The Dongcaohe ophiolite from the North Qilian Moun-tains: A fossil oceanic crust of the Paleo-Qilian ocean

The Dongcaohe ophiolite, located at the south of the North Qilian subduction complexes, is a tectonic block with an exposed area of about 3 km×6 km. It consists of an intrusive section overlain by an ex- trusive section. The lower part of the intrusive section consists of cyclic layers of cumulate dunites, troctolites, anorthosites, anorthositic gabbros, and gabbros with small discordant dunite and troctolite bodies. This layered sequence grades upward to isotropic gabbros and gabbronorites, which are overlain by the extrusive sequence of diabasic sheeted dikes and basaltic lavas. The overall mineral crystallization sequence was olivine±Cr-spinel, plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, and Fe-Ti oxides. The Cr-spinel (Mg#: 42-66, Cr#: 41-57) in these layered cumulates and present-day abyssal peridotites have similar compositions. Also, the compositional variations of the plagioclase and cli- nopyroxene in the intrusive section reflect crystallization from melts compositionally similar to the present-day ocean basalts. Moreover, the rare earth element (REE) and multi-element distribution pat- terns of the intrusive and extrusive lithologies in the Dongcaohe ophiolite are consistent with crystal- lization of mid-ocean ridge basalts. The zircon grains separated from the gabbronorite have an SHRIMP average 206Pb/238U weighted age of 497 ± 7 Ma, which is considered as the tectonic emplacement age of the Dongcaohe ophiolite. The field occurrence, mineral and whole-rock compositions indicate that the Dongcaohe ophiolite represents a well-persevered oceanic crustal fragment composed of a complete oceanic crustal section of layered cumulates at bottom upgrading through isotropic cumulates to sheeted dikes and lava flows.

Synchrotron refractive-index microradiography of human liver cancer tissue

Three human liver tissue samples (～5 mm × 40 mm × 20 mm) were excised from a cancer patient's liver during surgery. The microradiology analysis was performed with a non-standard approach on a synchrotron. High-resolution refractive-index edge-enhanced microradiographs that cover a larger volume of the liver tissue sample were obtained. The cancer tissue and normal tissue could be clearly identified and distinguished based on their different textures. Furthermore, new blood vessel hyperplasia was found near the cancer area. Blood vessels with a diameter smaller than 20 μm could be identified. These findings were fully consistent with the histopathological examination of the same area. Microradiographs of the newly formed blood vessels at different angles were also obtained. This result shows that it is possible to further develop this approach into a technique of microradiographic imaging for clinic diagnosis of liver cancer at the early stage.

Climate change has altered locally singletype disasters to large-scale compound disasters because of increasing intensity and frequency of extreme rainfall *** compound disasters can combine small-scale floods,debris flows,shallow landslides,deep-seated landslides,and landslide lakes into a large-scale single disaster *** simulation models and evaluation tools are available for single-type disasters,no single model is well developed for compound disasters due to the difficulty of handling the interrelationship between two successive single-type *** study proposes a structure for linking available single-type simulation models to evaluate compound disasters and provides a useful tool of decision making for warning and planning of disaster reduction.

The Covalent Binding of Genistein to the Non-prosthetic-heme-moiety of Bovine Lactoperoxidase Leads to Enzymatic Inactivation

Objective Genistein, a major soy isoflavone metabolite （SIF）, inactivates oxidation activity of bovine lactoperoxidase （LPO）. Modification of the heme moiety of LPO by nitrogen-containing compounds has been shown to inactivate LPO. In contrast, SIF mediated inactivation of LPO does not involve a heme modification and the mechanism of SIF inhibition is poorly understood. Methods After inactivation of LPO by genistein in the presence of H202, trypsin-digested LPO peptide fragments were collected and analyzed by MALDI-TOF-MS to characterize the chemical binding of genistein（s） to LPO. Results The heme moiety of LPO was not modified by genistein. A covalent binding study showed that 3H-genistein bound to LPO with a ratio of ~12 to 1. After HPLC analysis and peak collection, trypsin-digested peptide fragments were analyzed by MALDI-TOF-MS. The 3H-genistein co-eluted peptide fragments （RT=24 min） were putatively identified as 1991VGYLDEEGVLDQNR214 with two bound genistein molecules or a genistein dimer （2 259 Da）, 486TPDNIDIWlGGNAEPMVER504 with two bound genistein molecules or a genistein dimer （2 663 Da）, and 161ARWLPAEYEDGLALPFGWTQR182 with three bound genistein molecules or a genistein trimer （3 060 Da）. The fragment with a mass of 2 792 Da （RT=36 min） was identified as 132CDENSPYR139 with three genistein molecules or a genistein trimer. Conclusions The results suggest that LPO was inactivated by irreversible covalent binding of genistein or genistein polymers to particular peptide fragments constituting regions of the outward domain. No genistein interaction with the prosthetic heme moiety of LPO was observed.

Improvement of fuel consumption and maintenance of heating furnaces using a modified heating pattern

This article studies the transient heat conduction in a slab when passing through various sections of the furnace, and focuses on the thickness of the scale layer formed on the slab. The transient heat conduction behavior of a slab in various sections of the heating furnace is analyzed using the Laplace transformation method, including the pre-heating zone, the first heating zone, the second heating zone, and the soaking zone. The heating pattern of the furnace is then modified to reduce fuel consumption. The simulation results show that the scale layer formed on the slab significantly influences the quality of the hot rolled coil formed, and how the furnace parameters affect the efficiency of the furnace and the quality of the coil.

NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF SCOUR AND DEPOSITION IN A CHANNEL NETWORK

A numerical model, which is capable of simulating scouring and deposition behaviors in a channel network, is developed in this study. The model treats suspended load and bed load separately, and hence is able to simulate the depositional behavior of the suspended sediment under a nonequilibrium process. The model solves the de Saint Venant equation, and thus can be applied to unsteady flow conditions. An internal boundary condition based on the sediment transport capacity was proposed to distribute the incoming sediment load into the downstream links. An assessment of this model's performance has been conducted through a comparison to an analytical solution. The application of this model to the Tanhsui River system in Taiwan, and several hydraulic model studies gave very convincing results.

Strain measurement of fiber optic sensor surface bonding on host material

Fiber optic sensor has been widely used as a structural health monitoring device by either embedding into or surface bonding onto the structures. The strain of optic fiber induced by the host material is strongly dependent on the bonding characteristics which include the protective coating, adhesive layer and the length of bonding. The strains between the fiber optics and host structure are not exact the same. The existence of the protective coating and adhesive layer would affect the strain measured by the surface bonding optic sensor. The analytical expression of the strain in the optic fiber induced by the host material was presented. The results were validated by the finite element method. The theoretical predictions reveal that the strain in the optical fiber is lower than the strain of host material. Parametric study shows that a long bonding length and high modulus of protective coating would increase the percentage of strain transferring into the optical fiber. Experiments were conducted by using Mach-Zehnder interferometer to measure the strain of the surface bonding optic fiber induced by the host structure. Good agreements were observed in comparison with the experimental results and theoretical predictions.

Virus-induced asthma is prevalent among children,but its underlying mechanisms are *** evidence indicates that early-life respiratory virus infection increases susceptibility to allergic ***,the relationship between systemic virus infections,such as enterovirus infection,and the ensuing effects on allergic asthma development is ***-life enterovirus infection was correlated with higher risks of allergic diseases in *** mice exhibited exacerbated mite allergen-induced airway inflammation following recovery from EV-A71 infection in the neonatal *** marrow-derived macrophages(BMDMs)from recovered EV-A71-infected mice showed sustained innate immune memory(trained immunity)that could drive naïve T helper cells toward Th2 and Th17 cell differentiation when in contact with *** transfer of EV-A71-trained BMDMs induced augmented allergic inflammation in naïve recipient mice,which was inhibited by 2-deoxy-D-glucose(2-DG)pretreatment,suggesting that trained macrophages following enterovirus infection are crucial in the progression of allergic asthma later in life.
