were negative for octamer-binding transcription factor 4 but positive for paired box 6 protein, sodium potassium adenosine triphosphatase(NaKATPase), and Zona Occludens protein 1. In four of the 18 trials, the transplanted cells were found to express CK3, which indicates that the stem cells differentiated into corneal epithelial cells in these cases. CONCLUSION It is possible to get cells originating from hESCs to become established on a human DM, where they grow and differentiate into corneal endothelial-like cells in vitro.

Skid resistance performance and texture lateral distribution within the lanes of asphalt pavements

The skid resistance and pavement texture can vary a lot for different lane paths, meaning that the lateral shift of the vehicle driving in the lane section can affect the safety significantly. On the other hand, a varying skid resistance across a lane section provides the opportunity to influence vehicles to run in lateral positions where the tire/road friction has not yet been reduced by wear; thus, improving safety. This measure would be useful only if the distribution of skid resistance and pavement texture in the lane sections are investigated at frequent *** study focused on four test sections on in-service urban roads. A friction measuring device known as the T2GO system was used to test the skid resistance performance of pavements for both dry and wet conditions. A high-precision 3D-scanner was used to capture the pavement macrotexture, and a microscope was employed to investigate the pavement abrasion. Subsequently, the effect of the lateral variation across the lane of friction and texture was discussed. The feasibility of displacing the vehicles to run in tracks with better skid resistance was explored in terms of the measured friction and the texturedependent drainage capacity. The results indicated that driving closer to the lanes' right side means that better values of friction, texture, and drainage parameters of the unworn pavement surface can be utilized. A 0.3 m or more lateral displacement would create improved friction, in a range between 13% and 14% for 1.5 m track width and between 8% and 11% for 1.65 m track width. Furthermore, the results are useful in studying the vehicles' sideslip.

In most industrialized countries, prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer of men. When detected early, most cases are curable, but for tumors that have metastasized, there is no curative therapy. Pharmaceutical androgen ablation or castration induces remission in most patients with metastatic disease, but if the patient lives long enough, the tumor becomes androgenindependent. In some patients, chemotherapy induces remission, which mostly is of short duration. Therefore, new treatment modalities are needed for androgen-independent prostate cancer.

The ladybird beetle Coccinella septempunctata(L.)is an important biocontrol agent of pests such as various aphid *** being one of the most studied coccinellid species,many aspects of its foraging behavior are still not completely *** study focuses on the diel foraging behavior of ***,investigating their olfactory orientation toward aphid-infested plants,walking activity on plants and on the soil,and feeding *** the scotophase the ladybird beetles were significantly more attracted to the odor of aphid-infested plants,on which they also showed considerably higher walking activity then on uninfested *** were more prone to utilize olfactory cues when searching for prey and fed at higher rates than males;this shows that they are better adapted to nocturnal activity,as they require higher food *** septempunctata have the same feeding rate during the scotophase as in the *** study shows that *** has the potential to forage in the scotophase if prey is *** results support the hypothesis that volatiles of aphid-infested plants can attract or arrest foraging adult ladybird beetles,even in the darkness,which makes a considerable contribution to efficient prey search and enhances feeding capacity.

Predicting Amazon customer reviews with deep confidence using deep learning and conformal prediction

In this investigation,we have shown that the combination of deep learning,including natural language processing,and conformal prediction results in highly predictive and efficient temporal test set sentiment estimates for 12 categories of Amazon product reviews using either in-category predictions,*** model and the test set are from the same review category or cross-category predictions,*** a model of another review category for predicting the test *** similar results from in-and cross-category predictions indicate high degree of generalizability across product review *** investigation also shows that the combination of deep learning and conformal prediction gracefully handles class imbalances without explicit class balancing measures.
