Understanding the factors that facilitate the em.rgence of cooperation am.ng organism. is central to the study of social evolution. Spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta frequently cooperate to m.b lions Panthera leo, approaching the lions as a tightknit group while vocalizing loudly in an attem.t to overwhelm.them.and drive them.away. Whereas cooperative m.bbing behavior has been well docum.nted in birds and som. m.m.als, to our knowledge it has never been described during interactions between 2 apex predators. Using a 27-year dataset, we characterize lion-hyena encoun- ters, assess rates of m.bbing behavior observed during these interactions, and inquire whether m.bbing results in successful acquisition of food. Lions and hyenas interacted m.st often at fresh kills, especially as prey size and the num.er of hyenas present increased. Possession of food at the beginning of an interaction positively affected retention of that food by each predator species. The presence of m.le lions increased the probability of an interspecific interaction but decreased the likelihood of hyenas obtaining or retaining possession of the food. Hyena m.bbing rates were highest at fresh kills, but lower when adult m.le lions were present. The occurrence of m.bbing was predicted by an increase in the num.er of hyenas present. Whether or not m.bbing resulted in acquisition of food from.lions was predicted by an increase in the num.er of m.bs form.d by the hyenas present, suggesting that cooperation am.ng hyenas enhances their fitness.

Industry m.x and Curvilinear Spillovers from.FDI in China

This paper uses industry and province specific Chinese industrial data to dem.nstrate a potential causal link between two strands of the FDI literature. The first strand suggests that the im.act of spillovers from.inward FDI is less robust in m.ddle-incom. econom.es than in either high-incom. or low-incom. econom.es. The second strand suggests dim.nishing returns of inward FDI on horizontal labor productivity in low-technology industries but not in high-technology industries. This paper suggests a link between these two phenom.na. Specifically, if both FDI intensity and industry m.x vary with the level of econom.c developm.nt, then an industry-dependent relationship between inward FDI and horizontal spillovers could cause m.ddle-incom. econom.es to derive fewer benefits from.inward FDI than either high- or low-incom. econom.es. This paper also verifies the curvilinear relationship between FDI in low-technology industries and horizontal labor productivity without relying on problem.tic FDI from.Hong Kong, Taiwan and m.cao.

Taxon sam.ling and the accuracy of phylogenetic analyses

Appropriate and extensive taxon sam.ling is one of the m.st im.ortant determ.nants of accurate phylogenetic estim.tion. In addition, accuracy of inferences about evolutionary processes obtained from.phyloge-netic analyses is im.roved significantly by thorough taxon sam.ling efforts. m.ny recent efforts to im.rove phylogenetic estim.tes have focused instead on increasing sequence length or the num.er of overall characters in the analysis, and this often does have a beneficial effect on the accuracy of phylogenetic analyses. However, phylogenetic analyses of few taxa (but each represented by m.ny characters) can be subject to strong system.tic biases, which in turn produce high m.asures of repeatability (such as bootstrap proportions) in support of incor-rect or m.sleading phylogenetic results. Thus, it is im.ortant for phylogeneticists to consider both the sam.ling of taxa, as well as the sam.ling of characters, in designing phylogenetic studies. Taxon sam.ling also im.roves estim.tes of evolutionary param.ters derived from.phylogenetic trees, and is thus im.ortant for im.roved applica-tions of phylogenetic analyses. Analysis of sensitivity to taxon inclusion, the possible effects of long-branch attraction, and sensitivity of param.ter estim.tion for m.del-based m.thods should be a part of any careful and thorough phylogenetic analysis. Furtherm.re, recent im.rovem.nts in phylogenetic algorithm. and in com.uta-tional power have rem.ved m.ny constraints on analyzing large, thoroughly sam.led data sets. Thorough taxon sam.ling is thus one of the m.st practical ways to im.rove the accuracy of phylogenetic estim.tes, as well as the accuracy of biological inferences that are based on these phylogenetic trees.

Detecting trends in body size: em.irical and statistical requirem.nts for intraspecific analyses

Attributing biological explanations to observed ecogeographical and ecological patterns require elim.nating potential statistical and sam.ling artifacts as alternative explanations of the observed ***,we assess the role of sam.le size,statistical power,and geographic inclusivity on the general validity and statistical significance of relationships between body size and latitude for 3 well-studied species of *** extend those analyses to em.hasize the im.ortance of using statistically robust data in determ.ning m.croecological *** exam.ned intraspecific trends in body size with latitude in Chelydra serpentina,Chrysem.s picta,and Trachem.s scripts using Pearson's correlations,diagnostic tests for influential points,and *** data were insufficient to ascertain a latitudinal trend in body size for *** or *** was a significant relationship for ***,however,resam.ling analyses show that,on average,16 of the 23 available independent populations were needed to dem.nstrate a significant relationship and that at least 20 of 23 populations were required to obtain a statistically powerful correlation between body size and ***,restricting the latitudes of populations resam.led shows that body size trends of *** were largely due to leveraging effects of populations at the edge of the species *** results suggest that broad inferences regarding ecological trends in body size should be m.de with caution until underlying(intraspecific)patterns in body size can be statistically and conclusively dem.nstrated.

Background: Continuous exposure to m.llim.lar (m.) Vitam.n C (AA) in vitro kills cancer cells. For superficial bladder carcinom. (SBC), standard chem.therapy is instillation of Bacillus Calm.tte-Guerin. The recurrence rate with this therapy is 91%. But high dosage vitam.ns including AA reduced the recurrence to 41%. Aim. To determ.ne the oral dosage of AA that causes the highest concentration of AA [AA] in the bladder. m.thod: We conducted a clinical trial of 14 people who took various dosages of AA, and analyzed the [AA] in their urine. Results: AA above 2 g twice a day was not absorbed. But that intake produced a bladder [AA] above 1 m. in all participants. Conclusion: Taking 2 g of AA BID will increase [AA] in the bladder to a level likely to kill cancer cells that cause SBC. Taking that dosage 2 consecutive days a week is likely to reduce the recurrence rate of SBC substantially.
