AIM:To investigate the efficacy of probiotics in irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) ***:Pub Med,Cochrane library,Scopus,Google Scholar,and *** databases were searched for literature published between September 2007 and December *** applied Mesh terms were "probiotics," "irritable bowel syndrome," and "irritable bowel syndrome treatment." The collected data contained24 clinical trials,of which 15 were eligible for meta-analysis and nine were reviewed *** studies were randomized placebo-controlled trials in patients with IBS that investigated the efficacy of probiotics in IBS *** Jadad score was used to assess the methodological quality of *** quality scale ranges from 0 to 5 points,with a score ≤ 2 indicating a low quality report,and a score of ≥3 indicating a high quality *** risk(RR),standardized effect size,and 95%CI were calculated using the Der Simonian-laird *** Cochran Q test was used to test heterogeneity with P lots were constructed and Egger's and BeggMazumdar tests were performed to assess publication ***:A total of 1793 patients were included in the *** RR of responders to therapies based on abdominal pain score in IBS patients for two included trials comparing probiotics to placebo was 1.96(95%CI:1.14-3.36;P = 0.01).RR of responders to therapies based on a global symptom score in IBS patients for two included trials comparing probiotics with placebo was 2.43(95%CI:1.13-5.21;P = 0.02).For adequate improvement of general symptoms in IBS patients,the RR of seven included trials(six studies) comparing probiotics with placebo was 2.14(95%CI:1.08-4.26;P = 0.03).Distension,bloating,and flatulence were evaluated using an IBS severity scoring system in three trials(two studies) to compare the effect of probiotic therapy in IBS patients with placebo,the standardized effect size of mean differences for probiotics therapy was-2.57(95%CI:-13.05--7.92)

Amino acids are naturally occurring compounds in many edible or medicinal plants,which possess a variety of nutraceutical effects in ***,a method of ultrasound-assisted extraction was optimized using Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology in maximizing the yield of free amino acids deriving from flowers of Apocynum venetum *** the optimal condition of ultrasound-assisted extraction,i.e.187.5 W of ultrasonic power,31.93 min of extraction time,and 0.47 mg/ml of solid-liquid ratio,the experimental yield of extractive was 287.17±0.205 mg/g,which was in close agreement with the value,as predicted by the established *** addition,a hydrophilic interaction ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with QqQ-MS/MS method was developed and validated for simultaneous quantification of 20 types of amino acids without derivatization contained in *** *** analytical method was validated by matrix effect,linearity,limit of detection,limit of quantification,precision,repeatability,stability,and *** analysis results showed that *** flower was rich in free amino acids of~3%of total dried weight,and which contained leucine(13.7 g/mg),isoleucine(7.9 g/mg),and lysine(2.2 g/mg)as the most abundant amino ***,*** flower could provide beneficial nutrient values for human health,*** weight maintenance or glucose homeostasis.

Equivocal Differential Effect of NDRG1 in human Ovarian Cancer Cells

Inactivation of tumor suppressor genes is a key factor in cancer regulation. N-myc downstream regulated gene 1 (NDRG1) is a tumor suppressor gene well known to be involved in carcinogenesis of numerous cancer types. The present study was designed to investigate the role of NDRG1 in human ovarian cancer, using SKOV-3 and SW626 (moderately and well differentiated cancer cells, respectively). Our results revealed that over-expressed NDRG1 significantly up-regulated the differentiation marker p21, in the ovarian cancer cell lines. This regulation led to decrease in cell viability and DNA synthesis rates in SW626 cells (83% and 89.5%, respectively). however, no effect on viability or on DNA synthesis was observed in SKOV-3 NDRG1-transfected cells. These findings prove that NDRG1 is indubitably functional in human ovarian cancer cells, as it up-regulated p21 expression. Nevertheless, this regulation showed differential effect on cell viability and DNA formation thus promoting the perception that downstream regulation of p21 could be inefficient in some cancer cells, a concept that needs to be further explored in order to understand its disability to play as regulator of cell cycle progression.

Paleoenvironmental Implications from Biomarker Investigations on the Pliocene lower Sajau lignite Seam in Kasai Area, Berau Basin, Northeast Kalimantan, Indonesia

Pliocene age lignites from lower Sajau seam, from borehole in Berau Basin, Northeast Kalimantan, Indonesia were investigated with respect to organic geochemistry by hPlC, GC and GC/MS. The analysis was conducted to drilling sequence of Kasai Coal Field, Berau Basin which has been applied to identify organic sources and maturity of organic matter. The result of normalized yields of the soluble organic matter (SOM) data indicates saturated and aromatic proportion of hydrocarbon are very low (under 10%), this was reflecting that lignite coal is still in immature stage. Moreover, biomarker hydrocarbon such as diterpenoids was not found from the sample that indicates absence of gymnosperm precursor in the paleo-peat. In contrast, there was great abundance of terpenoid biomarkers including lupane and oleanane showing domination of angiosperms indicate that angiosperm was dominated vegetation source. There also hopanoid biomarkers explaining acidic depositional environment in coal formation and microbes-affected conditions in peat formation process. Ratio of Tm/Ts shows paleomire where ratios value of Tm/Ts is in range of oxide condition.

OBJECTIVES:Proteins are the major component and play a key role in nutritious and therapeutic functions of edible bird’s nest(EBN);however,limited studies have been conducted on the protein due to difficulties in extraction,isolation as well as *** study aimed to provide comprehensive information for the quality evaluation of EBN peptides,which would be a valuable reference for further study on EBN ***:here,we developed a quality control method using high performance liquid chromatography(hPlC)peptide fingerprints deriving from EBN being digested with simulated gastric *** characteristic peptide peaks were collected and identified by lC-MS/***:The characteristic peptide peaks,corresponding to the protein fragments of acidic mammalian chitinase-like,lysyl oxidase,and Mucin-5AC-like,were identified and ***,the principal component analysis indicated that the fingerprints were able to discriminate colour of EBN(white/red)and production sites(cave/house)of White EBN on the same weight *** proposed by the model developed in this study,Muc-5AC-like and AMCaselike proteins were the markers with the highest discriminative ***:The overall findings suggest that hPlC peptide fingerprints were able to clearly demonstrate peptide profile differences between genuine and adulterated EBN samples;and classify EBN samples by its color and production *** addition,the protein identification results suggested that Muc-5AC-like protein was the major protein in EBN.
