Storage roots of cassava plants crops are one of the main providers of starch in many South American,African,and Asian *** varieties with high yields is crucial for growing and *** requires a better understanding of the dynamics of storage root formation,which is usually done by repeated manual evaluation of root types,diameters,and their distribution in excavated *** introduce a newly developed method that is capable to analyze the distribution of root diameters automatically,even if root systems display strong variations in root widths and clustering in high *** application study was conducted with cassava roots imaged in a video acquisition *** root diameter distribution was quantified automatically using an iterative ridge detection approach,which can cope with a wide span of root diameters and *** approach was validated with virtual root models of known geometries and then tested with a time-series of excavated root *** on the retrieved diameter classes,we show plausibly that the dynamics of root type formation can be monitored qualitatively and *** conclude that this new method reliably determines important phenotypic traits from storage root crop *** method is fast and robustly analyses complex root systems and thereby applicable in high-throughput phenotyping and future breeding.

Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)is used to image root systems grown in opaque ***,reconstruction of root system architecture(RSA)from 3-dimensional(3D)MRI images is *** resolution and poor contrast-to-noise ratios(CNRs)hinder automated ***,manual reconstruction is still widely ***,we evaluate a novel 2-step work flow for automated RSA *** the first step,a 3D U-Net segments MRI images into root and soil in *** the second step,an automated tracing algorithm reconstructs the root systems from the segmented *** evaluated the merits of both steps for an MRI dataset of 8 lupine root systems,by comparing the automated reconstructions to manual reconstructions of unaltered and segmented MRI images derived with a novel virtual reality *** found that the U-Net segmentation offers profound benefits in manual reconstruction:reconstruction speed was doubled(+97%)for images with low CNR and increased by 27%for images with high *** root lengths were increased by 20%and 3%,***,we propose to use U-Net segmentation as a principal image preprocessing step in manual work *** root length derived by the tracing algorithm was lower than in both manual reconstruction methods,but segmentation allowed automated processing of otherwise not readily usable MRI ***,model-based functional root traits revealed similar hydraulic behavior of automated and manual *** studies will aim to establish a hybrid work flow that utilizes automated reconstructions as scaffolds that can be manually corrected.

We study the time-dependent heat equation on its space-time domain that is discretised by a k-spacetree.k-spacetrees are a generalisation of the octree concept and are a discretisation paradigm yielding a multiscale representation of dynamically adaptive Cartesian grids with low memory *** paper presents a full approximation storage geometric multigrid implementation for this setting that combines the smoothing properties of multigrid for the equation’s elliptic operator with a multiscale solution propagation in *** the runtime and memory overhead for tackling the all-in-one space-time problem is bounded,the holistic approach promises to exhibit a better parallel scalability than classical time stepping,adaptive dynamic refinement in space and time fall naturally into place,as well as the treatment of periodic boundary conditions of steady cycle systems,on-time computational steering is eased as the algorithm delivers guesses for the solution’s long-term behaviour immediately,and,finally,backward problems arising from the adjoint equation benefit from the the solution being available for any point in space and time.

Dear Editors,Large-scale genome-wide association studies have identified an increasing number of single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)that are associated with colorectal cancer(CRC)risk[1].Polygenic risk scores(PRS)based on all established SNPs enable clinically relevant risk assessment that may help to develop novel risk-adapted prevention and screening strategies.

Green hydrogen is identified as one of the prime clean energy carriers due to its high energy density and a zero emission of CO_(2).A possible solution for the transport of H_(2)in a safe and low-cost way is in the form of liquid organic hydrogen carriers(LOHCs).As an alternative to loading LOHC with H_(2)via a two-step procedure involving preliminary electrolytic production of H_(2)and subsequent chemical hydrogenation of the LOHC,we explore here the possibility of electrochemical hydrogen storage(EHS)via conversion of proton of a proton donor into a hydrogen atom involved in covalent bonds with the LOHC(R)via a protoncoupled electron transfer(PCET)reaction:2nH^(+)+2ne^(-)+Rox■n H_(2)^(0)*** chose 9-fluorenone/fluorenol(Fnone/Fnol)conversion as such a model PCET *** electrochemical activation of Fnone via two sequential electron transfers was monitored with in-situ and operando spectroscopies in absence and in presence of different alcohols as proton donors of different reactivity,which enabled us to both quantify and get the mechanistic insight on *** possibility of hydrogen extraction from the loaded carrier molecule was illustrated by chemical activation.

Background:The study aimed to investigate the 24-month safety and efficacy of implantation of two secondgeneration iStent inject trabecular micro-bypass stents with concomitant cataract ***:This consecutive case series included 164 eyes of 109 patients implanted with the iStent inject®device with concomitant cataract *** series was comprised of eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma(n=84),pseudoexfoliation glaucoma(n=42),normal-tension glaucoma(n=18),and ocular hypertension(n=20).All 164 eyes reached 9–14 months of follow-up(“12-month consistent cohort”),with a subset of 88 eyes reaching 21–26 months of follow-up(“24-month consistent cohort”).Performance outcome measures included intraocular pressure(IOP)and number of glaucoma *** outcomes included intra-or postoperative complications,the need for secondary procedures and corrected distance visual *** of change in continuous(e.g.,IOP)and categorical(e.g.,proportions of eyes on zero medications)measures between baseline and postoperative times were made with the paired t-test and McNemar’s chi-squared test,***:At 12 months postoperatively,IOP was reduced by 25.5%(from 20.0±5.5 mmHg to 14.9±2.0 mmHg;p<0.001);at 24 months postoperatively,IOP was reduced by 26.6%(from 20.3±6.1 mmHg to 14.9±1.9 mmHg;p<0.001).At 12 months postoperatively,mean number of glaucoma medications was reduced by 85.0%(from 2.0±1.0 to 0.3±0.8 medications;p<0.001);at 24 months postoperatively,mean number of medications was reduced by 81.0%(from 2.1±1.1 to 0.4±0.8 medications;p<0.001).After 12 months,96.3%of eyes had an IOP≤18 mmHg and 58.5%of eyes had an IOP≤15 mmHg,with 81.1%of eyes free of any medication,compared to 1.8%of eyes medication-free in the 12-month cohort at *** 24 months,98.9%of eyes had an IOP≤18 mmHg and 53.4%of eyes had an IOP≤15 mmHg,with 72.7%free of medication compared to 1.1%of eyes medication-free in the 24-month cohort at ***,a high safe

Ecosystem services(ES)are the connection between nature and society,and are essential for the well-being of local communities that depend on *** Ethiopia,church forests and the surrounding agricultural matrix supply numerous ***,the ES delivered by both land use types have not yet been assessed *** we surveyed both church forests and their agricultural matrices,aiming to quantify,compare and unravel the drivers underlying tree-based ES supply,density and *** found that almost all church forests and half of the agricultural matrices provided high ES *** multifunctionality was higher in the agricultural matrices,suggesting that people deliberately conserve or plant multifunctional tree ***,the supply of all categories of ES was positively correlated with church forest age(p-value<0.001)in the agricultural matrix,while the extent of church forest was positively correlated with the density of all categories ecosystem services score in the church forests(p-value<0.001).Our results can be used to prioritize conservation efforts at sites that provide high levels of ES supply,ES density and ES multifunctionality,and to prioritize restoration efforts at sites with low levels thereof.

Large-scale Data Collection and Analysis via a Gamified Intelligent Crowdsourcing Platform

In this contribution, we present iHEARu-PLAY, an online, multi-player platform for crowdsourced database collection and labelling, including the voice analysis application (VoiLA), a free web-based speech classification tool designed to educate iHEARu-PLAY users about state-of-the-art speech analysis paradigms. Via this associated speech analysis web interface, in addition, VoiLA encourages users to take an active role in improving the service by providing labelled speech data. The platform allows users to record and upload voice samples directly from their browser, which are then analysed in a state-of-the-art classification pipeline. A set of pre-trained models targeting a range of speaker states and traits such as gender, valence, arousal, dominance, and 24 different discrete emotions is employed. The analysis results are visualised in a way that they are easily interpretable by laymen, giving users unique insights into how their voice sounds. We assess the effectiveness of iHEARu-PLAY and its integrated VoiLA feature via a series of user evaluations which indicate that it is fun and easy to use, and that it provides accurate and informative results.

Damage to plant communities imposed by insect herbivores generally decreases from low to high *** decrease is routinely attributed to declines in herbivore abundance and/or diversity,whereas latitudinal changes in per capita food consumption remain virtually ***,we tested the hypothesis that the lifetime food consumption by a herbivore individual decreases from low to high latitudes due to a temperature-driven decrease in metabolic *** 2016 to 2019,we explored latitudinal changes in multiple characteristics of linear(gallery)mines made by larvae of the pygmy moth,Stigmella lapponica,in leaves of downy birch,Betula *** mined leaves were larger than intact leaves at the southern end of our latitudinal gradient(at 60°N)but smaller than intact leaves at its northern end(at 69°N),suggesting that female oviposition preference changes with *** latitudinal changes were observed in larval size,mine length or area,and in per capita food consumption,but the larval feeding efficiency(quantified as the ratio between larval size and mine size)increased with ***,*** larvae consumed less foliar biomass at higher latitudes than at lower latitudes to reach the same *** on space-for-time substitution,we suggest that climate warming will increase metabolic expenses of insect herbivores with uncertain consequences for plant-herbivore interactions.
