Neuronal guidance genes in health and diseases

Neurons migrate from their birthplaces to the destinations,and extending axons navigate to their synaptic targets by sensing various extracellular cues in spatiotemporally controlled *** evolutionally conserved guidance cues and their receptors regulate multiple aspects of neural development to establish the highly complex nervous system by mediating both short-and long-range cell-cell *** guidance genes(encoding cues,receptors,or downstream signal transducers)are critical not only for development of the nervous system but also for synaptic maintenance,remodeling,and function in the adult *** emerging theme is the combinatorial and complementary functions of relatively limited classes of neuronal guidance genes in multiple processes,including neuronal migration,axonal guidance,synaptogenesis,and circuit ***,neuronal guidance genes also regulate cell migration and cell-cell communications outside the nervous *** are just beginning to understand how cells integrate multiple guidance and adhesion signaling inputs to determine overall cellular/subcellular behavior and how aberrant guidance signaling in various cell types contributes to diverse human diseases,ranging from developmental,neuropsychiatric,and neurodegenerative disorders to cancer *** review classic studies and recent advances in understanding signaling mechanisms of the guidance genes as well as their roles in human ***,we discuss the remaining chalienges and therapeutic potentials of modulating neuronal guidance pathways in neural repair.

Highly Efficient Hybrid White Tandem Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with MoO3 Layer

Electroluminescence （EL） characteristics have been studied for a hybrid tandem white organic light emitting diode （OLED） with a blue emitting fluorescent EL1 unit based on BCzVBi and a yellow emitting phosphorescent EL2 unit based on （fbi）2Ir（acac）, where a MoO3 layer is inserted between EL1 and EL2 units as charge generation layer （CGL）. Maximum current and power efficiencies of 68.1 cd/A and 29.2 lm/W were obtained, respectively, while the current and power efficiencies at luminance of 1000 cd/m2 were 68.0 cd/A and 24.6 lm/W. The yellow emission appears from about 4.5 V firstly, while the blue emission starts to appear from about 5.4 V. It was found that charge generation from CGL of MoO3/NPB bilayer occurred at high voltages of above 5.4 V but not at low voltages below 5.2 V.

Optical-transition Probability of Tm^(3+) Ions in Tm^(3+)/Er^(3+):YVO_4 Crystal

The polarized absorption spectra of Tm3+/Er3+:YVO4 crystal were measured at room temperature. Based on the Judd-Ofelt theory, the spectral parameters were obtained: the intensity parameters Wl of Tm3+ in Tm/Er:YVO4 crystal: W2 = 10.69×10-20, W4 = 0.604×10-20, W6 = 2.05×10-20 cm2 for the (100) face and W2 = 10.43×10-20, W4 = 0.13×10-20, W6 = 1.83×10-20 cm2 for the (001) face. Based on these values, the oscillator strength, radioactive lifetime and fluorescence branch ratio were calculated for Tm3+ in Tm/Er:YVO4 crystal.

Red Light-Induced Phytochrome Relocation into the Nucleus in Adiantum capillus-veneris

Phytochromes in seed plants are known to move into nuclei in a red light-dependent manner with or without interacting factors. Here, we show phytochrome relocation to the nuclear region in phytochrome-dependent Adiantum capillus-veneris spore germination by partial spore-irradiation experiments. The nuclear or non-nuclear region of imbibed spores was irradiated with a microbeam of red and/or far-red light and the localization of phytochrome involved in spore germination was estimated from the germination rate. The phytochrome for spore germination existed throughout whole spore under darkness after imbibition, but gradually migrated to the nuclear region following red light irradiation. In- tracellular distribution of PHY-GUS fusion proteins expressed in germinated spores by particle bombardment showed the migration of Acphy2, but not Acphyl, into nucleus in a red light-dependent manner, suggesting that Acphy2 is the photoreceptor for fern spore germination.

Simultaneous enhancement of efficiency and stability of OLEDs with thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials by modifying carbazoles with peripheral groups

Albeit their high efficiencies, the operational stability of the organic light emitting diodes(OLEDs) based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF) emitters is still far from satisfaction, and few strategies have been proposed to improve their stability. Here, we show that by modifying the carbazole unit, one of the most commonly used donors in TADF emitters, with peripheral groups, both the device efficiency and operational stability can be greatly improved. Awell-known TADF molecule—4,5-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phthalonitrile(2CzPN) was chosen as the prototype and modified by introducing peripheral tert-butyl and phenyl groups to the 3,6-positions of the carbazole(named 2tBuCzPN and 2PhCzPN, respectively). The introduced groups not only improve the compounds' electrochemical stabilities referred to the cyclic voltammetry multi-sweep results, but also promote their photoluminescence quantum yields. Furthermore, reduced singlet-triplet energy gaps are observed, leading to the shortened exciton lifetimes which are benefit to suppress the exciton annihilations. Besides, the steric hindrance of introduced phenyl groups can partly restrain the concentration quenching of the TADF emitter. Consequently, OLEDs based on 2tBuCzPN and 2PhCzPN achieved improved maximum external quantum efficiencies(EQEs) of 17.0% and 14.0%, respectively(compared to 8.5% for 2CzPN). Meanwhile, 2PhCzPN based OLED showed reduced roll-off characteristics and a longer lifetime of 7.8 times higher than that of 2CzPN, testifying the effectiveness of subtle modification of the unstable moieties in simultaneous enhancement of efficiency and stability of OLEDs based on TADF emitters.

Investigation of emission properties of Tm^(3+) :Y_2O_3 transparent ceramic

A transparent and emitting ceramic of Y203 doped with 6% Tm3＋ ions is fabricated by vacuum sintering with ZrO2. Absorption, photoluminescence （PL）, and PL excitation （PLE） spectra are investigated in a spectral range of 200 to 2 100 nm at various temperatures between 296 and 12 K. Intense emission band appears at 450 to 465 nm in the visible range. Near-infrared emission bands are observed at 1 200 to 1 300 nm and 1400 to 1 550 nm, with intense peaks at 1270, 1450, and 1 523 nm. The luminescence mechanisms and potential applications of the emissions are discussed with the help of Judd-Ofelt theory and PLE spectra.

Temperature effect on emission spectra and fluorescence lifetime of the ~4I_(13/2) state of Er^(3+)-doped Gd_2SiO_5 crystal

By measuring the emission spectra and the fluorescence lifetime of the ^4I13/2 state of Er^3＋ ions in Gd2SiO5 crystal at different temperatures, the effects of temperature on the spectra and the lifetime of the ^4I13/2 state are investigated. When the temperature increases, the emission line width for the ^4I13/2 →^4I15/2 transition is broadened, and the main emission lines at 1 596, 1 609, and 1 644 nm shifte toward shorter wavelengths. The measured lifetime of the ^4I13/2 state decreases from 13.2 to 8.4 ms with temperature increase from 13 to 300 K, which is mainly due to the temperature dependence of multiphonon relaxation between the ^4I13/2 and ^4I15/2 states and the changing population distribution among the Stark levels within the ^4I13/2 state. The experimental results imply that low temperature condition is better for the -l.6μm laser output.

Method for the proposal and evaluation of urban structures for compact cities using an expert system

The world population is continually increasing, but the Japanese population is decreasing. By 2050, the Japanese population is calculated to be close to 100 million people, and by 2060, 40% of the Japanese are estimated to be aged 65 years or more. Data show an increase in the declining birth and aging rates of the population. The development of high-concentration urban structures will be needed to solve such problems. However, a detailed vision of the future is yet to be clarified and in the process of consideration. In this study, we developed an instrument called ＂Population Migration Tool,＂ which is based on plural planning and policy, after we formed a future population distribution model. In addition, We also established a high- concentration urban structure model with this tool with the aim of considering the kind of urban structure local cities should target in the future.
