Synthesis of Hexagonal Boron Carbonitride without Nitrogen Void Defects

The synthesis and structure of hexagonal boron carbonitride (h-BCN) film on polycrystalline diamond surface were reported. Polycrystalline diamond and/or diamond-like carbon were first fabricated on Si (100) and then diamond like carbon was used as substrate. The deposition was performed by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. In order to reduce the content of nitrogen void defects, the deposition was performed at the high temperature of 950°C under the working pressure of 2.6 Pa. The typical sample with atomic composition of B31 C37 N26 O6 in the h-BCN lattice was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The fine structure of the film was studied by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements. The B K-edge and N K-edge of NEXAFS spectra revealed that the synthesized h-BCN film had the ideal honeycomb- like BN3 configuration without nitrogen void defects.

Susceptibility of Aedes flavopictus miyarai and Aedes galloisi mosquito species in Japan to dengue type 2 virus

Objective: To evaluate the potential of local mosquitoes to act as vectors for dengue transmission in ***: Serotype 2 Th NH28/93 was used to test the dengue susceptibility profiles of Aedes flavopictus miyarai(Ae. f. miyarai), Aedes galloisi(Ae. galloisi) and Aedes albopictus(***), which were collected in Japan. We used Aedes aegypti from Thailand as a positive control. The mosquitoes were infected with the virus intrathoracically or orally. At 10 or 14 days post infection, the mosquitoes were dissected and total RNA was extracted from their abdomens, thoraxes, heads and legs. Mosquito susceptibility to dengue virus was evaluated using RT-PCR with dengue virus-specific primers. Differences in the infection and mortality rates of the different mosquito species were tested using Fisher's exact probability ***: The infection rates for dengue virus administered intrathoracically to Ae. f. miyarai,Ae. galloisi and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were identical by RT-PCR on Day 10 post *** of the body parts we tested were RT-PCR-positive for dengue virus. For the orally administered virus, the infection rates in the different body parts of the Ae. f. miyarai mosquitoes were slightly higher than those of Ae. albopictus mosquitoes, but were similar to the control mosquitoes(P > 0.05). The mortality rates for Ae. f. miyarai and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes were similar(P = 0.19). Our data indicated that dengue virus was able to replicate and disseminate to secondary infection sites in all of the four mosquito species(Japanese and Thai).Conclusions: Ae. albopictus is a well-known candidate for dengue transmission in Japan. However, our data suggest that Ae. f. miyarai from Ishigaki Island(near Okinawa Island) and Ae. galloisi from Hokkaido(Northern Japan) should also be regarded as potential vectors for dengue transmission in these regions. Further studies on these mosquitoes should be conducted.

Magnetic properties and thermal stability of anisotropic bonded Nd-Fe-B magnets by warm compaction

Anisotropic bonded magnets were prepared by warm compaction using anisotropic Nd-Fe-B powder. The forming process, magnetic properties, and temperature stability were studied. The results indicate that the optimal temperature of the process, which was decided by the vis-cosity of the binders, was 110°C. With increasing pressure, the density of the magnets increased. When the pressure was above 700 MPa, the powder particles were destroyed and the magnetic properties decreased. The magnetic properties of the anisotropic bonded magnets were as follows： remanence Br=0.98 T, intrinsic coercivity iHc=1361 kA/m, and maximum energy product BHmax=166 kJ/m3. The magnets had excellent thermal stability because of the high coercivity and good squareness of demagnetization curves. The flux density of the magnets was 35% higher than that of isotropic bonded Nd-Fe-B magnets at 120°C for 1000 h. The flux density of the bonded magnets showed little change with regard to temperature.

Improving Flow Property of Nifedipine Loaded Solid-Lipid Nanoparticles by Means of Silica for Oral Solid Dosage Form

In this study, a new formulation of silica nanocomposite containing nifedipine (NI) loaded freeze-dried solid-lipid nanoparticles (NI-SLNs) and silica have been developed with improved flowability of powders, which can lead to the formulation of a widely acceptable oral dosage form. The stable NI-SLNs were prepared using two phospholipids, hydrogenated soybean phosphatidylcholine and dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol mixed with 2.5% w/v trehalose as a cryoprotectant followed by lyophilization. We employed various grades of two types of silica, such as fumed and precipitated. Silica improved the poor flow property of NI-SLNs to good category as per USP-29. In addition, most of the silica nanocomposites showed the satisfactory results in their physicochemical properties such as particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and recovered potency by around 100 nm, 0.3, -50 mV, and 80%, respectively. Furthermore, it was found that NI-SLNs were easily released form nanocomposites within 30 min, therefore, suggesting an improvement of drug dissolutions. Among them, precipitated silica cooperated fairly in improving the powder characteristics as well as the physicochemical, morphological, and pharmaceutical properties.

Although it is well known that the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an ominous complication in patients with liver cirrhosis, there has been no approved drug to prevent the development of HCC to date. We previously reported that the combined treatment of vitamin K2 (VK) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I) significantly suppressed the experimental hepatocarcinogenesis. A 66-year-old Japanese woman with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver cirrhosis developed a dysplastic nodule in the liver detected by enhanced computed tomography along with elevation of the tumor markers, namely, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and lectin-reactive demarcation (AFP-L3), suggesting the presence of latent HCC. After oral administration of VK and ACE-I, the serum levels of both AFP and AFP-L3 gradually decreased without any marked alteration of the serum aminotransferase activity. After one-year treatment, not only the serum levels of AFP and AFP-L3 returned to the normal ranges, but also the dysplastic nodule disappeared. Since both VK and ACE-I are widely used without serious side effects, this combined regimen may become a new strategy for chemoprevention against HCC.

AIM: To elucidate the possible crosstalk between angiogenesis, cytokeratin-18 (CK-18), and insulin resistance (IR) especially in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with NASH and 11 with simple fatty liver disease (FL) were enrolled in this study and underwent clinicopathological examination. The measures of angiogenesis, CK-18, and IR employed were CD34-immunopositive vessels, CK-18immunopositive cells, and homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR), respectively. The correlations of these factors with NASH were ***: Significant development of hepatic neovascularization was observed only in NASH, whereas almost no neovascularization could be observed in FL and healthy liver. The degree of angiogenesis was almost parallel to liver fibrosis development, and both parameters were positively correlated. Similarly, CK-18expression and HOMA-R were signifi cantly increased in NASH as compared with FL and healthy liver. Furthermore, CK-18 and HOMA-IR were also positively correlated with the degree of neovascularization. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the crosstalk between angiogenesis, CK-18, and IR may play an important role in the onset and progression of NASH.

Evaluation of Fever and Its Related Factors during 4 Weeks after Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty

The purpose of this study was to describe the incidence and characteristics of postoperative fever (POF;≥38℃) and clarify the correlation between POF and febrile-related factors during 4 weeks after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). A total of 56 patients were included in the study (67 THAs). The preoperative diagnosis for all patients was osteoarthritis. The average follow-up period was 90 months. No patients developed deep infection during the follow-up period. The maximum mean peak daily temperature was 37.7℃ on the day of the surgery and the next day. Fifty-two percent of patients experienced POF, with most developing a maximum temperature (MT) on the day of surgery and the latest occurring by postoperative day (POD) 3. Only C-reactive protein (R = 0.384, p = 0.001) among the febrile-related factors had a weak correlation with MT. Four hips showed a POF of >38℃ later than POD 7;all four of these patients were diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. POF is common and may be part of a normal inflammatory response to tissue injury after THA. More than half of patients may develop POF within 1 week, with most developing MT on POD 0 and the latest occurring by POD 3. In addition, urinary tract infections might be an initial reason for POF in the subsequent 3 weeks.

Relationship between Perceived Health Status and Health Practices in the General Adult Population in Japan

The objective of this study was to explore the relationship of perceived health status and Breslow’s seven health Practices(7 - 8 hours of sleep per night, maintaining a healthy weight, moderate or no alcohol intake, regular physical activity, no eating between meals, eating breakfast, and having never smoked cigarettes) in adult residents in Kumamoto Prefecture Japan. We used 2011 data from the “Health Japan 21” program in Kumamoto Prefecture, a study consisting of 2519 adults aged from 20 - 74 years. Data for the study were gathered by questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into following sections: perceived health status, seven health practices, life satisfaction, depression, social network, and demographic variables. We found that those groups engaged in more than four health practices had higher scores for perceived health status than those groups with less than four. Using Pearson’s correlation coefficient, positive correlations were found between perceived health status and health practices (r = 0.229, p – 0.058, p – 0.093, p– 0.109, p < 0.001). Furthermore, we clarified the differences in perceived health status by age and gender. The data from multiple regression analysis show an association between level of perceived health status and life satisfaction, the seven health practices, employment, age, depression, and social network. Our findings demonstrate a relationship between perceived health status and the seven health practices, and can be used to encourage healthier practices to enhance perceived health status and life satisfaction in community health care work.
