Biomimetic Hydroxyapatite Coated Titanium Screws Demonstrate Rapid Implant Stabilization and Safe Removal In-Vivo

The early fixation of bone screws after surgical implantation still remains a challenge in the field of traumatology. Whilst hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings are known to enhance the fixation of implants;their removal at a later time-point may be problematic. An HA coating has been developed to demonstrate that both implant fixation and safe removal are feasible in the same design. Accordingly the aim of this study was to compare the In-Vivo performance of thin biomimetic HA coated titanium screws to uncoated counterparts used as control after bilateral implantation in the femoral condyle of 36 New Zealand White Rabbits. The screws were analysed macroscopically, by histology, micro-CT and biomechanically at both two and six weeks post-implantation. The HA coated screws demonstrated excellent biocompatibility. At two weeks the HA coated screws demonstrated a significant increase in removal torque values as well as a strong trend towards higher pull-out forces. In addition histology confirmed a higher degree of osseointegration and direct bone to implant contact. At six weeks no difference in pull-out force and removal torque could be detected. SEM images confirmed the absence of any residual HA coating indicating a fast coating degradation In-Vivo. The low level of removal torque after full osseointegration at 6 weeks supports the feasibility of safe and easy removal of the implant. The HA coating under study appears to offer a unique characteristic of enhanced fixation with a minimal increase in removal torque after full osseointegration. This may be of value in clinical applications where it is necessary to assure both screw fixation and later removal.

Over-fertilization has caused significant phosphorus(P)accumulation in Chinese greenhouse vegetable production(GVP)*** study,for the first time,quantified profile P accumulation directly from soil P measurements,as well as subsoil P immobilization,in three alkaline coarse-textured GVP soil profiles with 5(S5),15(S15),and 30(S30)years of cultivation in Tongshan,Southeast *** each profile,soil samples were collected at depths of 0-10(topsoil),10-20,20-40,40-60,60-80,and 80-100 *** accumulation was estimated from the difference in P contents between topsoil and parent material(60-100 cm subsoil).Phosphorus mobility was assessed from measurements of water-soluble P concentration(P_(Sol)).Finally,P sorption isotherms were produced using a batch sorption experiment and fitted using a modified Langmuir *** total P contents of 1980(S5),3190(S15),and 2330(S30)mg kg^(-1) were measured in the topsoils versus lower total P content of approximately 600 mg kg^(-1) in the 80-100 cm ***,topsoil PSol values were very high,varying from 6.4 to 17.0 mg L^(-1).The estimated annual P accumulations in the topsoils were 397(S5),212(S15),and 78(S30)kg ha^(-1) year^(-1).Sorption isotherms demonstrated the dominance of P desorption in highly P-saturated topsoils,whereas the amount of adsorbed P increased in the 80-100 cm subsoils with slightly larger P adsorption *** total P adsorption capacity of the 80-100 cm subsoils at a solution P concentration of0.5 mg L^(-1) was 15.7(S5),8.7(S15),and 6.5(S30)kg ha^(-1),demonstrating that subsoils were unable to secure P concentrations in leaching water below 0.5 mg L^(-1) because of their insufficient P-binding capacity.

Impact of Biomechanical Forces on Antibiotics Release Kinetics from Hydroxyapatite Coated Surgical Fixation Pins

This work investigates the impact of biomechanical wear and abrasion on the antibiotic release profiles of hydroxyapatite (HA) coated fixation pins during their insertion into synthetic bone. Stainless steel fixation pins are coated with crystalline TiO2 by cathodic arc evaporation forming the bioactive layer for biomimetic deposition of Tobramycin containing HA. Tobramycin is either introduced by co-precipitation during HA formation or by adsorption-loading after HA deposition. The samples containing antibiotics are inserted into bone mimicking polyethylene foam after which the drug release is monitored using high performance liquid chromatography. This analysis shows that HA coating wear and delamination significantly decrease the amount of drug released during initial burst, but only marginally influence the sustained release period. Spalled coating fragments are found to remain within the synthetic bone material structure. The presence of HA within this structure supports the assumption that the local release of Tobramycin is not only expected to eliminate bacteria growth directly at the pin interface but as well at some distance from the implant. Furthermore, no negative effect of gamma sterilization could be observed on the drug release profile. Overall, the observed results demonstrate the feasibility of a multifunctional implant coating that is simultaneously able to locally deliver clinically relevant doses of antibiotics and an HA coating capable of promoting osteoconduction. This is a potentially promising step toward orthopaedic devices that combine good fixation with the ability to treat and prevent post-surgical infections.

Replication of Prostate Cancer Risk Variants in a Danish Case-Control Association Study

Background: Prostate cancer is one of the main causes for cancer morbidity and mortality in Western countries. Recently, several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with prostate cancer have been identified in genome-wide association studies and multiple variant models have been developed to predict prostate cancer risk. The association between genetic markers and clinico-pathological tumor variables has, however, been inconsistent. Methods and Materials: A total of 32 previously identified prostate cancer-associated risk SNPs were genotyped in 648 prostate cancer cases and 526 age-matched controls. Family history was obtained by questionnaire. Age at diagnosis, clinical tumor variables including pre- and postoperative PSA, Gleason score, and T stage were obtained from prospectively collected clinical data (Aarhus Prostate Cancer Study). The SNPs were genotyped using Sequenom and Taqman assays and associations between SNPs, prostate cancer risk, and clinico-pathological variables were assessed. Results: Seventeen SNPs were successfully replicated in our case-control study and the association estimates were consistent with previous reports. Four markers were excluded from further analysis due to linkage disequilibrium. The cumulative effect of having the disease-associated genotype at five SNPs (rs4430796, rs6983267, rs1859962, rs1447295 and rs16901979) increased the prostate cancer risk with odds ratio 6.02 (95% CI: 2.21 - 16.38;P = 1.0 × 10–4) in patients with any combination of ≥4 markers compared with patients without any of the five SNPs (P for trend = 1.0 × 10–4). Six markers were significantly associated with clinico-pathological variables: SNP rs2735839 (GG) at locus 19q13, which is in the KLK3 gene encoding PSA, was associated with high preoperative PSA (P = 0.04), low Gleason score (P = 0.01) and low T stage (P = 0.02). Factors Affecting the Efficiency of Fibers in Concrete on Crack Reduction

The object of this research effort was, upon request for evidence from a building contractor, to compare the influence of various amounts and types of fibers on crack widths, using a steel ring mold. Comparisons were made between synthetic fibers (polyolefin) of 48 mm length, hooked-end steel fibers of diameters 0.6 mm and 1.05 mm, both of 50 mm length. 10-liter samples were extracted from concrete ready-mix truck batches at delivery sites, whereupon fibers were mixed into the samples, layer by layer, by applying a drill-mounted mortar mixing device. For each amount of fiber content, 4 rings were cast, and of the plain concrete control samples, 5 rings were cast. After removing the outer steel casting, strain gages were installed on the exposed outer concrete surface. Strain values were continuously logged, and crack developments and crack widths were measured daily. Sufficient data with statistically high significance were obtained to indicate that: A synthetic fiber content of 3 kg/m3 did not decrease crack-widths as compared to the non-fiber concrete samples. Synthetic fiber contents of 5 kg/m3 and higher, did reduce crack widths on par with hooked-end steel fibers in the amounts of 25 kg/m3 and above. Hooked-end steel fibers of aspect ratio 80 are more efficient with regards to crack width reduction, yielding 33% narrower cracks, than hooked-end steel fibers, at equal weight-contents, with aspect ratio 45.

Wafer-level mass production of photonic integrated circuits(PIC)has become a technological mainstay in the field of optics and photonics,enabling many novel and disrupting a wide range of existing ***,scalable photonic packaging and system assembly still represents a major challenge that often hinders commercial adoption of PIC-based ***,chip-to-chip and fiber-to-chip connections often rely on so-called active alignment techniques,where the coupling efficiency is continuously measured and optimized during the assembly *** unavoidably leads to technically complex assembly processes and high cost,thereby eliminating most of the inherent scalability advantages of PIC-based *** this paper,we demonstrate that 3D-printed facet-attached microlenses(FaML)can overcome this problem by opening an attractive path towards highly scalable photonic system assembly,relying entirely on passive assembly techniques based on industry-standard machine vision and/or simple mechanical *** can be printed with high precision to the facets of optical components using multi-photon lithography,thereby offering the possibility to shape the emitted beams by freely designed refractive or reflective ***,the emitted beams can be collimated to a comparatively large diameter that is independent of the device-specific mode fields,thereby relaxing both axial and lateral alignment ***,the FaML concept allows to insert discrete optical elements such as optical isolators into the free-space beam paths between PIC *** show the viability and the versatility of the scheme in a series of selected experiments of high technical relevance,comprising pluggable fiber-chip interfaces,the combination of PIC with discrete micro-optical elements such as polarization beam splitters,as well as coupling with ultra-low back-reflection based on non-planar beam paths that only comprise tilted optical *** on our re

The chiral magnetic effect(CME)is a novel transport phenomenon,arising from the interplay between quantum anomalies and strong magnetic fields in chiral *** high-energy nuclear collisions,the CME may survive the expansion of the quark-gluon plasma fireball and be detected in *** the past two decades,experimental searches for the CME have attracted extensive interest at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider(RHIC)and the Large Hadron Collider(LHC).The main goal of this study is to investigate three pertinent experimental approaches:the$\gamma$correlator,the R correlator,and the signed balance *** exploit simple Monte Carlo simulations and a realistic event generator(EBE-AVFD)to verify the equivalence of the core components among these methods and to ascertain their sensitivities to the CME signal and the background contributions for the isobar collisions at the RHIC.

In 2018,the STAR collaboration collected data from^(96)_(44)Ru+^(96)_(44)Ru and^(96)_(40)Zr+^(96)_(40)Zr at√^(S)NN=200 Ge V to search for the presence of the chiral magnetic effect in collisions of *** isobar collision species alternated frequently between 9644 Ru+^(96)_(44)Ru and^(96)_(40)Zr+^(96)_(40)*** order to conduct blind analyses of studies related to the chiral magnetic effect in these isobar data,STAR developed a three-step blind analysis *** are initially provided a"reference sample"of data,comprised of a mix of events from the two species,the order of which respects time-dependent changes in run *** tuning analysis codes and performing time-dependent quality assurance on the reference sample,analysts are provided a species-blind sample suitable for calculating efficiencies and corrections for individual≈30-min data-taking *** this sample,species-specific information is disguised,but individual output files contain data from a single isobar *** run-by-run corrections and code alteration subsequent to these corrections are allowed at this *** these modifications,the"frozen"code is passed over the fully un-blind data,completing the blind *** a check of the feasibility of the blind analysis procedure,analysts completed a"mock data challenge,"analyzing data from Au+Au collisions at√^(S)NN=27 Ge V,collected in *** Au+Au data were prepared in the same manner intended for the isobar blind *** details of the blind analysis procedure and results from the mock data challenge are presented.
