Pediatric dog bite injuries in the USA: a systematic review

Correlation of in vivo tumor response and singlet oxygen luminescence detection in mTHPC-mediated photodynamic therapy

Excited-state singlet axygen(^(1)O_(2)),generated during photodynamic therapy(PDT),is believed to be the primary cytotoxic agent with a number of clinically approved *** relative concentration in cells or tissues can be measured directly through its near-infrared(NIR)luminescence emission,which has correlated well with in vitro cell and in triro normal skin treatment ***,its correlation with the response of tumor tiss1e in vito is examined,using the photosensitizer meso-tetralydroxyphenylchlorin(mTHPC)in an animal model comprising luciferase-and green fluorescent protein(GFP)-transduced gliosarcoma grown in a dorsal window *** change in the bioluminescence signal,imaged pre-treatment and at 2,5 and 9 d post treatment,was used as a quantitative measure of the tumor response,which was classified in individual tumors as"non","moderate"and"strong"in order to reduce the variance in the *** the bioluminescence-based response vs the^(1)O_(2)counts demonstrated clear correlation,indicating tha^(1)O_(2)luminescence provides a valid do-simetric technique for PDT in tumor tissue.

Resident accuracy in locating the common femoral vein in normal weight vs. obese patients

Objectives: Ultrasound guidance increases the success of internal jugular central venous catheter (CVC) placement. The common femoral vein (CFV) is considered an easier site and physicians frequently place CFV CVCs using anatomical landmark guidance. No research has demonstrated the effect of patient weight on placement of a femoral CVC. The authors hypothesized that resident physicians could determine by anatomical landmarks the insertion site of a femoral CVC in normal and overweight adults. Methods: Investigators consented adult patients in the Emergency Department to serve as study models. Patients were grouped by BMI: Normal (BMI (BMI > 25). PGYI-III Emergency Medicine residents who volunteered to participate were included. Residents inspected and palpated the inguinal regions on a patient and marked the patient’s skin directly over the CFV. A faculty member assessed success using a 10 MHz linear probe (Sonosite Micro Maxx) centered over the mark. The attempt was successful if the mark was directly over the CFV and unsuccessful if distal, lateral, or medial to the CFV. Results: Nineteen residents (6 PGYI, 7 PGY II, and 6 PGYIII) assessed 17 patients. There were 43 attempts on Normal patients and 57 attempts on Overweight patients. The success rate on Normal patients was 74% and on Overweight patients was 42% (p = 0.0021). Conclusion: Residents were more successful in correctly identifying the CFV by anatomical landmarks in Normal patients. Training year had no effect on success. Ultrasound guidance may increase the success rate of placing a femoral CVC in patients with BMI > 25.

100-Gb/s undersea transmission with high spectral efficiency using pre-filtered QPSK modulation format

We provide a review of our recent 100-Gb/s, high spectral efficiency （SE） experiment targeting transoceanic and regional undersea transmission distances. We demonstrated that simple pre-filtering at the transmitter together with a maximum a posteriori probability （MAP） detection algorithm can significantly improve SE. We transmitted 96×100-Gb/s pre-filtered polarization division multiplexed return-to-zero quadrature phase shift keyed （PDM-RZ-QPSK） channels with 300% SE over 10608 km using 52-km spans of 150-μm 2 fiber and simple single-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifiers （EDFAs）. We also achieved 400% SE over 4368 km using similar techniques.

AIM To compare(1) quality of life and(2) rate of recurrent small bowel obstructions(SBO) for patients treated with novel manual physiotherapy vs no treatment. METHODS One hundred and three subjects(age 19-89) with a history of recurrent adhesive SBO were treated with a manual physiotherapy called the Clear Passage Approach(CPA) which focused on decreasing adhesive crosslinking in abdominopelvic viscera. Pre-and post-therapy data measured recurring obstructions and quality of life, using a validated test sent 90 d after therapy. Results were compared to 136 untreated control subjects who underwent the same measurements for subjects who did not receive any therapy, which is the normal course for patients with recurring SBO. Comparison of the groups allowed us to assess changes when the physiotherapy was added as an adjunct treatment for patients with recurring *** Despite histories of more prior hospitalizations, obstructions, surgeries, and years impacted by bowel issues, the 103 CPA-treated subjects reported a significantly lower rate of repeat SBO than 136 untreated controls(total obstructions P = 0.0003; partial obstructions P = 0.0076). Subjects treated with the therapy demonstrated significant improvements in five of six total domains in the validated Small Bowel Obstruction Questionnaire(SBO-Q). Domains of diet, pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, quality of life(QOL) and pain severity when compared to post CPA treatment were significantly improved(P jects.
