Atomic Force Microscope with an Adjustable Probe Direction and Integrated Sensing and Actuation

This article presents the application and evaluation of a cantilever with integrated sensing and actuation as part of an atomic force microscope(AFM)with an adjustable probe direction,which is integrated into a nano measuring machine(NMM-1).The AFM,which is operated in closed-loop intermittent contact mode,is based on two rotational axes that enable the adjustment of the probe direction to cover a complete *** axes greatly enlarge the metrology frame of the measuring system by materials with a comparatively high coefficient of thermal expansion,which ultimately limits the achievable measurement uncertainty of the measuring ***,to reduce the thermal sensitivity of the system,the redesign of the rotational kinematics is ***,in this article,some preliminary investigations on the application of a self-sensing cantilever with an integrated micro heater for its stimulation will be *** previous investigations,a piezoelectric actuator has been applied to stimulate the ***,the removal of the piezoelectric actuator,which is enabled by the application of a cantilever with an integrated micro heater,promises an essential simplification of the sensor ***,in the future it might be possible to use materials with a low coefficient of thermal expansion,which are often difficult to machine and therefore only allow for rather simple ***,because of the creepage of piezoelectric actuators,their removal from the metrology frame might lead to improved metrological *** will be shown,there are no significant differences between the two modes of ***,the redesigned rotational system will be based on the cantilever with integrated sensing and actuation.

The coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)has greatly affected the overall health of the elderly population through direct biological(infection-related)and indirect psychosocial(quarantine-and isolation-related)*** the severe form of COVID-19 most frequently targets this population,the prevalence of long-term sequelae is expected to rise consequentially in people≥65 years *** prominent neuropsychiatric consequences of COVID-19 and the cognitive frailty seen in older adults can both have a negative impact on their mental *** explore the behavioral,neurological,and psychosocial consequences of COVID-19,we conducted separate studies on different populations of older adult people residing in Lombardy-the Italian epicenter of the first pandemic wave in spring 2020.

Leveraging the biocatalytic machinery of living organisms for fabricating functional bioelectronic interfaces,in vivo,defines a new class of micro-biohybrids enabling the seamless integration of technology with living biological ***,we have demonstrated the in vivo polymerization of conjugated oligomers forming conductors within the structures of ***,we expand this concept by reporting that Hydra,an invertebrate animal,polymerizes the conjugated oligomer ETE-S both within cells that expresses peroxidase activity and within the adhesive material that is secreted to promote underwater surface *** resulting conjugated polymer forms electronically conducting and electrochemically activeμm-sized domains,which are inter-connected resulting in percolative conduction pathways extending beyond 100μm,that are fully integrated within the Hydra tissue and the secreted ***,the introduction and in vivo polymerization of ETE-S can be used as a biochemical marker to follow the dynamics of Hydra budding(reproduction)and *** work paves the way for well-defined self-organized electronics in animal tissue to modulate biological functions and in vivo biofabrication of hybrid functional materials and devices.

Since the advent of femtosecond lasers,performance improvements have constantly impacted on existing applications and enabled novel ***,one performance feature bearing the potential of a quantum leap for high-field applications is still not available:the simultaneous emission of extremely high peak and average *** applications such as laser particle acceleration require exactly this performance regime and,therefore,challenge laser technology at *** the one hand,canonical bulk systems can provide pulse peak powers in the multi-terawatt to petawatt range,while on the other hand,advanced solid-state-laser concepts such as the thin disk,slab or fibre are well known for their high efficiency and their ability to emit high average powers in the kilowatt range with excellent beam *** this contribution,a compact laser system capable of simultaneously providing high peak and average powers with high wall-plug efficiency is proposed and *** concept is based on the temporal coherent combination(pulse stacking)of a pulse train emitted from a high-repetition-rate femtosecond laser system in a passive enhancement ***,the pulse energy is increased at the cost of the repetition rate while almost preserving the average *** concept relies on a fast switching element for dumping the enhanced pulse out of the *** switch constitutes the key challenge of our *** this challenge could,for the first time,allow the highly efficient dumping of joule-class pulses at megawatt average power levels and lead to unprecedented laser parameters.

Application of Synthetic Meteorological Time Series in BROOK90:A Case Study for the Tharandt Forest in Saxony,Germany

This study presents an extended version of a single site daily weather generator after Richardson. The model is driven by daily precipitation series derived by a first-order two-state Markov chain and considers the annual cycle of each meteorological variable. The evaluation of its performance was done by deploying its synthetic time series into the physical based hydrological model BROOK90. The weather generator was applied and tested for data from the Anchor Station at the Tharandt Forest, Germany. Additionally its results were compared to the output of another weather generator with spell-length approach for the precipitation series (LARS-WG). The comparison was distinguished into a meteoro-logical and a hydrological part in terms of extremes, monthly and annual sums and averages. Extreme events could be preserved adequately by both models. Nevertheless a general underestimation of rare events was observed. Natural correlations between vapour pressure and minimum temperature could be conserved as well as annual cycles of the hydro-logical and meteorological regime. But the simulated spectrums of extremes, especially, of precipitation and temperature, are more limited than the observed spectrums. While LARS-WG already finds application in practice, the results show that the data derived from the presented weather generator is as useful and reliable as those from the established model for the simulation of the water balance.
