The pursuit of safer and high-performance lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)has triggered extensive research activities on solid-state batteries,while challenges related to the unstable electrode-electrolyte interface hinder their practical implementation.Polymer has been used extensively to improve the cathode-electrolyte interface in garnet-based all-solid-state LIBs(ASSLBs),while it introduces new concerns about thermal stability.In this study,we propose the incorporation of a multi-functional flame-retardant triphenyl phos-phate additive into poly(ethylene oxide),acting as a thin buffer layer between LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)Mn_(0.1)O_(2)(NCM811)cathode and garnet electro-lyte.Through electrochemical stability tests,cycling performance evaluations,interfacial thermal stability analysis and flammability tests,improved thermal stability(capacity retention of 98.5%after 100 cycles at 60℃,and 89.6%after 50 cycles at 80℃)and safety characteristics(safe and stable cycling up to 100℃)are demonstrated.Based on various materials characterizations,the mechanism for the improved thermal stability of the interface is proposed.The results highlight the potential of multi-functional flame-retardant additives to address the challenges associated with the electrode-electrolyte interface in ASSLBs at high temperature.Efficient thermal modification in ASSLBs operating at elevated temperatures is also essential for enabling large-scale energy storage with safety being the primary concern.

In this study,the interaction between primary amine and diketones was investigated.Three diketones with a general structure of—(CH2C(O)CH2C(O))-X-R(X is C,O or N and R is H and/or alkyl groups)were selected to react with primary amine in aqueous solutions.The reaction was in-situ monitored by Raman technique and the reaction products were identified by FTIR,NMR and LC-MS.It is found that the reaction products strongly depend on the structures of diketones.When X is nitrogen,the expected Schiff base or its analog can be obtained.However,Schiff base or its analog is not detected if X is C or O,instead,ion pairs or hydrolysis products are formed accordingly,suggesting critical impacts of acidity of CH2 inβ-diketone on the product formation.This study also shows that in-situ Raman is a powerful technique for reaction monitoring and structure characterization,which is useful for mechanism understanding.

In 2012,USA Food and Drug Administration（FDA） approved 39 new drugs,however,there are only two botanical drugs（one topical and one oral）approved by FDA since the publication of the FDA＇s industry guidelines for the botanical drug product in June 2004.The approval shows the Western guideline can be used for herbal medicines,authors investigate current regulation on herbal medicine clinical research,identify challenges conducting clinical trials,and seek to produce some guidance for potential investigators and sponsors considering a clinical trial in this area.Key words were formulated for searching on Medline and FDA website to locate relevant regulations for clinical research in herbal medicines to understand current environment for herbal medicine usage and examine the barriers affecting herbal medicine in clinical trials.Authors critically explore case study of the 1st FDA approved botanical drugs,Veregen（sinecatechins）,green tea leaves extract,a topical cream for perianal and genital condyloma.In consideration of current regulation environment in USA,based on the findings and analysis through the literature review and Veregen case study,authors produce and propose a Checklist for New Drug Application of Herbal Medicines for potential investigators and sponsors considerina in a herbal medicine clinical trial.

Acute lung injury(ALI)and acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)are common life-threatening lung diseases associated with acute and severe inflammation.Both have high mortality rates,and despite decades of research on clinical ALI/ARDS,there are no effective therapeutic strategies.Disruption of alveolar-capillary barrier integrity or activation of inflammatory responses leads to lung inflammation and injury.Recently,studies on the role of extracellular vesicles(EVs)in regulating normal and pathophysiologic cell activities,including inflammation and injury responses,have attracted attention.Injured and dysfunctional cells often secrete EVs into serum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid with altered cargoes,which can be used to diagnose and predict the development of ALI/ARDS.EVs secreted by mesenchymal stem cells can also attenuate inflammatory reactions associated with cell dysfunction and injury to preserve or restore cell function,and thereby promote cell proliferation and tissue regeneration.This review focuses on the roles of EVs in the pathogenesis of pulmonary inflammation,particularly ALI/ARDS.

Seagrass Meadows under the Changing Climate:A Review of the Impacts of Climate Stressors

Seagrass meadows provide important ecological functions,particularly by serving as carbon sinks and breeding grounds for marine species.Climate change has threatened seagrass communities,causing their replacement,loss and increased vulnerability.This review examined scholarly articles published between 2010-2021 to comprehensively present the impacts of climate change on seagrass meadows.It shows that ocean warming negatively affects seagrass communities by favouring communities of lower structuring capacities,thus reducing the effectiveness of their ecological functions.Ocean warming also promotes the propagation and spread of invasive species,and changes the trophic structures leading to further loss of seagrasses of value.Higher seawater temperature is associated with shoot mortality and retarded growth of certain seagrasses.Sea level rise causes more wave energy to be received by coastal seagrass communities,thus,creating more damage to the communities.Deepening sea limits light penetration and alters distribution of seagrass meadows.Carbon dioxide enrichment of seawater increases photosynthetic rate of seagrasses but ocean warming and acidification counteract this beneficial effect.Carbon dioxide enrichment affects different seagrass species and different parts of a seagrass species differently,and,where beneficial to seagrass communities,could enhance their ecological services.Temperature extremes could kill seagrasses while marine heatwaves and flooding could act synergistically to increase carbon demand of certain seagrasses and unfavourably change their biomass.These impacts are often aggravated by anthropogenic activities.This review calls for more studies and conservation efforts to understand the impacts of climate change on seagrass communities and future-proof them against the changing climate.

Macrophages are typically identified as classically activated(M1) macrophages and alternatively activated(M2) macrophages,which respectively exhibit pro-and anti-inflammatory phenotypes,and the balance between these two subtypes plays a critical role in the regulation of tissue inflammation,injury,and repair processes.Recent studies indicate that tissue cells and macrophages interact via the release of small extracellular vesicles(EVs) in processes where EVs released by stressed tissue cells can promote the activation and polarization of adjacent macrophages which can in turn release EVs and factors that can promote cell stress and tissue inflammation and injury and vice versa.This review discusses the roles of such EVs in resulating such interactions to influence tissue inflammation and injury in a number of acute and chronic inflammatory disease conditions,and the potential applications,advantage and concerns for using EV-based therapeutic approaches to treat such conditions,including their potential role of drug carriers for the treatment of infectious diseases.

Extracellular vesicles(EVs)are small membranous particles that can mediate cell-to-cell communication and which are divided into at least three categories according to their subcellular origin and size:exosomes,microvesicles,and apoptotic bodies.Exosomes are the smallest(30–150 nm)of these EVs,and play an important role in EV-mediated cell-to-cell interactions,by transferring proteins,nucleic acids and,lipids from their parental cells to adjacent or distant cells to alter their phenotypes.Most exosome studies in the past two decades have focused on their nucleic acid composition and their transfer ofmRNAs and microRNAs to neighboring cells.However,exosomes also carry specific membrane proteins that can identify the physiological and pathological states of their parental cells or indicate their preferential target cells or tissues.Exosome membrane protein expression can also be directly employed or modified to allow exosomes to serve as drug delivery systems and therapeutic platforms,including in targeted therapy approaches.This review will briefly summarize information on exosome membrane proteins components and their role in exosome–cell interactions,including proteins associated with specific cell-interactions and diseases,and the potential for using exosome membrane proteins in therapeutic targeting approaches.

Triazolopyridines are an important kind of fused-ring compounds.A HOCl-promoted triazolopyridine formation strategy is reported here for the first time in which hypochlorous acid(HOCl)mildly and efficiently promotes the formation of 1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]pyridines NT1-NT6 from various 2-pyridylhydrazones N1-N6.N6,a rhodol-pyridylhydrazone hybrid,was developed into a fluorescent probe for the selective detection of HOCl,and successfully applied to probe endogenous HOCl in living cells and zebrafish in situ and in real time.The present intramolecular cyclization reaction is selective and atom-economical,thereby not only providing an important approach for the convenient synthesis of triazolopyridines,but also offering a general strategy for sensitive,selective and biocompatible detection of endogenous HOCl in complex biosystems.
