We sought to examine the regulatory effect of Meteorin-β(Metrnβ)/Meteorin like(Metrnl)/IL-41 on lung inflammation in allergic asthma.We found that Metrnβwas elevated significantly in asthmatic patients and in mice with allergic asthma induced by house dust mite(HDM)extract.Upon exposure to HDM,Metrnβwas secreted predominantly by airway epithelial cells and inflammatory cells,including macrophages and eosinophils.The increased Metrnβeffectively blocked the development of airway hyperreactivity(AHR)and decreased inflammatory cell airway infiltration and type 2 cytokine production,which was associated with downregulated DC-mediated adaptive immune responses.Moreover,Metrnβimpaired the maturation and function of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells in vitro.Asthmatic mice adoptively transferred with dendritic cells isolated from Metrnβ-treated allergic mice displayed decreased AHR,airway inflammation,and lung injury.Metrnβalso displayed anti-inflammatory properties in immunodeficient SCID mice with allergic asthma and in in vitro 3D ALI airway models.Moreover,blockade of Metrnβby anti-Metrnβantibody treatment promoted the development of allergic asthma.These results revealed the unappreciated protective roles of Metrnβin alleviating DC-mediated Th2 inflammation in allergic asthma,providing the novel treatment strategy of therapeutic targeting of Metrnβin allergic asthma.

In August 2014,the local media in Hong Kong reports a case of illegal prescription of the topical corticosteroid(CS)triamcinolone acetonide to a child with eczema by a Chinese medicine(CM)practitioner.[1]The eminent CM practitioner is depicted as a"divine doctor for childbirth",and illegal prescription or sale of CS as a class I poison considered a criminal act.In November 2011,another eminent CM practitioner,also known as"holy hand for eczema"was charged for causing Cushing syndrome in a number of children with eczema who had unknowingly received CS whilst receiving acupuncture therapy.[2]In 2006,a complementary and alternative medicine(CAM)practitioner was charged for processing and prescribing CS.[3]The CAM practitioner,also known as"Father of Naturopathy",allegedly discouraged patients from using legally prescribed CS for treatment of common atopic diseases.

Predicting eczema severity beyond childhood

Background:We evaluated factors associated with eczema severity in adolescence.Methods:Nottingham Eczema Severity Score(NESS),family and personal history of atopy,skin prick test for common food and aeroallergens,highest serum IgE level and eosinophil count were evaluated.Patients with paired NESSs(childhood-NESS is NESS performed at10 years)were further analyzed.Results:Adolescence-NESS(n=383 patients)was associated with eczema onset in infancy,dust mite and food allergen sensitization,dietary avoidance,use of wet wrap,traditional Chinese medicine,immunomodulant(azathioprine or cyclosporine),high IgE level,eosinophil count,but not with family/personal history of atopy.Eighty-two patients had both childhood-NESS and adolescence-NESS(mean follow-up of 6.8 years)showing that adolescence-NESS was associated with childhood-NESS severity grades(P=0.034).Of these patients,48%remained in the same severity grades,whereas 39%improved,and 13%deteriorated from childhood to adolescence.Conclusions:It is not possible to assure parents that their child can outgrow eczema.In eczema prognosis research,long-term follow-up is warranted.

Background Asthma is a significant chronic health problem worldwide. Management aims at disease control by reducing functional impairment and exacerbations and improving quality of life (QoL). We report a multi-center study to survey asthma control and QoL in four cities in the Pearl River Delta. Methods The conjoint survey involved ten Hong Kong pediatric hospitals/units, two Shenzhen hospitals, two Macao hos-pitals, and two Guangzhou hospitals on asthma control (using Asthma Control Test) and QoL (Pediatric Allergic Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire, PADQLQ). Acceptability of a treatment is graded as very good/good/fair/poor. Results Good asthma control was only reported in 80% subjects in Hong Kong, but higher in sister cities (85–94%, P<0.001). Allergic rhinitis, 'incense burning', and 'smoker in family' were prevalent among the four cities. Logistic regres-sion showed better control of asthma was associated with better PADQLQ (B=?0.029, P < 0.001), better acceptability of bronchodilator (B=?1.488, P = 0.025), negatively with 'smoker in family' (B=?0.83, P = 0.015) and various PADQLQ domains. Conversely, worse PADQLQ was associated with allergic rhinitis severity (B=4.77, P <0.001), poor control of asthma (B=7.56, P <0.001), increased frequency of traditional Chinese medicine use (B=1.7, P < 0.05), increased fre-quency of bronchodilator usage (B=1.05, P < 0.05), 'smoker in family' (B=4.05, P < 0.05), and incense burning at home (B=3.9, P < 0.05). Conclusions There are some clinical and cultural differences among the four southern Chinese cities within the Guangdong province. This study identifies potentially modifiable environmental and treatment factors associated with poor asthma control and QoL for health-care interventions. Having a smoker in the family is independently associated with poor asthma control and QoL.

Active metal-based batteries are drawing increased attention because of their inherent high energy density and specific capacity.Some grand challenges,such as dendrite growth,electrode degradation,rapid performance fading,etc.,have limited their practical application.Bioinspiration,which involves taking cues from the structures and functions of the natural world,can lead to a wealth of conceptually fresh approaches to regulator the metal ion transportation to achieve a dendrite-free metal plating,thwart the side-reaction reactions,and retard the structural distortions,for a more reliable and secure operation of active metal-based batteries.In this review,we concentrate on the fabrication and application of bioinspired designs in active metal-based batteries with enhanced performance,along with discussion on the challenges and opportunities associated with this promising topic.We anticipate that this review can offer some insights into the development of functional materials by learning from nature and provide some approaches for the innovations of either the battery structures or the energy materials for metal-based batteries.

With the development and regulatory approval of immune checkpoint inhibitors and adoptive cell therapies,cancer immunotherapy has undergone a profound transformation over the past decades.Recently,therapeutic cancer vaccines have shown promise by eliciting de novo T cell responses targeting tumor antigens,including tumor-associated antigens and tumor-specific antigens.The objective was to amplify and diversify the intrinsic repertoire of tumor-specific T cells.However,the complete realization of these capabilities remains an ongoing pursuit.Therefore,we provide an overview of the current landscape of cancer vaccines in this review.The range of antigen selection,antigen delivery systems development the strategic nuances underlying effective antigen presentation have pioneered cancer vaccine design.Furthermore,this review addresses the current status of clinical trials and discusses their strategies,focusing on tumor-specific immunogenicity and anti-tumor efficacy assessment.However,current clinical attempts toward developing cancer vaccines have not yielded breakthrough clinical outcomes due to significant challenges,including tumor immune microenvironment suppression,optimal candidate identification,immune response evaluation,and vaccine manufacturing acceleration.Therefore,the field is poised to overcome hurdles and improve patient outcomes in the future by acknowledging these clinical complexities and persistently striving to surmount inherent constraints.

Development and validation of a nomogram to predict allograft survival after pediatric liver transplantation

Background Liver transplantation is the main treatment for cholestatic liver disease and some metabolic liver diseases in children.However,no accurate prediction model to determine the survival probability of grafts prior to surgery exists.This study aimed to develop an effective prognostic model for allograft survival after pediatric liver transplantation.Methods This retrospective cohort study included 2032 patients who underwent pediatric liver transplantation between January 1,2006,and January 1,2020.A nomogram was developed using Cox regression and validated based on bootstrap sampling.Predictive and discriminatory accuracies were determined using the concordance index and visualized using calibration curves;net benefits were calculated for model comparison.An online Shiny application was developed for easy access to the model.Results Multivariable analysis demonstrated that preoperative diagnosis,recipient age,body weight,graft type,preoperative total bilirubin,interleukin-1β,portal venous blood flow direction,spleen thickness,and the presence of heart disease and cholangitis were independent factors for survival,all of which were selected in the nomogram.Calibration of the nomogram indicated that the 1-,3-,and 5-year predicted survival rates agreed with the actual survival rate.The concordance indices for graft survival at 1,3,and 5 years were 0.776,0.757,and 0.753,respectively,which were significantly higher than those of the Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease and Child-Pugh scoring systems.The allograft dysfunction risk of a recipient could be easily predicted using the following URL:https://aspelt.***.io/ASPELT/l Conclusion The allograft survival after pediatric liver transplantation(ASPELT)score model can effectively predict the graft survival rate after liver transplantation in children,providing a simple and convenient evaluation method for clinicians and patients.

Metasurface-based imaging has attracted considerable attention owing to its compactness,multifunctionality,and subwavelength coding capability.With the integration of computational imaging techniques,researchers have actively explored the extended capabilities of metasurfaces,enabling a wide range of imaging methods.We present an overview of the recent progress in metasurface-based imaging techniques,focusing on the perspective of computational imaging.Specifically,we categorize and review existing metasurface-based imaging into three main groups,including(i)conventional metasurface design employing canonical methods,(ii)computation introduced independently in either the imaging process or postprocessing,and(iii)an end-to-end computation-optimized imaging system based upon metasurfaces.We highlight the advantages and challenges associated with each computational metasurface-based imaging technique and discuss the potential and future prospects of the computational boosted metaimager.

Two-dimensional bimetallic selenium-containing metal-organic frameworks and their calcinated derivatives as electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

The use of two-dimensional(2D)layered metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)as self-sacrificial templates has been proven to be a successful method to create high-efficiency Selenium(Se)-containing electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.Herein,two strategies are then utilized to introduce Se element into the Co–Fe MOF,one being the etching of as-prepared MOF by SeO_(2) solution,and the other,the replacing of SCN−with SeCN−as the construction unit.The electrochemical activity of the pristine 2D MOF and their calcinated derivatives for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)and oxygen evolution reaction(OER)is evaluated and further discussed.It is found that the effect of introducing Se on improving electrochemical catalytic activity is significant for the HER process.Specifically,the calcinated derivative in the replacing method exhibits an overpotential of 235 mV for HER and 270 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA/cm2.For comparing the two methods of introducing Se element into MOF,similar electrocatalytic activity can be achieved on the their calcinated derivatives.The high electrochemical performance of 2D CoFe-MOF derivatives may be resulted from the unique 2D hierarchical porous structure and strong synergistic effect between different components in the material.
