A non-fullerene acceptor enables efficient P3HT-based organic solar cells with small voltage loss and thickness insensitivity

Poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) is a low-cost polymer donor for organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the P3HT-based OSCs usually give low power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) due to the wide bandgap and the high-lying energy levels of P3HT. To solve this problem, in this work, we design and synthesize a new A-D-A type non-fullerene acceptor, DFPCBR, which owns an electron-donating (D) core constructed by linking a 2,5-difluorobenzene ring with two cyclopentadithiophene moieties, and two electron-accepting (A) end-groups of benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole connected with 3-ethyl-2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one. Because of the strong electron-donating ability and large conjugation effect of D core, DFPCBR shows appropriate energy levels and a narrow bandgap matching well with those of P3HT. Therefore, with P3HT as the donor and DFPCBR as the acceptor, the OSCs possess broad absorption range from 350 nm to 780 nm and the reduced energy loss (Eloss) of 0.79 eV (compared with ~1.40 eV for the P3HT:PC61BM device), providing a good PCE of 5.34% with a high open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.80 V. Besides, we observe that the photovoltaic performances of these devices are insensitive to the thickness of the active layers:even if the active layer is as thick as 320 nm,~80%of the best PCE is maintained, which is rarely reported for fullerene-free P3HT-based OSCs, suggesting that DFPCBR has the potential application in commercial OSCs in the future.

A fused-ring electron acceptor IDT-2BR1 based on indacenodithiophene core with hexyl side-chains flanked by benzothiadiazole rhodanine was designed and synthesized.In comparison with its counterpart with hexylphenyl side-chains(IDT-2BR),IDT-2BR1exhibits higher highest occupied molecular orbital(HOMO)energy but similar lowest unoccupied molecular orbital(LUMO)energy(IDT-2BR1:HOMO=-5.37eV,LUMO=-3.67eV;IDT-2BR:HOMO=-5.52eV,LUMO=-3.69eV),red-shifted absorption and narrower bandgap.IDT-2BR1 has higher electron mobility(2.2×10^(-3)cm^2 V^(-1)s^(-1))than IDT-2BR(3.4×10^(-4)cm^2 V^(-1)s^(-1))due to the reduced steric hindrance and ordered molecular packing.Fullerene-free organic solar cells based on PTB7-Th:IDT-2BRl yield power conversion efficiencies up to 8.7%,higher than that of PTB7-Th:IDT-2BR(7.7%),with a high open circuit voltage of0.95 V and good device stability.

To achieve the red-shifted absorptions and appropriate energy levels of A-D-A type non-fullerene acceptors(NFAs), in this work, we design and synthesize two new NFAs, named TPDCIC and TPDCNC, whose electron-donating(D) unit is constructed by a thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione(TPD) core attached to two cyclopentadithiophene(CPDT) moieties at both sides, and the electronaccepting(A) end-groups are 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)malononitrile(IC) and 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1 H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalen-1-ylidene)malononitrile(NC), respectively. Benefiting from TPD core, which easily forms quinoid structure and O···H or O···S intramolecular noncovalent interactions, TPDCIC and TPDCNC show more delocalization of π-electrons and perfect planar molecular geometries, giving the absorption ranges extended to 822 and 852 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the highest occupied molecular orbital(HOMO) levels of TPDCIC and TPDCNC remain relatively low-lying due to the electronegativity of the carbonyl groups on TPD core. Considering that the absorptions and energy levels of the two NFAs match well with those of a widely used polymer donor, PBDB-T, we fabricate two kinds of organic solar cells(OSCs) based on the PBDB-T:TPDCIC and PBDB-T:TPDCNC blended films, respectively. Through a series of optimizations, the TPDCIC-based devices yield an impressing power conversion efficiency(PCE)of 10.12% with a large short-circuit current density(JSC) of 18.16 mA·cm-2, and the TPDCNC-based ones exhibit a comparable PCE of9.80% with a JSC of 17.40 mA·cm-2. Our work is the first report of the TPD-core-based A-D-A type NFAs, providing a good reference for the molecular design of high-performance NFAs.

A biosynthetic gene cluster for the bioactive fungal sesterterpenoids variecolin(1)and variecolactone(2)was identified in Aspergillus aculeatus ATCC 16872.Heterologous production of 1 and 2 was achieved in Aspergillus oryzae by expressing the sesterterpene synthase VrcA and the cytochrome P450 VrcB.Intriguingly,the replacement of VrcB with homologous P450s from other fungal terpenoid pathways yielded three new variecolin analogues(5-7).Analysis of the compounds’anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo revealed that although 5 and 1 had comparable activities,5 was associated with significantly reduced toxic side effects in cancer-bearing mice,indicating its potentially broader therapeutic window.Our study describes the first tests of variecolin and its analogues in animals and demonstrates the utility of synthetic biology for creating molecules with improved biological activities.

Objective To report the experience in sperm extraction from testicular biopsies (TESE) performed from March 1996 to July 1998 in men with non obstructive azoospermia (NOA) Methods Comparisons of age, volume of both testes, serum FSH and testosterone in men, and histology of testicular samples in the first cycles between cycles with spermatozoa found and those without spermatozoa found were performed Comparisons of fertilization, cleavage and pregnancy rates between cycles with spermatozoa injected and those with spermatids injected were performed Results Spermatozoa were found in only 12 out of 26 first TESE cycles (46 2%) and other cycles had spermatids (round cells) only Age of men, history of mumps orchitis/oligozoospermia, volume of both testes and serum FSH/testosterone levels in men were not significantly different between cycles with and without spermatozoa The fertilization rate was significantly higher in cycles with spermatozoa injected than those with round cell injections (63 3% vs 23 2%, P <0 0001, Chi squared test) The pregnancy rate was 14 3% per cycle when spermatozoa were injected Conclusions TESE followed by Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an effective treatment in patients with NOA Less than half of the patients undergoing TESE had spermatozoa recovered Age of men, volume of both testes and serum FSH/ testosterone levels in men were not useful in predicting successful recovery Compared to using ejaculated and epididymal spermatozoa, fertilization and pregnancy rates were achieved when testicular spermatozoa were used for ICSI

Lycium barbarum is a widely used Chinese herbal medicine prescription for protection of optic nerve.However,it remains unclear regarding the effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides,the main component of Lycium barbarum,on in vivo proliferation of adult ciliary body cells.In this study,adult rats were intragastrically administered low-and high-dose Lycium barbarum polysaccharides（1 and 10 mg/kg）for 35 days and those intragastrically administered phosphate buffered saline served as controls.The number of ki-67-positive cells in rat ciliary body in the Lycium barbarum polysaccharides groups,in particular low-dose Lycium barbarum polysaccharides group,was significantly greater than that in the phosphate buffered saline group.ki-67-positive rat ciliary body cells expressed nestin but they did not express glial fibrillary acidic protein.These findings suggest that Lycium barbarum polysaccharides can promote the proliferation of adult rat retinal progenitor cells and the proliferated cells present with neuronal phenotype.

How to secure the connection between thoracostomy tube and drainage system?

BACKGROUND: Thoracostomy tube insertion is one of the common bedside procedures in emergency medicine and many acute specialties. Dislodgement of thoracostomy tube from the connection tube of chest drainage system is an important problem with potential complications such as contamination, infection and pneumothorax. Besides, mere loosening can also lead to malfunction. It is a common practice to tape the connection of the system. This study aimed to evaluate the materials and methods of connection of chest drain system to minimize drainage dislodgement. METHODS: We conducted an experimental study to assess the tightness of the connection with various taping materials and methods. We selected three commonly used adhesive materials(3M^(tm) Transpore^(tm) Medical tape, 3M^(tm) Micropore^(tm) Medical tape, 3M^(tm) Soft Cloth Tape on Liner) and three different methods(cross method, straight method, nylon band) to secure the junction between the thoracostomy tube and the bi-conical adaptor in the drainage system. The measured outcome was the weight causing visible loosening of the junction between thoracotomy tube and the adaptor.RESULTS: For each taping material and taping method, 10 trials were performed. The median weight required to disconnect the junction is 26.22 lb for Transpore^(tm), 31.29 lb for Micropore^(tm) and 32.44 lb for Soft Cloth Tape on Liner. A smaller force was required to disconnect if Transpore^(tm) is used(P<0.001). There was no statistical signifi cant difference between Micropore^(tm) and Soft Cloth Tape on Liner(P=0.98). The median disconnecting force is 32.44 lb for straight taping method, 40.55 lb for cross taping method and 21.15 lb for plastic band. The cross-taping method was the more secure method(P<0.0001 when compared with plastic band)(P=0.033 when compared with straight method).CONCLUSION: Cross-taping is the most secure method among the tested varieties in connecting the thoracostomy tube to the chest drainage system. Transpore^(tm) is not a recommended material for thoracostomy tub
