Directional Filter, Local Frequency Estimate and Algebraic Inversion of Differential Equation of Psoas Major Magnetic Resonance Elastography

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) can visualize the shear wave propagation of in vivo tissues, which can be mapped into viscoelastic properties. No study has measured the biomechanical properties of the PM muscle in vivo using MRE. In this study, we evaluated stiffness values calculated by local frequency estimate (LFE) and algebraic inversion of differential equation (AIDE) in PM-MRE. The PM muscles of 17 healthy male volunteers were scanned in supine position by MRE. The Laplacian-based estimate (LBE) phase wrapped image data were filtered by gaussian-bandpass filter (GBF), and by both directional and GBF. LFE (MREWave) and AIDE wave inversion methods were used to calculate the respective elastograms. The wave interferences were removed by directional filtering, and smooth wave fields were obtained. The stiffness values calculated by LFE of non-DF images were 1.39 ± 0.25 kPa and 1.33 ± 0.22 kPa for right and left PM respectively, whereas for DF images, they were 1.26 ± 0.20 kPa for right PM and 1.18 ± 0.28 kPa for left PM. The stiffness values calculated by AIDE of non-DF images were 0.78 ± 0.10 kPa and 0.78 ± 0.13 kPa for right and left PM respectively, whereas for DF images, they were 0.73 ± 0.12 kPa for right PM and 0.74 ± 0.11 kPa for left PM. There was no statistically significant difference in mean values of stiffness with/without applying directional filter whereas there was a statistically significant difference in mean values of stiffness between LFE and AIDE. Both LFE and AIDE could be used for psoas major MR Elastography.

An Integrated Study of ULF Magnetic Field Variations in Association with the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, on the Basis of Statistical and Critical Analyses

The ultra-low frequency (ULF) magnetic field data at a station very close to the 2008 Sichuan earthquake (EQ) (on 12 May, 2008;M = 8.0) are extensively studied on the basis of combined statistical and natural time analyses. Two effects in ULF are treated: one is the well-known ULF radiation from the lithosphere, and the other is the non-conventional depression of ULF horizontal magnetic field. The simple statistical analysis has yielded: 1) no clear evidence of the presence of precursory ULF radiation, and 2) a significant effect of depression of ULF horizontal field a few days before the EQ (as a signature of ionospheric perturbations). The recently introduced natural time analysis has also been performed in order to study the critical features of the lithosphere and essentially new information has been brought about. The parameter “polarization”, as the ratio of vertical to horizontal components, showed critical features in the time period of 17 - 27 April, about one month to two weeks before the EQ as a signature of lithospheric radiation. Then, the natural time analysis has reconfirmed the presence of ionospheric perturbations a few days before the EQ, together with an additional time window found on 19 - 23 April, about one month before the EQ, exhibiting critical features in the ULF depression.

Cylindroma is a benign skin appendageal tumor arising from pluripotent stem cells in the follicle. Multiple cylindroma typically occurs as a component of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome or as the only skin lesion of familial cylindromatosis. We herein report an unusual case of multiple cylindroma involving the trunk without any other features of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome and no family history supporting the possibility of familial cylindromatosis. Immunohistochemical features of CYLD and NF-κB, which are involved in the pathogenesis of cylindroma, in the tumors are also presented.

Systemic gemcitabine combined with intra-arterial low-dose cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: Seven cases

The combination of intra-arterial low-dose cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is effective against advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Systemic gemcitabine chemotherapy seems effective in many cancers. We report the results of combination therapy with systemic gemcitabine, intra-arterial low-dose cisplatin and 5-FU (GEMFP). Seven patients with non-resectable advanced HCC were treated with GEMFP. One course of chemotherapy consisted of daily intra-arterial cisplatin (20 mg/body weight/hour on d 1, 10 mg/body weight per 0.5 h on d 2-5 and 8-12), followed by 5-FU (250 mg/body weight per 5 h on d 1-5 and 8-12) via an injection port. Gemcitabine at 1000 mg/m2 was administered intravenously at 0.5 h on d 1 and 8. The objective response was 57%. The response to GEMFP was as follows: complete response (no patients), partial response (four patients), stable disease (three patients), and progressive disease (no patients). The median survival period was 8 mo (range, 5-55). With regard to the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria (NCI-CTC) grade 3 or 4 adverse reactions, seven (100%), seven, six (86%) and one (14%) patients developed leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and anemia, respectively. GEMFP may potentially be effective for non- resectable advanced HCC, but it has severe hematologic toxicity.

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging features of lipid-rich neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas

AIM:To clarify the computed tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) characteristics of lipid-rich pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(Pan NETs).METHODS:Enhanced CT and MRI performed before pancreatectomy in 29 patients with 34 histologicallyconfirmed Pan NETs was retrospectively reviewed. Tumor attenuation on CT and signal intensities on conventional(T1- and T2-weighted) and chemical shift MRI were qualitatively analyzed and compared alongside adipose differentiation-related protein(ADRP) immunostaining(ADRP-positive:lipid-rich; ADRP-negative:non-lipid-rich) results using Fisher's exact test or the Mann-Whitney U test. Signal intensity index on chemical shift MRI was quantitatively ***:There were 15 lipid-rich Pan NETs(44.1%) in 12 patients(41.4%). Tumor attenuation during the early,portal venous,and delayed phases of enhanced CT(P = 0.888,0.443,and 0.359,respectively) and signal intensities on conventional MRI(P = 0.698 and 0.798,respectively) were not significantly differentbetween lipid-rich and non-lipid-rich Pan NETs. Four of the 15 lipid-rich Pan NETs exhibited high signal intensity on subtraction chemical shift MRI,and the association of high signal intensity on subtraction imaging with lipid-rich Pan NETs was significant(4 of 15 lipid-rich Pan NETs,26.73%,vs 0 of 19 non-lipid-rich Pan NETs,0%,P = 0.029). Lipid-rich Pan NETs showed a significantly higher signal intensity index than non-lipidrich Pan NETs(0.6% ± 14.1% vs-10.4% ± 14.4%,P = 0.004). Eight of 15 lipid-rich Pan NETs,vs 0 of 19 nonlipid-rich Pan NETs,had positive signal intensity index values in concordance with lipid contents.C O N C L U S I O N :C T c o n t ra s t e n h a n c e m e n t a n d conventional MR signal intensities are similar in lipidrich and non-lipid-rich Pan NETs. Chemical shift MRI can demonstrate cytoplasmic lipids in Pan NETs.

Verifying Stacks and Queues Using Symbolic Simulation Techniques

This paper presents a formal verification method based on logic simulation. In our method, using symbolic values even circuits which include data paths can be verified without abstraction of data paths. Our verifier extracts a transition relation from the state graph (given as a specification) which is expressed using symbolic values, and verifies based on simulation using those symbolic values if the circuit behaves correctly with respect to each transition of the specification. If the verifier terminates with "correct", then we can guarantee that for any applicable input vector sequences, the circuit and the specification behaves identically. We have implemented the proposed method on a Unix workstation and verified some FIFO and LIFO circuits by using it.

Interleukin-17 levels in Helicobacter pylori-infected gastric mucosa and pathologic sequelae of colonization

AIM： To determine the role of interleukin （IL）-17 in gastric ulcerogenesis. METHODS： Thirty-six gastric ulcer （GU） patients and 29 non-ulcer （NU） patients were enrolled in this study. Mucosal biopsy samples were obtained from the gastric antrum and GU site during endoscopy. Samples were used in in situ stimulation for 48 h in the presence of 10 ug/mL phytohemagglutinin-P （PHA）, histological examination, and Helicobacter pylori（Hpylon） culture. IL-17 and IL-8 protein levels in culture supematants were assayed by ELISA. IL- 17 mRNA expression was analyzed by reverse transcriptasepolymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR）. Hpylori cagA and vacA status was assessed by reverse hybridization using a line probe assay （UPA）. IL-8 levels in culture supematants were assayed after AGS cells were co-cultured with Hpylori strain 26 695 or recombinant human （rh） IL-17. RESULTS： All 36 GU patients and 15 of 29 NU patients were found to be Hpy/or/-positive, while 14 NU patients were Hpylori-nogative. All 51 H pylori strains from both GU and NU patients were cagA- and vacAsl/ml-positive. Antral mucosal tissues from H pylori-positive patients contained significantly （H pylori-positive NU patients： median 467 pg/mg/protein, range 53-2 499; Hpylori negative NU patients： median 104 pg/mg/protein, range 16-312, P〈0.0005） higher levels of IL-17 than those from uninfected patients. IL-17 levels at the ulcer site were significantly （ulcer site： median 1 356 pcj/mg/protein, range 121-1 3730; antrum： median 761 pg/mg/protein, range 24-7 620, P〈0.005） higher than those at distant sites in the antrum. Biopsies from H pylori-positive GU and NU patients showed IL-17 mRNA expression in all samples whereas those from the antrum of the Hpylori-negativecontrols showed no detectable expression. A significant correlation was seen between IL-17 and IL-8 levels at each biopsy site （ulcer： r = 0.62,P〈0.0001; antrum： r = 0.61, P〈0.0001） in GU patients.
